Abstract

Listening skill for English as Foreign Language learners is important to make the communication understood among the speakers and avoid misunderstanding. In teaching listening, teacher points that students find the difficulties to understand the words they hear because of lack of exposure to English words sounds and not familiar with the words sound (Cohen, 2007). To deal with this problem, teacher should starts to expose students to the new words in the intensive listening practice. Students learn to listen closely to the sounds, words and phrases. In this activity, teacher can introduce new vocabulary which is available in the text before the listening activity. In this activity, teacher raises student’s awareness on word stress. Word stress is when we pronounce a word based on the number of syllable which receives stress. The sound it produces can make rhythm which makes students familiar with the word.  Students can practice pronounce words; content words and function words before each listening activity. In pre-listening activity, word stress is introduced, students will be more aware of the words they will hear during listening process. The study emphasizes that integrating word stress in teaching listening can help students improve their listening ability and achieve comprehension.

Abstract

Using audio from CD provided by textbook is a conventional method for learning listening, where teacher played the audio recording providing by the textbook in the language lab. This method is limited in providing the natural language features spoken by a variety of English speakers. Recently, teaching listening has been developed using internet media. There are many English language teaching sources available on the internet which provide audio, videos, and podcast. For learning purpose, the audio is also accomplished by several activities and transcript. In this method, learners practice extensive listening followed by completing listening journals, records of students’ listening practice and self-evaluation.   This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of listening journal in helping students understand the overall meaning. The study has been conducted to the first year EFL university students during their dictation and reproduction lessons. Every week, students were required to do extra activities as homework. They are assigned to listen to several ELT sources on the internet. The results showed that most of the students found the method helped them to improve their vocabulary and understand the meaning from many different sources. Students relied on their listening ability and identify the weakness which needs improvement.This method appeared to be an effective listening teaching method since the students were exposed to English variety.

Abstract

Arranged marriages in Asia involve the consent and approval of family members. However, marriages that condone elopement are shared among the Sasak people in Lombok.  The elopement entails taking away the bride from her home without knowing her parents, close relatives, or other family members. As such, events that occur after discovering the elopement are the focus of this study. Post-elopement rituals are held to assuage both sides of the families, where the Pembayun (or adat leaders) are nominated to represent the families. The Pembayun were found to be bound by sociopragmatics in their use of politeness strategies. The analysis of sociopragmatics is based on the politeness theories of Brown and Levinson (1987). A qualitative approach that involved interviews and video recordings were used to collect data from participants and non-participant observation. The study revealed that sociopragmatics play a significant role in Pembayun’s choice of politeness strategies such as social distance, power distribution, rank, situational, and cultural parameters. These factors determine the weightiness of the act and become the basis for politeness strategies in the deliverances of specific acts during the post-elopement rituals.

Abstract

The implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (ACE) in the ASEAN countries also has several possible impacts on the increasing use of English in the ASEAN countries especially on teaching and learning English in education system. In addition, to identify the skills to fullfill the requirement to work across ASEAN. There is a need to identify the need for the current study on the situation of English in ASEAN during the AEC implementation with the systematic review analysis. This systematic review was guided by the PRISMA statement (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) in its systematic online database searching involving keyword searching, inclusion, and exclusion criteria. The results show the methods that have been used include qualitative, quantitative amd also mixed methods. In addition, five main themes are identified; English for ASEAN regionalism, English skills for working in ASEAN, English as lingua franca in ASEAN, English in the curriculum, and English in the education system. Based on this analysis the review identified the recommendation for English teaching.
