Abstract

English is one of the essential factors to gain access to global information and knowledge of science and technology. The rapid expansion of technological education and knowledge in developing countries, such as Indonesia, calls for the need into foreign language proficiency, especially English to meet the demand of global market. Seeing the current challenges of global competition, many higher education institutions set the graduation requirements by assigning the students to follow TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) in order to measure and determine the capability or proficiency in English-speaking graduates. Considering TOEFL as one of the most ideal test in assessing English skill, this study aims to generate product in the form of E-TEFL (EEPIS Test of English as a Foreign Language) which is established as an evaluation tool to meet the academic needs in Electronic Engineering Polytechnic Institute of Surabaya (PENS). Research and development (R&D) is a method used in this study. The study was conducted through several stages namely (1) need analysis, (2) System design, (3) E-TEFLdevelopment, (4) expert validation (lecturers) and first revision, (5) try-out, (6) final revision. The use of technology in developing E-TEFL application is expected to give another alternative in learning TOEFL and E-TEFL can be used as an ideal assessment tool for proving students’ language proficiency as graduation requirement.

Abstract

Visual Games Novel (VGN) is effectively seen as a digital evolution books, with music, pictures, and occasionally even voice acting or movies. VGN mostly do not have a game play nor interaction outside of continuing the dialogue with a button press or make a decision even though the typical game drive the user do a lot. This activity applied in EFL reading class to enhance the students’ reading comprehension. Explicit instruction strategy is used to conduct this study, the aim of this qualitative study is to find out the students expressed and their perception toward VGN after being treated with an explicit strategy using VGN in one semester with 8 meetings. An -10 item with open-ended questionnaire which was followed by an in-depth interview. The data were obtained from examining the students’ perceptions towards the use of VGN in reading class. A total of 54 sophomore majoring in Mechatronics and Industrial Electronics Departmentsof an Indonesia state polytechnic (PoliteknikElektronikaNegeri Surabaya). The result showed that mostly students have positive attitudes respond towards VGN and they developed their integrative and instrumental motivation during the treatment. The pedagogy is that combining betweennatural and explicit vocabulary instruction is more effective in promoting reading comprehension to support the VGN. The language practitioners can rely on teaching reading, especially in ESP context, to help improve students’ comprehension in reading.

Abstract

This current study is focusing on the impact of English movies with English subtitles and Bahasa Indonesia subtitles on content comprehension of English movies through the students’ listening comprehension. Fifty-six (56) students of English subject at the Politeknik Elektronika Negeri Surabaya were selected randomly. Using the quasi-experimental study, a movie entitled Transcendence was selected based on the ESP content and language level difficulty.  With two intact groups, they were group A and group B presented the same movie, class A watched it with English subtitle and class B with Bahasa Indonesia subtitle. After watching the movie, the participants answered the relevant multiple-choice vocabulary by listening session questions and content comprehension questions, they answer the questions on the paper. The data gathered were subjected to the statistical procedure of paired sample t-test. The results showed that English subtitle has an impact better than Bahasa Indonesia subtitle. However, this statistical data failed to show that they get greater development on their vocabulary comprehension. Those findings showed that the students’ listening comprehension does not have any impact on their vocabulary comprehension.

Abstract

Humanoid robot is a robot whose overall appearance is formed based on the human body and can interact with equipment and the environment created by humans. The robot's balance becomes fundamental in carrying out various tasks in designing humanoid robots. To deal with this, the adjustment of the humanoid robot movement is crucial in this work, research related to the virtual visualization of robots. Virtual robot visualization can be done by creating a simulator that contains dynamic parameters, including the physics of the robot. With the simulation containing dynamic parameters, the humanoid robot movement can be tried many times until the robot movement is robust. Applying the URDF (Unified Robot Description Format) model to the Gazebo simulator, which is supported by the ROS (Robot Operating System) framework, can make a simulator with dynamic parameters mimicking a real environment. In order to make a robust robot motion, feedback is needed in position and torque to find out the difference between simulation and reality. On the other hand, simulations can be done without cost or risk and, most importantly, mimic the actual robot soccer environment.

This study analyzed how the characters of the play think and see the marriage institution. The study is qualitative research with a sociological approach. The approach was used to understand the work by comparing the content of the work with the society where the play was written using social sciences.  Data were collected from the main source and the other sources before they were analyzed using the descriptive-analytic techniques A Marriage Proposal was the main source of this study, and the other sources were derived from books, journals, and the internet.  Keywords: proposal, marriage, social stability, true love, affection
