Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the systemic approach to develop students’ mastery of adjective. The limitations of adjective mastery in this research were the kind, the use, the form, and the order. This research employed a quasiexperimental design with the non-equivalent control group. Sixty-two students in a private university are majoring in English Education chosen from two classes that were divided into two groups, namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using a systemic approach, while the control group was taught by using lecturing method. The instruments of this research were adjective tests. The data of the experimental group experienced improvement in their mastery of adjective in terms of kind, use, form, and order indicated by the posttest mean score of experimental groups (75.40) that was higher than the posttest mean score of control group (54.6) and the t-test value which was higher than the t-table value (12.991 > 1.671). Furthermore, the researchers found that the element of adjective which experienced most significant development happened on the order. The result of this research indicated that there was significant development between experimental and control class. It means that a systemic approach that was applied in the experimental group could develop the students’ mastery of adjective. Thus, it was concluded that the systemic approach was effective to develop students’ mastery of adjective.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out comprehension strategies used by the students during shadow reading. This research is qualitative research with classroom observation. This research is based on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory that involves scaffolding and zone of proximal development (ZPD). The data is analyzed through problem-solving as comprehension analysis. The comprehension strategies are focused on three aspects of reading namely phonological processing, word recognition, and syntactical processing. This research is restricted to the interactional phase of shadow reading and focused during reading only. The result shows that from those three focuses, there are six comprehension strategies. In the phonological processing, there are repairing incorrect utterance of partner and dividing a word into manageable sound. In the word recognition, there are implicitly asking for repetition to complete the task and giving repetition for incorrect word. In the syntactical processing, there are modifying input in manageable repetition and explicitly requesting repetition to complete the task. Those strategies help the shadower to complete the task. Thus, they can reach ZPD.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the importance of Mendeley reference management software for the accuracy of citation writing and reference lists. This research method is qualitative, using a case study approach. This study asks students to write a brief impression about the importance of using citation manager software such as Mendeley in including citations and simultaneously compiling a bibliography. This research was conducted after students were trained using Mendeley. The subjects of this study were thirty-five students from a private college in the suburb of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Some impressions that appear in this research are citation accuracy, the accuracy of bibliography, synchronization of citations with bibliography, easy synchronization with Digital Object Identifier (DOI) features, and metadata or bibliographic data. Researchers grouped the impressions of students using MindMap software. This research can be concluded that Mendeley reference management software has citation writing accuracy and a significant reference list helps students write papers and or theses.

Abstract

This study aims to create a hybrid learning model, and Linguistics course instructional materials to improve students' language knowledge, theories, and skills, particularly in the English department. A research design and development process were used to construct the learning model and instructional materials. This research entails a lengthy process of determining the needs of students and developing Linguistics products or course material to improve students' capacity or skills in learning language through hybrid learning using a Moodle platform (e-learning). The participants in this study are English department students from Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar. The students in the English Education and Literature department served as the study's sample. The study's findings revealed a hint of a hybrid learning model based on Moodle e-learning, syllabus, Linguistics course design instructional material, and student’s worksheet activities or exercises. The creation of a Moodle-based hybrid learning model in the Linguistics course, which includes learning procedures and steps, teaching materials, and assessment of learning outcomes, is intended to improve student learning abilities, particularly in the English Department, which includes aspects of knowledge, attitudes, and skills under today's curriculum demands. The Linguistics course's teaching materials were built on a Moodle-based hybrid learning paradigm that adheres to active, interactive, and communicative learning concepts. In this learning, active, creative, and communicative learning strategies and techniques and flexible learning strategies and methods are extremely conceivable.
