Abstract

Half-caste refers to the mixed-blood in Australia who suffer much in their lives. They are not a part of Aborigines nor the Whites. They are not accepted by everyone and being mistreated. They suffer from unfair treatment and are also incapable of making decisions to get a better life. The purpose of the study is to reveal the state of limbo of the half-caste in Katharine Susannah Prichard’s “Marlene” and “Flight” (1967). The method used is qualitative by applying Wilson Harris’ state of limbo theory on the post-colonialism approach. Limbo is a transition where a person or community belongs in two contexts. There are three characteristics of limbo that are needed to be analyzed in the chosen literary work; anxieties, questions, and conflicts that every person or community cannot embrace. As a result, “Marlene” and “Flight” each have three characters of limbo. “Marlene” demonstrates the half-caste’s disrespectful life by being locked in the camp and not able to decide on making their life better. “Flight” demonstrates the three half-caste children that are taken forcedly to the Aborigines Protection Board. These children are locked in the room of the carrier so that they will not run away. Stuck in the camp, locked in the room, and unable to do anything to make their life better defines the limbo state of the half-caste’s lives.

Abstract

Andrea Cremer and David Levithan’s Invisibility is a contemporary novel with a twist of magical realism. Stephen and Elizabeth, the main characters, had made the story in the novel different colors. The study focused on how magical realism was presented in the novel through its five characteristics: irreducible element, the phenomenal world, unsettling doubts, merging realms, and disruptions of time, space, and identity. Applying Wendy B. Faris’ perspective, this study examined extraordinary things that happened within the ordinary to sort them into said characteristics of magical realism. The qualitative research method applied proved that in Cremer and Levithan’s Invisibility, there existed extraordinary events for each magical realism element, such as Stephen’s abrupt disappearance when Elizabeth blinked as the irreducible element; Stephen’s acceptance of being invisible and living in a accessible place like New York as the phenomenal world; Elizabeth’s doubts concerning Stephen’s form as the unsettling doubt; an ordinary-looking comic store being a magical office in disguise as the merging realm; and Elizabeth’s ability to enter into a different side of the regular universe as the disruption of space.

Abstract

This research was meant to describe the shape of sexuality in Bryan Singer's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2018) by analyzing the main character from the Queer perspective. Bisexual is a term used to describe relationships of people both with the same sex and the opposite sex for a certain period, including being attracted to or having sexual activity. Bohemian Rhapsody discusses Queen's career journey by showcasing the lead singer as a highlight. Freddie struggles to live in a world of hedonism and stigma, preconceptions, and the erasure of Bisexuality as a social identity. It will answer how to construct binary desires and how society shapes them by applying theory from Butler's work "Gender Trouble." to fulfil this study; In this study, either textual or visual film analysis will be applied to the subsequent discussion. 1.) Determine forms of Bisexuality in Bohemian Rhapsody; 2.) Reveal Bisexuality towards the character interactions in Bohemian Rhapsody. Through this interpretation, bisexual visibility is frequently devalued and forced to join monosexism with similar terms such as gay and lesbian, resulting in the erasure of Bisexuality. This behaviour is predicated on the social and cultural stereotypes attached to "bisexual."
