Abstract

Of the many different dialects of English such as British English (hereafter BrE), American English (hereafter AmE), Australian English (AsE), or Canadian English (CnE) or even Singaporean English (hereafter Singlish), etc, the most common widely use across the globe are BrE and AmE. The two dialects of English, as a matter of fact, are dominantly used in any kinds of fields to mention a few such as politics, economics, diplomatic relationship, medical, information communication and technology (ICT), and education as well. The debate about the use of BrE and AmE often centers on education especially in the process of learning and acquiring the English itself because the two dialects of English provide some different and distinctive features. Because of their differences and distinctive features, the learners often find difficulties and often make them confused which one to use. This paper is attempting to review the unique features of BrE and AmE focusing on the spellings.

Abstract

It is a fact that there are some amazing differences between British English (BrE) and American English (AmE) such as spelling, meaning, pronunciation, usage, and even vocabulary. The two varieties of English, as a matter of fact, are often confusing especially who study and use English as second and foreign language. Because of their differences and distinctive features, the speakers often find difficulties which one to use. This condition, then can lead to misunderstanding and misinformation and this finally causes ineffective communication.  This paper is attempting to review the unique features of BrEand  AmEfocusing on the vocabulary.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of Task Base Language Teaching (TBLT) on tertiary ESOL learners’ academic writing achievement in tertiary level. Therefore, the experimental research was applied to this study. The control group was taught through Classical Method (CM) while the experiment group was taught through Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT) method. Furthermore, the pre-test and post-test were administered to students in control group and experiment group (30 students in each group). The data were tabulated by employing t-test in Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21. Based on the data analysis, the result indicated that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a significant effect of Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT) method on tertiary ESOL learners’ writing achievement compared to Classical Method (CM) of teaching.

Abstract

“Saya adalah pemimpin yang sudah berpengalaman, maka pilihlah saya dan jangan pilih pemimpin yang belum berpengalaman “ (jargon kampanye  pilpres, 2014). Atau  “Setiap siswa wajib mengumpulkan tugas akhir  tepat waktunya, dan jika tidak dapat, harus memberikan alasan yang jelas (tuturan guru pada siswa). Atau “Anarki Pemisahan Wilayah” (Headline, majalah Tempo,Feb, 2009).  Kelihatannya, ungkapan dan pernyataan di atas adalah bentuk-bentuk ujaran dalam praktek organisasi institusi. Berkatian dengan pernyataan di atas, tulisan ini akan membahasa setting genre,ujaran dan  praktek bahasa dalam organisasi institusi.

Abstract

Pada dasarnya membaca adalah aktivitas belajar yang menyenangkan untuk membangunkan rakasaa (otak) yang tidur. Dengan membaca, maka otak akan terangsang dan kognisi berkembang.Di samping itu, membaca juga mampu mengoptimalkan mata dan sekaligus otak sebagai kaitan antara aktivitas membaca dan berpikir dan sebagai kunci dalam kemahiran membaca dan berpikir ( Hamijaya, dkk, 2008). Tulisan ini secara historis mengkaji sejarah perkembangan membaca secara longitudinal dari membaca simbol hingga membaca grafem dan fonem.

Abstract

Studi tentang bahasa dan budaya selalu menarik dan menantang bagi ahli bahasa,  pengajar bahasa, praktisi bahasa dan juga pemerhati bahasa. Hal ini terjadi karena topik bahasa dan budaya selalu berkembang dan berubah sesuai dengan pekembangan dan peradaban manusia. Di samping itu,  realitas bahasa dan budaya juga merupakan bagian aktivitas manusia  sehari-hari. Beragam bahasa dan berbeda budaya menjadikan kajian budaya dan bahasa semakin kompleks dan unik.  Keberagaman bahasa dan budaya mencerminkan keunikan dan diferensiasi masyarakat bahasa yang satu dengan masyarakat bahasa yang lainnya. Dengan bahasa yang digunakan oleh masyarakat bahasa tertentu kita dapat mengetahui sistem nilai, tradisi, karatkter masyarakat tertentu. Sebaliknya dengan budaya, kita juga dapat memahami realitas bahasa masyarakat tertentu. Dengan demikian hubungan bahasa dan budaya bersifat asimetris. Abstract

Abstract  Perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi (information communication and technology –ICT) dalam beberapa tahun terakhir berkembang dengan sangat cepat dan luas. Pada dasarnya, ICT telah digunakan diberbagai aspek kehidupan seperti perdagangan, industri, jasa, pendidikan dan sebagainya. Dalam bidang pendidikan, para pakar pendidikan dan pakar ICT berkolaborsi menciptakan berbagai inovasi pembelajaran berbasis ICT. FLIP learning dan atau FLIP classroom merupakan wujud nyata implementasi pembelajaran berbasis ICT dalam dunia pendidikan khususnya dalam proses belajar mengajar. Abstract

Abstrak Puisi tidak akan berarti apa-apa bagi pembaca bila tidak dimaknai. Ketepatan memaknai puisi tergantung pada kemampuan pembaca, tingkat kompleksitas kebahasaan puisi yang digunakan, dan pendekatan yang digunakan dalam memaknai puisi tersebut. Puisi sebagai karya sastra yang kompleks dari perspektif bahasa yang digunakan membuat  penikmat puisi mengalami kesulitan dalam memaknai puisi tersebut. Penggunaan pendekatan yang benar secara teoritis dan empiris sangat membantu untuk mendapatkan makna yang sesungguhnya. Tulisan ini membahas penggunaan pendekatan semiotik dalam mengkaji makna sebuah puisi.  Kata kunci: Pendekatan semiotik, puisi, makna
