Abstract

The phenomena of language use in the class still become the object of study ever since the languages are essential aspects in classroom interaction. It cannot be denied that in the classroom interaction, the communicative styles of the lecturers and students will be influenced by many aspects. One of them is the social status differences which lead to the occurrence of code-crossing in the class. For that purpose, the study in this paper is directed to explore the occurrence of code-crossing in the class and the factors influencing it. This research applied a qualitative research design taking two English classes and their students at one university in Makassar as the subject. The data of this research were collected by employing classroom observation and audio recording. The data were analyzed descriptively by adopting Discourse Analysis approach which relies on data recording, data transcription, data selection, and data interpretation. The result of the research shows that the lecturers and the students employed code-crossing in EFL classroom interaction which can be seen from the use of low and high code. This study also found that the use of that high and low code in the form of code-crossing of the lecturers and the students is influenced by the power of social status, age differences, the social distance or familiarity, and intimacy between the lecturers and the students. Findings from this study are worthy of reading for English language teaching practitioners in their effort to create effective classroom interaction.

Abstract

This research aimed to investig­ate the characteristics of effective EFL teachers as viewed by the students and various characteristics of effective EFL teachers as viewed by the different students’ English achievement. This research was designed by using qualitative research. This research applied purposive sampling technique. The participants of this research were two classes of SMA Negeri 17 Makassar  in the academic year 2015/2016. The data was collected through class discussion and individual interview. The results of this research suggest that EFL teachers are need to focus on 15 characteristics indicated effective EFL teachers based on government rules (Permendiknas number 16/2007) which are placed into four categories, they are pedagogical, personal, professional, and social competences and in addition, teachers need to improve their academic qualification, pay attention to physical appearance, and adopt the characteristics of younger and female teachers as the most favored by the students. Furthermore, the different students’ achievement affects their view of various characteristics of effective EFL teachers covering assessment and evaluation, learning process, the use of social media, what should be understood, and appearance.

Abstract

Teacher talk undoubtedly makes a certain factor whether the class will meet objectives of teaching and learning process or not. This research investigated (1) students’ perception towards teacher talk that happened during the teaching and learning process, and (2) students’ ideal expectations about their English teacher. This was a descriptive qualitative research. One English teacher and one class of first year senior high students were engaged in the research. The data of this research were collected from transcribed-classroom video recording and interview to some students. The results indicated that (1) students’ perception towards teaching style, such as teaching method, motivating, giving feedback were almost negative and (2) students’ ideal expectations that an English teacher should be more effective, efficient interactive and creative for creating more interesting classroom atmosphere.  Keywords: Teacher Talk, Perception, Expectation

Abstract

Today the world of social media has immersed in the world of education and influencing the world of the students’ activities. It is inevitable that students in many levels of education have been using social media in their life either as students or as interactants in the certain community. Therefore, it is interesting to see the existence of social media among the students. In this study, the researchers highlight the use of social media among the students in the university. This research applied a qualitative research design taking 60 students of English in the universities in Makassar. The data of this research were collected by employing a survey of Google Form and analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The result of the research shows that the English students in the universities in Makassar gave their positive perceptions about the use of social media. The informants has been using social media in their daily life and also nowadays has applied the social media as a tool of learning English. Some advantages and strategies in using social media in learning English were displayed in this study. Findings from this study will become important input for students themselves in the university context and also as beneficial information among the university practitioners in order to make use the social media in the university not only as communication tool but also as learning and teaching tools.

Abstract

Even though the learning environment is still an online class, the implementation of the extensive speaking project is good and also in accordance with the actual method. In a semester, students work on two types of projects: group projects and individual projects. The lecturer allows students to choose their own topics, and students' project-related activities are conducted more outside of the classroom. Students' learning experiences in implementing large speaking projects were also reflected in numerous indicators in this study. These indicators include benefits such as strengthening students' public speaking skills and assisting them in being more critical thinkers, and also increased motivation and speaking fluency. Extensive speaking projects can contribute to developing students' abilities to be more creative, independent, collaborative, communicative, and technological. The project can also promote vocabulary knowledge, practice pronunciation, acquaint students with conveying ideas by extending the topic, and build students' self-confidence in the area of oral communication. As a result, they will be able to speak effectively and openly. The other indicator is the difficulties that students face in conducting extensive speaking projects, such as online learning, which renders the method less than optimally implemented.

Abstract

Our country, Indonesia, is the home of bi/multi-lingual speakers where most people are able to speak two languages at least or more. Most speakers are even good at foreign language, English in particular. Thus, this background causes code switching happens noticeably commonplace. Since it happens very frequently, for some cases it becomes habit. This phenomena also occurs to Gita Savitri, an Indonesian YouTuber who is able to speak several languages. This research aims: 1) to identify types of code switching, and 2) to describe some reasons of the used of code switching by Gita Savitri in selected videos in her YouTube channel. Those videos were chosen based on the sequence and context of speech that is dominant in the occurrence of code switching. This study employs qualitative descriptive method. The data in this research was Gita’s utterances. Researchers used the theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) to analyse the data. Results of this study found fifty times of code-switching occurrence. There were twenty-one utterances of intra-sentential code switching; twenty utterances of inter-sentential code switching; and nine utterances of emblematic code switching. Also, some reasons by Gita Savitri made code switching in her videos were: seven utterances talking about certain topics, five utterances quoting other people, four utterances affirming something or expressing solidarity, four utterances included in connecting sentences, four utterances adventure used for clarification, one speaker’s utterance used to clarify the conversation content to the opposite. Also, five utterances used by speaker’s to express the identity of a group. At last, it is hoped that the findings of this research could be a novel contribution in a field of sociolinguistics, also a new insight for code-switching phenomenon which is probably found very common nowadays in Indonesia.

Abstract

Detail English literary materials were selected and processed to establish a course-book to be implemented in Junior-High Schools. The materials were designed to ignite students’ language study skills namely inspiration, interactivity and creativity as important aspects in English education. The study was a developmental research and experimental study. The data were collected through (a) an English essay test involving different difficulty levels of questions (cognitive, analytic, evaluative and creative), and (b) classroom observation and interview. Results from this study identified that the learning processes and learning results clearly reflected the three language study skills. By providing and facilitating proper interactive reading materials and a lively atmosphere of classroom discussion, students got inspired to get their own ideas, got free to write their own sentences and this circumstance assigned students to become more creative. Such content of an inspirational, interactive and creative course book must be relevant to the students’ preferences like interest and need to induce students think critically by relating things into facts.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types of social conflicts that occur, the influential factors of social conflicts, and the effects that occur on each main character in the selected short story by Lily Yulianti. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method and strukturalism approach based on the social conflict theory of Lewis A. Coser. The data in this study were taken from 3 out of 17 short stories summarized in one book, with each title being 'Kitchen', 'Family Room', and 'Nua, Diani, and Male Leaps'. The conclusions of this study are (1) there are 3 types of social conflicts that occur in the story; Conflict of Interest, Conflict of Social Status, and Conflict of Role, (2) as for the factors that influence the occurrence of the conflict; Bureaucracy, Family Disorganization, Problems of the Young Generation in Modern Society, and Environmental Problems, and (3) the effects that occur on each of the main characters in the story; family disharmony, personality changes, depression, resentment, social and psychological trauma, and gender discrimination against men.

Abstract

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in 1960 in Liverpool. They were largely recognized as the greatest and most influential act of the rock period, with members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. From 1965 to 1969, the Beatles released what many consider to be their best work, including the innovative and widely influential albums Rubber Soul (1965). Revolver (1966), Sgt. Pepper's Lonely-Hearts Club Band (1967), The Beatles (commonly known as the White Album, 1968), and Abbey Road (1969). This study aims to analyze the stylistic features of the popular selected songs; Hey Jude (1986), Let It Be (1970), Yesterday (1965), Here Comes the Sun (1969). The research method that the author used is library research method and the analytical method used is textual analysis. The author analyzes the figurative language on semantic level and the Phonetic devices on phonetic level of stylistic in selected popular songs to understand the difference between each type in figurative language and also phonetic devices. The conclusion of this thesis shows that there are 28 figurative languages found with 8 types: 4 Simile, 6 Metaphor, 3 Personification, 2 Metonymy, 5 Symbol, 2 Paradox. 5 Hyperbole and 1 Irony. The result for phonetic devices shows that in selected songs, there are 14 rhyme, 19 alliteration, 27 assonance, 32 consonants in total from all the selected songs.

Abstract

The movie "Your Name Engraved Herein," by Kuang-Hui Liu, is the subject of this study. The main character in the movie is homosexual, and the writer aims to explore homosexuality through character. This study applied Alan Swingewood's sociological literature theory, which sees literary works as direct reflections of society. In other words, literary works cannot be separated from the social realities that exist in society. This study aims to find out (1) conflict that experienced by main character as gay (2) the way taken by them to overcome the conflict, and (3) the perception of Taiwanese society towards homosexuals reflected in the movie. The results of this research indicate a correlation between real-life conditions in Taiwan in 1987 and the situation depicted in the movie. In the movie, homosexuality is viewed as a mental illness and disorder. Society believes that keeping gays around them will have a negative impact and may lead to others become same-sex lovers. This state is reflected in Kuang-Hui Liu's and his lover's fear of public judgment.
