Problems on English Word Stress Placement Made by Indonesian Learners of English Sukardi Weda

Abstract

AbstractThis study focuses its investigation on the problems of stress placement in English words made by Indonesian learners of English (ILE). The subjects of the study were the students of English Literature Study Program Universitas Negeri Makassar (N = 66, 20 or 30.30% males and 46 or 69.69 females). Results of the study show that the Indonesian learners of English (ILE) were able to put the an acute accent (´) illustrating the primary stress on monosyllabic words (one syllable words) easily; two syllable words, except for word permit; three syllable words, except for the word determine; words with suffixes in reading test; words with prefixes, except for word imbalance; compound words, except for word sunrise; noun phrases; stress on verbs and stress on nouns. The ILE were not able to put an acute accent (´) illustrating the main stress on polysyllabic words with suffixes in written test, but the ILE has excellent competence for the words objectivity and disagreement. The ILE therefore tended to put the correct stress placement on reading test than on written test. The ILE often mistress the words in polysyllabic words, like: permit, determine, imbalance, accuracy, anchorage, etc.  Additionally, descriptive statistics shows the percentage of correct and incorrect pronunciation made by Indonesian Learners of English (ILE) in recording and written test. The educational implication of this study is that the practice for stress placement of words, ranging from monosyllabic words to polysyllabic words needs to be taught in English learning and teaching process in the classroom setting. This in keeping with the results of the questionnaires that ‘Learning correct stress placement needs large portion in EFL classroom’ with a mean 3.6061 and SD = .87493 and ‘Correct stress placement on words is important’ with a mean of 4.1515 and SD = .68483. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study focuses on finding out whether or not the use of Digital Storytelling (DST) develops the students’ listening comprehension and to find out the students’ learning interest towards the use of DST. The research employed QUAN – Qual model. The writers gathered the data by using listening comprehension tests and open ended questions. The finding of the study revealed that the students’ result of post-test for experimental group was higher than the students’ result in post-test for control group. The difference of the students’ score was statistically significant; the probability value is smaller than significant level (0.000 < 0.05). The result was H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. While, the open ended question result showed that students agree that learning English by using digital story is a good supporting media since they have used it for about four weeks in the process of teaching and learning.

Abstract

This research explored the influence of lecturer’s competences toward students’ writing proficiency at the English Education Study Program of Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University, Indonesia. The research question that was raised up of this research was do the lecturer competence influence students’ writing proficiency? This research aimed to investigate the influence of lecturer competence toward students’ writing proficiency. This research employed ex post facto method. The population was the fourth semester students who registered in academic year 2013/2014 for Writing III. There were 51 students were as sample of this research, selected using si.mple random sampling technique. The data collected using questionnaire and writing test. The data analyzed by applying descriptive and inferential statistics. The research found that the value of Fcount that was 3.608 at significance value was 0.035. It meant Fcount was greater than Ftable (3.608 > 2.57) and the value of significance was fewer than α (0.035 < 0.05). Those meant the regression model can predict the level of students’ writing proficiency which influenced by lecturer competence and the lecturer competence had positive and significant influence toward students’ writing proficiency at the English Education Study Program of Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University, Indonesia.

Abstract

 In the teaching learning process, a lively and friendly atmosphere in the  classroom between teacher and students is the key to promote effective interaction. This study investigates an EFL classroom at the course in the terms of interaction between teacher and students to see how positive politeness strategies used by the teacher and the effect of positive politeness strategies in promoting effective interaction. One class of conversation class at the course was observed and recorded by the researcher. The recording were transcribed and analyzed by making use of related positive politeness strategies and effective interaction. Also, interview was done to get deeper data. The findings showed that positive politeness strategies existed in this class and it has created effective interaction between teacher and students and among the students.

Abstract

These studies turned into carried out to determine multilingual interaction in the multilingual EFL classroom between students and teachers. The purpose of this takes a look at was to decide the multilingual interaction and perception of EFL teachers on students' multilingual interactions in EFL. This research used a descriptive qualitative. The subjects were six students and one English teacher in setting SMAN 4 Takalar. Researchers used classroom observations and interviews as research instruments. This reveals and illustrates that multilingual interaction in students' EFL classes is very rarely used because in general students mostly use the Makassarese compared to combining Indonesian with English. That the interaction in the classroom is, classified into categories, namely the teacher-student interaction, the teacher-student interaction (i) the student-teacher interaction, and the student-student interaction. Several students’ interviews also found that some students use social media as a method of mastering their language so that they are not rigid in terms of interaction even by using multiple languages at once. Meanwhile, the teacher's perception that stands out about the interactions carried out by students is the lack of vocabulary they use, so that the teacher can distinguish which students have high and weak levels of multilingual interactions in the classroom

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out and describe student perception of the implementation of storytelling enhancing their speaking skills the third-grade students at Sekolah Usaha Perikanan Menengah (SUPM) Bone. The researchers applied the descriptive method. The data was collected by questionnaire. In analyzing data, the researchers used the Likert scale which includes five-point scales: strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree, and strongly disagree. The population of this research was 162 students in the third grade in the academic year of 2021/2022. The sample took by using the cluster random sampling technique. The results confirmed that the mean score of the student perception of the use of storytelling in improving students speaking is 40.35 which is categorized as strongly fine. The analysis of the student perception showed that the implementation of the storytelling method in the English learning method affected significantly student perception of attending the class during teaching English speaking.

Abstract

Psychological conflict is a condition that we often encounter in our daily lives. It isalso known as interpersonal conflict and is defined as a conflict caused by the characteritself. Commonly, it arises when people make difficult decisions. According to Kurt Lewin’s theory, psychological conflicts are divided into three types: (1) approach-approach conflict (an individual presented with two desirable alternatives), (2) avoidance-avoidance conflict (an individual presented with two undesirable alternatives), and (3) approach-avoidance conflict (an individual presented with twochoices, desirable and undesirable alternatives at the same time). In literary work,a character is a person who has a conflict, and then they are taking action to solve the problem that happens. Every problem must also have an impact that can affect life, particularly on ourselves, both mentally and physically. That’s why the researcher carrying out this research is to analyze what kinds of psychological conflicts were experienced by Capt. Richard Phillips and how these psychological conflicts impact his mental state. This research method is descriptive and qualitative with a focus on Kurt Lewin`s theory. This research data is taken from Captain Phillips’s movie. Other data were collected from various references, namely journals, thesis, articles, and online sources. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing (Miles and Huberman, 1994). In this study, based on the actions, feelings, and utterances of the main character, the researcher found 29 data with the dominant psychological conflict being avoidance-avoidance conflict. The impact of the psychological conflict experienced by Captain Richard Phillips as the main character is mental stress and poor physical health.

Abstract

This research analyzes three YouTube videos by Nessie Judge entitled “Exlusive! BCL Opens Chronology of Events That Night!, Jerome Polin Happy National Examination Canceled!!! and Najwa Shihab's Choice About President 2019! Boy William Laughing!”. The analysis mainly concentrated more on the switching of codes that was done by Boy William and the people he invites to collaborate with in his videos. This study aims to determine the types of code switching used by Boy William and the people he invites to collaborate with in his videos and find out the reasons why he uses them. This research provided use of descriptive analytic method and primarily concentrates on the ideas put forth by Hoffman and Poplack. The data in the data for this research came from transcripts of Boy William's videos, other data were collected from various citations including publications such as books, journals, articles, and theses, in addition to online sources. The data analysis techniques used in this study are based on Miles, Hiberman and Saldana including data collection, data condensation, data display, and finally drawing inferences from the findings in order to arrive at a conclusion. The final results of this study show that the utterances performed by various professions in their videos use 3 types of code switching including, intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and tag switching. As well as showing the function of using code switching used by various professions in their videos.

Abstract

This article journal aims to accomplish two objectives. The first objective is to discover the types of illocutionary acts that are found in playscript "Harry Potter: The Cursed Child", and the second objective is to discover the functions of illocutionary acts that are found playscript "Harry Potter: The Cursed Child". This article journal used a qualitative method. This research also used theory about illocutionary acts by Searle and theory about the function of illocutionary acts by Leech. This research was only focused with utterance by the main character in this play script, Albus Severus Potter. The conclusions in this research are (1) four types of illocutionary acts that were used in play script, they were commissive, representative, expressive and directive. Among 67 illocutionary acts cases that utters by the main character in this play script, 22 cases were representative act, 9 cases were commissive act, 24 cases were directive act, and 12 cases were expressive act, (2) four types of functions of illocutionary acts that used in playscript, they were convivial, collaborative, conflictive, and competitive. Among 67 illocutionary acts uttered by the main character in this play script, 21 cases were collaborative, 24 cases were competitive function, 20 cases were convivial function and 2 cases were conflictive function.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the narrative structure occurred in “The Jungle Book Novel 1894” and “The Jungle Book Film 2016” using the Caroline Denton (2007) Narrative Structure theory and Comparative Literature approach based on aspects of the narrative structure. This research used descriptive qualitative research in order to describe the aspects and its characteristics that are related to the topic. Using the Caroline Denton’s theory, the researcher used categorize the narrative structures in The Jungle Book Film 2016 and The Jungle Book Novel 1894 based 5 aspects. The researcher will also compare the narrative structures with the aspects of film in order to classify the narrative structures in two literary works to find the differences and similarities. The result of this study indicates that there are 13 similarities and 17 differences found in these two literary works based on Setting, Characters, Conflict, Climax, and Resolution aspects of narrative structure. 22 narrative structures are captured in The Jungle Book Film 2016 and 23 narrative structures are captured in The Jungle Book Novel 1894. As a conclusion for this research, the researcher is able to identify the narrative structure and compare them.
