Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating how extensive reading affects students’ reading attitude and comprehension. Based on two participants’ pretest and posttest results and analyzing the results of interviews, the study reveals that extensive reading tends to promote participants’ reading comprehension as indicated by the improvement of their scores in posttest and participants’ reading attitude as indicated by their responses to interviews. Their positive attitude develops particularly because of the autonomy given to them to select any materials in their interest as when finding interesting reading texts beyond their current linguistic competence, which is not recommended to read in extensive reading, they struggle to understand them regardless of their reading proficiency. Their positive attitude is also shown by their increasing reading amount week after week and their dreams to have a private library and be lifelong readers. Moreover, exposure to a large number of different texts, a large array of words, and different topics enables them to build background knowledge which helps them understand texts better which subsequently affects their reading ability positively.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate the employment of Other-Initiated Repair Strategies (OIR Strategies) in solving understanding problem in EFL learners’ conversation and to examine the kinds of trouble sources that prompt the employment of OIR Strategies. The participants were nine EFL learners participating in a speaking class in small university in Indonesia. To elicit the learners’ conversations two communicative tasks, Spot the Difference and Desert Island were used. The learners’ conversations during task performance were video-recorded, then, transcribed using the conventions proposed by Markee (2000) and analyzed qualitatively using Conversation Analysis method. The results showed that EFL learners managed to employ eight types of OIR Strategies comprising of 62 instances in total. The strategies are unspecified repair, interrogative repair, partial repeat plus a question word repair, partial repeat repair, understanding check repair, request for repetition, request for definition, and correction repair. Three different types of trouble sources triggered the use of OIR Strategies, namely linguistic-related problem, interactional-related problem, and meaning-related problem. The study demonstrated that by employing different OIR Strategies, even EFL learners with limited proficiency in English managed to take initiatives to overcome the understanding problem in conversations as part of their learning process. Therefore, the EFL teachers need to consider incorporating the teaching of OIR Strategies as part of their speaking class to improve the students’ fluency.

Abstract

Improving Students' Ability in English through Non-English Courses. The needs for English felt by the university students are more realistic than those felt by the students at the lower levels of education. Their immediate need for English can be realistic when they have to read English textbooks and other references required in their courses. The lecturers of non-English courses have an important role in making the students' need for English realistic. They can make it realistic by assigning the students to do one or all of the following: read textbooks and references written in English, make a 'clipping' of articles written in English relevant to the topics covered in their courses, write papers in Indonesian based on the references and articles they read, and use English as a medium of instruction partially or fully.

Abstract

Abstract: The study aims to investigate how Indonesian authors write their English and Indonesian research article (RA) discussion sections. There were 7 Indonesian authors who write 1 English research article and 1 Indonesian research article published in national accredited journals. The study executed rhetorical moves designed by Swales (1990) to be used here as the instrument. In general, the findings show that 7 Indonesian authors operate not too different rhetorical patterns of English and Indonesian RA discussion sections viewed from moves occurrences, completeness, and order of the move structures. Nearly all 7 Indonesian authors show 5 moves in the English RA discussion section consisting of statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-deduction and hypothesis. They use 6 moves in the Indonesian RA discussion section consisting of statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-exemplification-deduction and hypothesis. However, each author has his/her specific move structure seen from the moves order and moves frequency. The specific uses of move structure are explained with examples in the forms of sentences or phrases. Thus, the authors are in the position of having their rhetorical patterns suited the context and communities. Keywords: Indonesian authors, research articles (RA), discussion sections, rhetorical patterns PILIHAN POLA RETORIKA PENULIS INDONESIA DALAM MENULIS BAGIAN PEMBAHASAN ARTIKEL PENELITIAN BERBAHASA INGGRIS DAN BERBAHASA INDONESIA Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti bagaimana penulis Indonesia menulis bagian pembahasan artikel penelitian berbahasa Inggris dan berbahasa Indonesia. Sebagian besar penulis memilih 5 moves pada bagian pembahasan yang berbahasa Inggris, yaitu statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-deduction and hypothesis. Bagian pembahasan yang berbahasa Indonesia memiliki 6 moves, yaitu statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-exemplification-deduction and hypothesis. Walaupun begitu, setiap penulis memiliki pilihan moves tertentu dari segi urutan moves dan frekuensi kemunculannya. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penulis-penulis Indonesia tersebut memilih pola retorikanya disesuaikan dengan konteks dan komunitas pembaca artikel penelitian di jurnal ilmiah yang mereka pilih.Kata Kunci: Penulis Indonesia, artikel penelitian (RA), bagian pembahasan, pola retorika

Abstract

The change of the status of the National Exam (NE) from high-stakes testing to low-stakes testing inspired the researchers to explore its effects on the teaching and learning of English. This qualitative exploratory study tried to investigate how English teachers taught their students to prepare NE at senior high schools in two different functions by involving six English teachers from three schools varying in the quality in terms of the schools’ demography, academic achievement, and facilities. The study was also strengthened by a set of secondary data from the results of the NE in 2015. The result of study involving the six teachers shows that the higher the quality of the schools the less they are affected by the change of the functions of the NE. The result of the analysis involving the secondary data shows that in spite of the change of its function, the NE tends to remain a high-stakes testing.

Abstract

Abstract: This study is intended to enhance students’ reading vocabulary through task-based instruction. It was also devised not only to answer how the strategy can enhance students’ reading vocabulary but also to get data about students’ vocabulary retention two weeks after the implementation and students’ responses towards the strategy. The participantS of this study were 30 ninth graders in SMPN 11 Malang in the second semester of 2019/2020 academic year. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used as the research design. Vocabulary test, questionnaire, observation sheet, and interview session were the instruments of this study. There were three vocabulary tests, namely vocabulary test one, vocabulary test two, and delayed test. The result showed that there was an improvement in students' scores. 90% of students achieved at least 25 improvement points for the vocabulary test two, 61% of students passed the delayed vocabulary test, and 97.5% of students responded positively toward the strategy. TBI could enhance vocabulary acquisition from the context and task’s characteristics. The context of the text helped students to give a clue about some forgotten vocabularies, so they felt less burdened to remember the vocabulary in the whole text because they generally understand the context of the text. Keywords: task-based instruction, reading vocabulary, vocabulary retention Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kosakata membaca siswa melalui instruksi berbasis tugas.
