Abstract

Abstract This study is about the types of Speech acts used in Avatar movie script. The purpose of this study is to find out the types of speech acts base on George Yule’s theory and to find out which types are dominant in the script. The object of this study is a Avatar. This study analyzed the main character’s utterance. Jake Sully is the main character in Avatar movie. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative approach. They are five types of speech acts in Avatar movie script. They are declaratives acts are 3 items (0.85%), representatives acts are 176 items (50.28%), expressives acts are 48 items (13.71%), directives acts are 96 items (27.42%), and commissives acts are 27 items (7.71%). The data findings shown that representatives acts is dominantly used in this movie. There are 176 (50.28%) utterance that uttered by Jake Sully in Avatar movie script.   Keywords: pragmatics, speech acts, avatar

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with women’s language analysis on the main character in JaneAusten’s novel: Pride and Prejudice. The objectives of the study are to describe the types of women’s linguistics features on the main character in JaneAusten’s novel Pride and Prejudice, to derive women’s linguistics features on the main character in JaneAusten’s novel Pride and Prejudice, to reason women’s linguistics features on the main character in JaneAusten’s novel Pride and Prejudice. The research was conducted by descriptive qualitative. Thedata are the speech on the main character in JaneAusten’s novel, the data were collected from 1 novel, Pride and Prejudice that has women’s linguistics features.  The data were analyzed by identifying and classifying the figures of speech displaying the result in a table. Then these linguistics features are described in details. The analysis found that there are 9 types of women’s linguistics features which used: lexical hedges is amount 10,06%, tag question is 0,62%, rising intonation on declarative is 2,51%, empty adjective is 3,14%, precise color terms is 0%, intensifier is 56,60%, hyper correct grammar is 1,88%, super polite form is 0,62%, avoidance of swear word is 14,46%, and emphatic stress is 10,06%. The most dominant feature that used is intensifier and the lowest is precise color terms because it is not used in the data. Keywords: Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Women’s Language

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study deals with the types of maxims violation in The Hangover movie’s script used by the main characters. The objectives of study were to describe the violation of maxim, to describe the dominant type of maxim violation and to elaborate the reason for the maxim violation. The data were the dialogue of main characters in The Hangover movie. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative and limited on the main characters. The data analysis findingsshowthat there are 22 violation of maxim of quality, 2 violation of maxim of quantity, 9 violation of maxim of relation, and 8 violation of maxim of manner.The reason of the violations areto give the lack of  evidence, to lying to other speaker in hiding the truth, to save face the embarrassment, to present the strongest information, to represent what is in the speaker’s mind, or to trick audience or listener for making a joke or not. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focused on anaphoric reference used in Justin Bieber’s Album “Believe Acoustic”. The research conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected from the Justin Bieber’s album “Believe Acoustic”. The finding of the thesis show that there are 64 lines (sentence, phrase) that consist of 3 anaphoric reference which are anaphora (10), cataphora (6), and zero anaphora (48). The most dominant types is zero anaphora, which means the writer want to create an implicitly lyric and has a deep meaning as well.   Key words: anaphoric reference, album, lyric.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this article is to show through concrete examples about how figurative language used in notes. The notes texts were taken from The Year-End Record of Mata Najwa Talk Show. The central is to analyze the types of figurative language that used in Mata Najwa Talkshow’s notes, that contain Simile, Metaphor, Metonymy, Synecdoche, Personification, Hyperbole, Apostrophe, Allegory, Paradox, Understatement and Irony. 15 notes were taken as the data by using documentary technique and were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative technique. It was found that Irony is the dominant type used in the notes. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with Speech Function in Jokowi’s Speeches. The objectives of this study are to find out the types of Speech Function, the most dominant type of Speech Function used, and the meaning of the dominantly used. The research on this thesis was carried by using descriptive qualitative. The data were taken from 4 speeches of Jokowi in English. The data were analyzed and classified into four types of speech functions in the procedures namely Statement, Question, Offer, and Command. There are 116 speech functions from 4 speeches of Jokowi. The findings indicated thatthere are Statement 88 (75,86%), Question 11 (9,48%), Command 17 (14,66%), and there is no Offer in Jokowi’s Speeches (0%). Statement as the most dominant type of speech function is used in Jokowi’s speeches it’s mean give or state information, the way of the speaker to deliver the information about the Jakarta city’s problem and how to solve it, the speaker’s planning for Jakarta, and give thanks for the audience in Jakarta Anniversary to the audience by using statement.     Key words: Speech Function, Statement, Question, Offer, Command

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study deals with Repression and Displacement of Main Character in Elizabeth Gilbert’s Novel Eat, Pray, Love. The objectives of this study were to find out the causing of repression and the displacement in the novel. This study was limited to analyze Liz as the main character. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel Eat, Pray, Love. The findings indicated that Liz got repressions which are triggered by two factors; the crisis of self identity and marriage conflict. And then the displacement that occurred to the main character after getting repressions were losing faith about marriage, disorder eating habit, and converting new orientation of spiritual life.   Keyword        :  repression, displacement, character, novel
