Abstract

Technology-based online learning platforms have supported and helped Indonesian students to succeed the online learning education amid the novel coronavirus. They are allowed to access learning materials, learning activities, and learning practice for free. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the students’ paradigms on how effective is online learning platforms for their learning process. A qualitative method in form of a case study design was applied to this present study which had a hundred and eighty-five undergraduate students as the subjects. A questionnaire consisting of twenty-five statements was distributed to them through Google Forms. A follow-up interview via WhatsApp video calls was also conducted with the forty students who were chosen randomly to strengthen the findings. The results of this study show that most students agreed that the online learning platform might provide some beneficial effects for them. They mentioned that online activities through this platform were easily followed and challenge them to strive for keeping their balance motivation and interest to accomplish the online learning process. They were comfortable communicating and interacting with classmates and lecturers electronically. Besides, they might also be able to manage their study time and self-disciplined. Therefore, an online learning platform is considered to be a beneficial tool to support online learning environments.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The media essentially supports the teaching and learning process. Video such as from TED Talks source becomes one of the teaching media that can be used by both parties, a teacher and students to improve English skill, especially for speaking skill. In this paper, the purpose is to explore the students' responses toward the implementation of TED Talks in their speaking class. The subjects were 23 undergraduate students who have experienced to watch TED Talks video for supporting their learning process. This study applied a descriptive qualitative method. To gather data, a questionnaires that were distributed through google form with close-ended questions were employed. The findings showed that most students expressed a positive response to the use of TED Talks video to support their speaking class. They assumed that the TED Talks video encouraged them to improve their speaking skill. Besides, there were some benefits to their learning process. They mentioned that they could learn about how to deliver their ideas well, how to express their critical thinking, and how to use appropriate accent, dialect, pronunciation, and fluency. Thus, the students might overcome their difficulties in understanding the speech because of the video’s powerful topics and the delivery speech from non-native speakers.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan media pembelajaran dalam proses belajar mengajar Dasar Grammar bahasa Inggris dalam bentuk website dan memberikan pelatihan kepada para guru dalam menggunakan website grammar. Pengabdian dilakukan di SMA Muhammadiyah Gading Rejo untuk meningkatkan tata bahasa Inggris Dasar siswa kelas X. Metode pengembangan media pembelajaran yang digunakan adalah Research and Development (RD). Media pembelajaran yang dikembangkan adalah media berbasis website. Dalam mengembangkan dan mendesain website terdapat tahap-tahap yang dilakukan yaitu mengidentifikasi tujuan dan sasaran, melakukan analisis instruksional, menentukan perilaku masuk dan karakteristik pelajar, menulis tujuan kinerja, mengembangkan penilaian e-Learning yang mengacu pada kriteria, mengembangkan instruksional Strategi e-Learning, memilih materi pembelajaran dan aktivitas online, melakukan evaluasi formatif, dan melakukan evaluasi sumatif. Kemudian dilaksanakan pelatihan untuk para guru dengan tujuan meningkatkan penguasaan kompetensi guru dalam menggunakan website sebagai inovasi pembelajaran e-leraning.Pelatihan dilakukan dalam bentuk ceramah, tanya jawab, diskusi dan demonstrasi. Hasil yang dicapai dalam kegiatan ini adalah para guru peserta pelatihan telah meningkatkan kemampuannya dalam mengupload materi pembelajaran, menyampaikan materi dan tugas serta melakukan evaluasi berbasis website.

Abstract

Teachers is not only teaching or delivering materials in a class but also being a professional in all aspects of teaching. Teachers cannot ignore their students’ understanding or characteristics in every teaching and learning activity. Moreover, a teacher is considered as a professional job in Indonesia. Thus, they also get additional payment for being a professional as long as they have got a certificate of professionalism. As sophomore students of English Literature in Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia are having some pedagogical subjects which give them a choice to be an English teacher in the future, they take Teaching Material Design (TMD) in their fourth semester. The subject covers how to design a teaching set, prepare a material and media, and learning evaluation. Unfortunately, 86% students thought in preparing teaching media needed more time to prepare and a specific knowledge, especially which is interesting and takes less time in making. So, the researchers give an alternatives medium that has a template theme and interesting, slidesgo. It has many advantages, so they can use it in teaching and suit the theme with the material they are going to teach. In the end, most of the students were glad and thought that it made them easy to prepare teaching media and took less time.

Abstract

The shifting of the teaching-learning process into online learning encourages most English teachers to adapt and employ the proper teaching strategies to achieve the learning goals. This present study aims to investigate the teachers’ perspectives on applying online teaching strategies during the online learning process. A case study was applied in this study and the data were obtained from an observation and a questionnaire that contains two sections including teachers’ teaching strategies in delivering material and providing assignments or projects during the online learning process. The findings show that teachers gave positive responses toward the use of their teaching strategies. In delivering the materials, they applied pre- teaching strategy by mentioning and explaining the topic of their learning material briefly, while-teaching strategies by providing supporting learning media and using interactive teaching strategies, and post-teaching strategies by giving feedback and review of learning materials. On the other hand, they used several strategies when giving assignments and projects to their students by providing individual group works, peer works, and group works. Thus, this study may provide valuable insight for teachers to maintain the efficiency of online learning.

Abstract

Membimbing siswa untuk menguasai tata bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan yang mereka butuhkan merupakan tantangan untuk para guru. Terlebih lagi dalam situasi pandemi saat ini pembelajaran dilaksanakan secara daring. Banyak siswa masih mengalami kesulitan untuk memahami tata bahasa Inggris dasar. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah memberikan solusi media pembelajaran dan pelatihan kepada siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan tata bahasa Inggris dasar melalui website grammar. Kegiatan diawali dengan pengumpulan data, pengembangan website grammar dan pelatihan kepada para siswa. Teknik yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data yang dibutuhkan adalah dengan observasi dan survei analisa kebutuhan siswa dalam pembelajaran tata bahasa dasar dipadukan dengan diskusi dan tanya jawab. Kemudian tim pelaksana mengembangkan website grammar yang dibuat khusus untuk para siswa SMA Muhammadiyah Gading Rejo. Lalu dilanjutkan dengan pelatihan penggunaan website grammar kepada para siswa dalam bentuk ceramah, diskusi, dan tanya jawab. Berdasarkan hasil pengabdian masyarakat dapat disimpulkan para siswa lebih bersemangat, termotivasi, dan lebih menyukai pelajaran tata bahasa Inggris dasar dengan memanfaatkan website grammar karena mereka dapat mengakses materi menggunakan website grammar dimanapun dan kapanpun karena dapat diakses setiap saat dengan mudah Sehingga proses pembelajaran dapat dilaksanakan lebih efektif dan efisien.

Abstract

Since the COVID-19 virus outbreak emerged in the world, all industries and aspects of life have changed, including the education system. Face-to-face learning was compelled to be replaced with online learning. Online Learning has made students experience integrating technology into the teaching and learning process. Technological and environmental problems can lead to challenges that may be faced by the students, especially in learning English as a foreign language. Thus, this study was conducted with the aim to identify the challenges that EFL students faced in learning English as a foreign language during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as describe the students’ strategies to overcome the challenges. This study was designed as a qualitative study. To conduct the study, 10 students of English education major of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia were invited to be the subject. By reason of study from home, an unstructured online interview about the objectives was conducted via the WhatsApp application. This study finding indicated that the most common issue faced by EFL students in this situation is internet access, followed by a lack of learning media, material understanding, academic dishonesty, and laziness.

Abstract

The community service activity aims to build the trainees' self-confidence in the use of basic English in everyday life and enhance the participants' learning enthusiasm during the English training. This service activity has been carried out at the Kasih Nusantara Orphanage for 4 (four) months. The number of training participants consisted of 30 people with educational backgrounds starting from elementary school, junior high school, and high school. In the implementation process, the English training provided is in the form of lectures, questions and answers, discussions, and simulations/practices. The results achieved are that the trainees have increased their ability and confidence in using English. In addition, the response given was positive to the materials provided by the teaching team. Therefore, this community service activity might foster a sense of concern for partners in the application of their knowledge and knowledge so that they have a positive impact on the target partners of this activity.

Abstract

WhatsApp application as the foremost prevalent application for the education field is helpful to support the online teaching and learning process. During the Covid-19 pandemic, WhatsApp application is one of the media to help students in the learning process in online classes. WhatsApp gives useful highlights such as content, call, send videos, sounds, links, locations, documents, and pictures. The purpose of this study is to know if the use of WhatsApp applications enhances English learning during online classes. In this research, a descriptive qualitative method was employed, and to gather the data the researcher used a questionnaire to collect the data. The findings supported the use of WhatsApp applications to help students in learning English during online classes, using WhatsApp to increase students’ enthusiasm for learning English, and using WhatsApp helped students to develop English skills. In conclusion, the use of WhatsApp applications is helpful for students in learning English during online classes.
