Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the 1st semester teacher college students’ perceptions of the interaction between them and their teacher in Basic English class through class discussion interactive teaching in Basic English class. To create a successful and effective teaching, cooperation between teacher and students is needed. An effective teacher must be able to present their material, effectively manage their classroom according to the lesson they’ve planned, accommodate their students’ needs, and enhance their students’ participation in the learning activities. Participants were 25 students who reported their perceptions on the interactive teaching in addition to their learning process. Result suggested that the interactive teaching fostered student participation during the learning activities. Teaching method such as class discussion that involved the whole class participation to raise questions and discuss about the answer or solution would require interaction between teacher and students more intensively. This interactive teaching method could be implemented for college students, especially because they were expected to participate more actively in the learning activities and become more independent learners. This study could also be an alternative for any educational practitioners who would like to foster their students’ participation.

Abstract

Teachers have employed in-class oral presentations to practice the pre-service teachers’ speaking skills as they are prepared to become future English teachers who are fluent in communication using English in a globalization era, However, effectively assessing student presentations is challenging, particularly in terms of practical administration of assessment. Therefore, a video recording as an alternative assessment tool was utilized to provide opportunities for learners and their peers to evaluate their speaking and presentation skills. They will need to combine video-camera on their cell phones or tablets and the use e-google form to give immediate feedback for their improvement. The study used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were gathered from the students’ recording videos, reflective journal, feedback from e-google form. The results showed that students got more enthusiastic in presenting their ideas using the video-camera. Furthermore, presentation skills such as the use of eye contact, body posture, and voice were found as other factors that supported the English speaking skills of the pre-service teachers.

Abstract

Based on low student test scores in a grade XI science class at ABC Senior High School in Yogyakarta, the observer found that the students had difficulties understanding the Movement System. This happened because the learning process in the classroom focused on the teacher and was monotone in nature so the instructional objective was not reached as proven by the low test results. Based on this problem, the observer planned and designed a peer tutor learning process to increase the students' cognitive results. The observer used Classroom Action Research which went from October 20, 2015 to October 29, 2015. There were two cycles that involved 22 students. The instruments used were test sheets, student feedback sheets, observation sheets, mentor interviews with the observer, and the observer’s journal reflections. In the process of analyzing the instruments, the observer used simple mathematic calculations and qualitative analysis techniques. The research showed that the students’ cognitive level (knowledge) increased from 77.27% to 86.36% and the cognitive level (understanding) increased from 63.64% to 90.9% which suggests that cognitive learning can be increased through the implementation of peer tutoring learning method. BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Dari hasil tes siswa XI MIPA di SMA ABC Yogyakarta, peneliti menemukan siswa kesulitan dalam mengerjakan tes yang diberikan sehingga berdampak pada rendahnya hasil belajar kognitif siswa. Hal ini dikarenakan kegiatan pembelajaran di dalam kelas yang berpusat pada guru dan berjalan monoton sehingga tujuan instruksional tidak tercapai yang dibuktikan dengan hasil tes yang rendah. Berdasarkan permasalahan ini, peneliti merencanakan dan merancang metode tutor sebaya dalam pembelajaran. Hal ini ditujukan untuk melihat peningkatan hasil belajar kognitif siswa. Peneliti menggunakan metode Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang dilakukan sejak 15 Oktober 2015 hingga 29 Oktober 2015. Penelitian yang dilaksanakan berlangsung sebanyak dua siklus dengan melibatkan 22 siswa. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah lembar tes, lembar kusioner siswa, lembar observasi dan wawancara mentor dan rekan sejawat serta jurnal refleksi peneliti. Dalam menganalisis instrumen tersebut, peneliti menggunakan penghitungan matematika sederhana dan analisis secara kualitatif deskriptif. Dari hasil penelitian, diperoleh peningkatan kognitif pada level mengetahui dari 77,27% menjadi 86,36% dan peningkatan kognitif dari 63,64% menjadi 90,9% pada level memahami dalam materi Sistem Gerak sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa hasil belajar kognitif dapat ditingkatkan melalui penerapan metode pembelajaran tutor sebaya.

Abstract

Through an observation done of fifth graders in an elementary school at Karawaci, Tangerang, it was found that the students did not show much motivation in learning English in the classroom. They did not show interest in doing their tasks and they did not show respect while doing activities with their friends during lesson times. Motivation is important in energizing, directing, and sustaining (good) behavior of students during the learning process in the classroom. Therefore, the researcher decided to use a relay race game to solve the problem. It was expected that through the relay race game, the students’ motivation would be increased and how the steps of the game would increase the students’ motivation in learning English. The method used was Classroom Action Research and data was collected by using several instruments, such as an observation checklist done by the mentor and researcher’s partner, questionnaires done by the students, and reflective journals done by the researcher. After conducting the research, the results showed that the motivation of students learning English increased using a relay race game and the steps of the game must be done consistently to make it effective.BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Selama masa pengamatan yang dilakukan di kelas V di sebuah sekolah dasar di Tangerang, ditemukan bahwa siswa tidak menunjukkan ketertarikan terhadap pelajaran dan usaha dalam mengerjakan tugas- tugas di kelas. Siswa tidak menunjukkan motivasi yang besar dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di kelas. Metode yang diadakan oleh peneliti adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana permainan Relay Race dapat meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris dan bagaimana prosedur permainan Relay Race diterapkan di pembelajaran tersebut. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah observasi checklist oleh mentor dan rekan peneliti, kuisioner oleh siswa, dan jurnal refleksi oleh peneliti. Setelah mengadakan penelitian ini, hasil yang diperoleh adalah bahwa motivasi siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris dapat meningkat menggunakan permainan Relay Race.

Abstract

Based on observing grade VIII students, the researcher found that the students were passive during the learning process when it came to sharing ideas or opinions, asking and answering questions, and solving problems given by the teacher.  The researcher decided to implement the TGT cooperative learning method in order to solve the problem. It was expected that through the implementation of this method, the students' activeness would increase. Observation was also used to discover which steps of the TGT method might increase a student’s activeness. The research was conducted on October 28, 2015 and October 29, 2015, with 22 students as the subjects using the Class Action Research Method. Data was collected and analyzed by using student’s activeness observation sheets, TGT’s implementation observation sheets, the researcher’s reflection journal, student’s questionnaire sheets, and mentor’s feedback. Based on the data analysis from those instruments, it can be concluded that the students' activeness increases by implementing the TGT method.  The steps of the TGT method implemented consisted of class preparation, learning in study groups, games and tournaments, and team recognition and these increased students' activeness in learning Biology.BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Berdasarkan observasi di kelas VIII, peneliti menemukan masalah bahwa siswa-siswa pasif selama pembelajaran misalnya dalam mengemukakan ide atau pendapat, bertanya dan menjawab pertanyaan guru, serta mengerjakan soal yang diberikan oleh guru. Maka, peneliti memutuskan untuk menerapkan metode TGT dalam mengatasi permasalahan tersebut. Diharapkan melalui penerapan metode ini, tujuan peneliti dapat tercapai, yaitu meningkatkan keaktifan siswa melalui penerapan metode TGT dan mengetahui langkah-langkah penerapan metode TGT dalam peningkatan keaktifan siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) pada tanggal 28 dan 29 Oktober 2015 dengan subjek 22 siswa. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan instrumen lembar observasi keaktifan siswa, lembar observasi penerapan TGT, jurnal refleksi peneliti, lembar angket siswa, dan umpan balik mentor. Berdasarkan analisis data dari berbagai instrumen tersebut, maka keaktifan siswa meningkat dengan diterapkannya metode TGT dan selama penerapansetiap tahapan TGT yang terdiri dari tahap penyajian kelas, tahap belajar dalam kelompok, tahap permainan turnamen, dan tahap penghargaan kelompok dapat meningkatkan keaktifan siswa pada pelajaran Biologi.

Abstract

Mathematics is an important part of education. Through mathematics learning, students are expected to think systematically, logically, critically, creatively and consistently. Often when learning math, however, students make mistakes. These errors, when viewed plainly are reasonable mistakes. Nevertheless, they should not be allowed to happen continuously. If the errors are left unchecked, then the process of developing students’ knowledge will not improve. Based on observations in the grade 8A class at Sekolah Lentara Harapan in Medan, students usually made mistakes in solving mathematics problems. This study aims to analyze the types of errors made by students in solving mathematics problem and the causes of those mistakes. The research method used was the qualitative research method. The researcher gathered data through tests, interviews, and observations. Tests and observations data were gathered from 35 students in class 8 A. The subjects were 6 students who were chosen based on their results and certain criteria. Afterward, they were interviewed about their test results to gather further information about the types of errors and the factors which caused the error. The mistakes then were analyzed based on the types of errors using Newman’s procedures which are (1) reading errors, (2) comprehension errors, (3) transformation errors, (4) process skills errors, and (5) encoding errors.  The results showed that students performed all types of errors. Factors which caused students to make those errors were that they did not understand the meaning of symbols used, they used several symbols incorrectly, they could not to read the symbol, they forgot the proper formulas to be used, they wrote the formula in a rush, they did not master the pre-requisite topic of algebra arithmetic operation, they were careless, and they did the test in a rush.BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Pelajaran matematika merupakan salah satu bagian penting dalam bidang pendidikan. Melalui pembelajaran matematika, siswa diharapkan dapat melatih cara berpikir secara sistematis, logis, kritis, kreatif dan konsisten. Dalam kenyataannya, sering kali ketika belajar matematika, siswa melakukan kesalahan-kesalahan. Kesalahan-kesalahan ini jika dilihat secara kasat mata merupakan kesalahan-kesalahan yang wajar. Tetapi tentunya kesalahan ini tidak boleh dibiarkan terjadi terus-menerus. Jika kesalahan tersebut dibiarkan, maka proses pengembangan pengetahuan siswa tidak akan berjalan dengan baik. Berdasarkan observasi di kelas VIII A SLH Medan, siswa sering melakukan kesalahan pada saat mengerjakan soal-soal matematika. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis jenis-jenis kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh siswa dalam mengerjakan soal matematika materi fungsi serta faktor penyebabnya. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan tes, wawancara dan observasi partisipatif. Tes dan observasi dilakukan di kelas VIII A yang terdiri dari 35 siswa. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari 6 siswa yang dipilih berdasarkan hasil tes dengan kriteria tertentu kemudian diwawancarai terkait hasil pekerjaannya untuk memperoleh informasi yang lebih jelas mengenai jenis kesalahan yang dilakukan serta faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya kesalahan tersebut. Kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh siswa dianalisis berdasarkan jenis-jenis kesalahan pada prosedur Newman yang terdiri dari (1) kesalahan membaca soal, (2) kesalahan memahami masalah, (3) kesalahan transformasi, (4) kesalahan keterampilan proses dan (5) kesalahan penulisan jawaban. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa melakukan semua jenis kesalahan tersebut. Faktor penyebabnya adalah siswa tidak mengerti makna simbol, terdapat simbol-simbol tertentu yang tidak dapat dimaknai dengan tepat, lupa cara membaca simbol, lupa rumus yang harus digunakan, terburu-buru saat menuliskan rumus, kurang menguasai materi prasyarat yaitu operasi hitung bentuk aljabar, kurang teliti serta terburu-buru dalam mengerjakan soal.

Abstract

Pandemi CoVid19 yang berkelanjutan dengan adanya pemberlakuan pembatasan kegiatan masyarakat (ppkm) mikro yang berkepanjangan menyebabkan bertambahnya pengangguran, pembatalan pembelajaran tatap muka bagi siswa/i sekolah dasar, dan sulitnya mempertahankan keberlangsungan serta kualitas bimbingan belajar (bimbel). Hal-hal tersebut dialami jemaat dan aktivis gereja usia produktif, baik yang belum berkeluarga, maupun yang sudah berkeluarga dimana para ibu rumah tangga sangat memerlukan kecakapan menjadi guru bagi anak-anak mereka di rumah ketika home-based learning. Oleh karena itu, tujuan dari pelatihan manajemen bimbingan belajar yang juga mencakup pedagogi mengajar Matematika dasar serta Bahasa Inggris adalah untuk memampukan peserta membuka dan mempertahankan bimbel online, membuka lapangan pekerjaan bagi mereka yang terdampak pandemic dan memampukan para ibu rumah tangga mendampingi putra-putri mereka di tahun ajaran baru 2021/2022. Setelah melakukan needs analysis melalui e-form yang dibagikan ke peserta, para dosen pengajar tidak hanya membawakan materi manajemen pendidikan serta pedagogi pembelajaran Matematika serta Bahasa Inggris dalam pelatihan sinkronus sebanyak 4 pertemuan, tetapi juga memberikan pendampingan asinkronus selama 3 minggu, diberikan kepada 30 peserta melalui media zoom dan whatsapp. Hasil kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan telah memampukan sebagian peserta untuk membuka bimbel baru dan mendampingi anak-anak mereka belajar Matematika dan Bahasa Inggris di rumah menggunakan sumber-sumber belajar online yang otentik.

Abstract

Children in the digital era are exposed to the advancement of information technology and multimedia that might bring both positive and negative influence toward their development. During early childhood, children are using mostly their senses to explore the world around them, including learning some values from the story books exposed to them. However, parents or family do not give optimal support in the children’s learning process. Therefore, it is a challenge for English language teaching (ELT) pre-service teachers in implementing a digital storytelling to engage the children with the learning material and creative ways to optimally utilize technology, but at the same time give a comprehensive support for children to improve their English skills as well as the embedded values within the stories. The present study aims to reveal the opportunities and challenges in fostering a child’s reading interest through digital storytelling. All the details were recorded through observations, responses from the children while they were watching the digital story, and a daily journal written by ELT pre-service teacher. From the result, it was found that through their interactions with the stories, children were exposed by the values embedded, furthermore, their reading interest is developing where more optimal support from the parents or caregivers is urgently needed.

Abstract

Selama pandemi, kebutuhan belajar siswa beralih menjadi online. Pembelajaran secara online juga membawa beberapa dampak dalam pembelajaran, ditemuai banyak kehilangan pembelajaran, sehingga tidak heran banyak ditemui kesulitan belajar sehingga perlu pendampingan bagi siswa pada saat belajar. Adanya kebutuhan pendampingan belajar bagi anak-anak jemaat di HKBP Binong, bimbingan belajar SIGMA menyediakan pelayanan les gratis secara online bagi warga jemaat  HKBP Binong Permai khususnya anak-anak dari bangku SD sampai SMA, namun kegiatan bimbel ini juga terbuka untuk banyak siswa diberbagai daerah dan tidak terbatasi tempat, karena dilakukan secara online. Kegiatan bimbel dilakukan secara online setiap sabtu selama 2 jam, tujuannya agar siswa dapat terbantu untuk memahami pembelajaran di sekolah dan siswa juga dapat semakin termotivasi untuk belajar. Setelah dilaksanakan bimbingan belajar kemudian dievaluasi pelaksanaannya. Terlihat siswa semakin bertambah pengetahuannya dan juga ada siswa yang antusias mengikuti bimbel dimana siswa antusias siswa menanyakan pelajaran diluar jadwal bimbel, namun tidak dipungkiri juga bahwa ada siswa yang malas. Orang tua juga antusias mendorong anaknya untuk mengikuti bimbel, terlihat dari ada orang tua yang meminta PPT ketika anaknya lupa mencatat, mengingatkan anaknya jadwal les, duduk disamping anaknya selama les
