Abstract

Yogyakarta is well-known as a historical city and the centre of Javanese culture that attracts many tourists to come. In recent year, Yogyakarta has been very popular to domestic and international tourists in that many heritage places in the city have been developed to distinctive tourist destinations, yet no reasonable criteria has been developed to guide its development. This study assumed that places with distinctive identity or character or uniqueness are the most interested object of attraction for tourists. Therefore, the study will explore the sense of place as the important success factor in sustaining a heritage place as tourist attraction and identify aspects of a place that might contribute to its sustainability. Two heritage districts: Kotagede and Kotabaru are selected for evaluating aspects of place that are significantly contributing to the historical and cultural image of the city of Yogyakarta. The study identify and analyze the existing condition of physical attributes, performed activities and conception of the place. Indicators being used are developed from the current research undertaken by geographer and environmental psychologist. The study resulted to the conclusion that an interconnection of many aspects rather than identity of the place is the critical factor for the sustainability of a heritage place.

Abstract

The characteristics of urban parks can attract and makes visitors want to stay longer. The long duration of the visit in the urban park can increase visitor’s attitude toward a place. The longer they stay, the stronger the sense of belonging they have in that place. This current study wants to find out how the grouping of visitors in the urban park was based on the duration of the visit and the characteristics of the park. Data collection was carried out by distributing online questionnaires and the data of 211 respondents was processed for this study. Data was processed by explanatory qualitative method, with open coding, axial coding, and selective coding analyses. The result showed that there were three large groups of visitors in the park, who had different level of attitudes toward urban parks, namely relaxation, escape, and audience group. Audience group was assumed having the highest level of attitude toward urban parks than others. In order to increase the duration of the visit, the urban parks require attractions that are in demand by the audience. Abstract

Abstract

Environment (external factors) and user attributes (internal factors) affect the user's response to the environment. This study aims to uncover how the quality of the environment in high school as an external factor and student motivation as an internal factor affects the academic performance of the students. The research was conducted with qualitative and quantitative approach. Data were collected by survey using an online questionnaire. From the regression analysis, it was found that the dimensions of external factors of "classroom order", "social interaction and supervision" and "air quality" further increased the effectiveness of student learning rather than internal dimensions of "resilience and capacity building". Meanwhile, the decrease in air quality, noise, and environmental pollution can cause student learning disruption. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the learning environment plays an important role in shaping the effectiveness of student learning.

Abstract

The Braga area is one of the cultural heritage tourist destinations in Bandung with the attraction of its colonial architecture. The emergence of new buildings in the region is presented without giving attention to the surrounding colonial buildings. The visitor’s perspective on the Braga area is an important basis in regional growth and development. This study aims to find the perspective of visitors based on the correlation between their attraction and expectations of the Braga region. The method used in this study was mixed methods (qualitative-quantitative), and data collection was carried out using a survey through a freely distributed online questionnaire (snowball non-random sampling). The collected data is then analyzed qualitatively using content analysis and quantitatively using principal component analysis, factor analysis, and multivariate correlation analysis. The results of the study revealed the existence of two perspectives, namely appreciative and recreational. The appreciative perspective sees Braga as having an attractive heritage of historical buildings and hopes that Braga will become a conservation area. While the recreational perspective regards Braga as an entertainment area that is unique and hopes for the commodification of the Braga area.

Abstract

Public space is one of the important elements in a city to accommodate the citizen to do various things. However, it is not uncommon for public spaces to be ignored or unused by the community. Looking at this phenomenon, this study aims to look at the relationship between physical characteristics, activities, and sense of place of a public place. The research used qualitative methods in the first stage and quantitative methods in the second stage. The first stage explores the physical characteristics and activities in public spaces, as well as the user's perceived sense of place. The second stage reveals the correlational relationship between dimensions of physical characteristics, activities, and sense of place. From the results of the correlational analysis, it is revealed that the physical characteristics of the natural environment encourage a sense of meaningful place and encourage refreshing activities which also encourage a sense of meaningful place. In addition, productive activities are carried out by the physical character of the arts and kept away by the physical character of the social atmosphere and parking, as well as encouraging a sense of meaningful place. The physical character of the novelty encourages recreational activities and discourages socialization. In addition, the physical character of accessibility also encourages recreational and socialization activities. As for the physical character, many choices encourage socialization and consumptive activities which then create a sense of only knowing a space.

Abstract

The declining quality of the environment lately requires a change in human’s environmental value and behavior. This change can be achieved through environmental education in schools. Indonesia has recently promoted the Adiwiyata school program to encourage environmental education. This study aims to reveal the dimensions of value (NEP) and behavior (GEB) that occur in students at Adiwiyata school and explain the relationship between the two to evaluate the extent to which Adiwiyata's concepts can interfere with students' thought patterns and behavior. Through principal component analysis and factor analysis, six dimensions of student’s NEP were found in Adiwiyata Elementary School, respectively: "Destructive Interventions", "Conservative Interventions", "Exploitation of Nature", "Environmental Education", "Sustainable Environments", and "Environmental Insights". Besides, four dimensions of student’s GEB were found at Adiwiyata Elementary School, respectively: "Pro-Environmental Attitudes (Individual)", "Pro-Environmental Attitudes (Group)", "Waste of Natural Resources & Energy", and "Efficiency of Natural Resources & Energy". Furthermore, correlation analysis shows that these values and behavior tend to only be realized in the school environment.
