Abstract

This paper aims to investigate how genre is used to help the translator analyze, understand, and translate feature articles from English to Indonesian and the differences in the convention of feature article in other languages. The genre approach is used to give a brief understanding in analyzing the feature article. In this research, the researchers use the ESP (English for Specific Purposes) which sees that genre has the consistency of communicative purpose. Moreover, this research uses parallel texts in the Indonesian version to compare with the English version to know the convention of feature article. The result shows that genre approach, especially ESP, helps the translator overcome the problems in translating feature articles since genre can show the convention, communicative purpose, formulaic expressions, dictions, discourse strategy, discourse community, and discourse markers of the texts. Thus, the translator can find proper translations to fit those criteria.

Abstract

The Covid-19 outbreak currently striking Indonesia has caused a lot of information spread across all lines of mass media, from television, radio, printed and online media. The negative and unpleasant information about this outbreak has a negative impact on a person's psychology. Therefore, researchers analyzed the news in the Jakarta Post and Channel News Asia about Covid-19 outbreak because this news became a hot topic throughout 2020 to early 2021. This research has been done using a transitivity analysis of the Systemic Functional Linguistics theory by Halliday (2014) that argues in creating meaning in grammar can be represented in metafunctions: ideational (field), interpersonal (tenor), and textual (mode). The research findings show that there are 3 processes that often arise, namely verbal, material and attributive relational process. In addition, 1 mental process was also found in this study. Then, the participans sayer – verbiage, and circumstance of time also dominate in the finding.

Abstract

This study deals with the translation of proper nouns found in Red Queen novel by Victoria Aveyard into Indonesian. It aimed to (1) analyze the types of proper nouns used in the novel, (2) investigate the translation techniques used in translating the proper nouns into Indonesian, and (3) reveal the translation techniques which were dominantly used in translating the proper nouns into Indonesian. This study utilized a descriptive qualitative approach. The data in forms of words and phrases were collected using documentation technique. Then, the data dealing with the types of proper nouns were analyzed using Newmark’s theory, while those dealing with the use of translation techniques were analyzed using Molina and Albir’s theory. The result showed that there were 185 data which were divided into two types of proper nouns, namely (1) people’s names, and (2) names of object. Meanwhile, there were 9 translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir used in translating the proper nouns, namely (1) amplification, (2) borrowing, (3) calque, (4) compensation, (5) discursive creation, (6) established equivalent, (7) linguistic amplification, (8) literal translation, and (9) reduction. Additionally, there were two dominant techniques used, namely borrowing and calque techniques.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating lecturer’s teachability upon students’ short story performance based on the database fitness of narrative writing. This study involved 245 undergraduate students aging between 18 to 23 years old (Mage = 20.65; SD = 1.603), from the parallel-intact-narrative writing. Students’ self-rated evaluation used five variables of transparency, accountability, fairness, and assistance in narrative writing instruction. Meanwhile, short story samples verified vocabulary, structure, mechanics, content, and organization. The findings showed lecturer’s teachability in the moderate category, for which the independent T-test results did not statistically show a significant difference between male and female students for perceiving lecturer’s teachability, and the MANOVA revealed lecturer’s teachability with F (16, 724.687), p = .044; Wilks’ Lambda = .894; and partial eta squared = .028, determined a differently statistical significance. The systematic analysis of language transcripts (SALT) indicated students’ short story samples with some experience of the syntactic structures and various categories upon the correlational results since the transcript length intelligibility, standard measures, and subordination index signified the database for supporting students’ short story performance.
