Abstract

This study aims at investigating and classifying the syntactical errors in the writing of report text made by 20 students of Department of English Literature of FIB-USU. Syntactical errors in writing made by EFL students are needed to be investigated by using the Error Analysis theory developed by Gass & Selinker in 2008 as it provides six appropriate investigation procedures, namely; collecting data, identifying errors, classifying errors, quantifying errors, analyzing errors and remediation.  Each of students was assigned to write a topic-based report text with the length of 150 up to 250 words in count. This study dealt with a qualitative descriptive approach. After the EA procedures applied, in this study found that the students made major syntactical errors within the use of article ‘a/an’,’ the’ in terms of omission and addition of articles, the use of relative pronoun, and the use of subject-verb agreement in terms of past tense agreement and number agreement. Based on the error analysis procedure applied, it was obtained that the most predominant syntactical errors made by the students was the use of article which comprises of 125 errors (50.2%), followed by the use of subject-verb agreement with 117 errors (47%) and followed by the use of relative pronoun as the least error which comprises of 7 errors (2.8%). The syntactical error made by the students caused by two major sources, intra-language error and intra-language error. By seeing at these problematic areas, the researcher has suggested to take out several related pedagogical remediation to the students.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of interruptions based on Ferguson’s theory in Beattie (1982) and the functions of interruptions based on Kennedy and Camden’s theory in Li (2001) in Suits Series Season 1. It was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method, while the data were all utterances taken from the Suits Series Season 1. The results showed that from four types of interruption, there was only one type unfound with 70 occurrences in total of interruptions found in Suits Series Season 1. Simple interruptions were used most in the series with 50 occurrences, followed by 18 occurrences of overlap interruptions, and 2 occurrences of butting-in interruptions, and no silent interruption found. The results also showed that there were six of seven functions of interruptions found in the research. The most found function was floor taking with 22 occurrences, followed by 13 occurrences of agreement, 12 occurrences of topic change, 10 occurrences of clarification, 9 occurrence of assistance, 4 occurrences of disagreement, and no tangentialization found. This means that the use of interruptions in characters’ utterances of Suits Series Season 1 mostly was to take the floor from the other speaker and propose another topic to discuss.

Abstract

This research is aimed at identifying the types and functions of figures of speech   in The New York Times selected headlines under the issue of Donald Trump and Joe Biden 1st Presidential Debating 2020. The study of Stylistic is employed since this research investigates language and style which can be seen in figurative language through figures of speech in the objects of study. This research is done by descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are taken from The New York Times official website. The data are the sentences referring to figures of speech. Inductive analysis method is used in the analysis of the data, then triangulation is used to establish the reliability of the data, so that it can enhance trustworthiness. The research results show six of twelve types of figures of speech are found based on Perrine’s theory, i.e. metaphor, simile, personification, symbol, paradox and overstatement/hyperbole. Each type of figure of speech has its particular function or functions. However, there are only two of four functions of figures of speech found based on Perrine’s theory, i.e. to add emotional intensity and to say much in a brief compass. Metaphor, simile, and overstatement/hyperbole carry both functions, adding emotional intensity to the readers and saying much in a brief compass.

Abstract

This research aims to determine and explain the types and the core constituents of Acehnese relative clauses which so far have not been thoroughly discussed. To collect data for this study, a direct elicitation technique is used, and the data is then analyzed through a qualitative descriptive technique. The results showed that the relative clauses in Acehnese were clauses embedded as modifiers of noun phrases. Similar to the relative clauses’ theory proposed by experts in the Acehnese, there are five types of relative clauses: relativization of subject, relativization of predicate, relativization of object, relativization of possessive, and relativization of noun. Relative clauses in Acehnese are formed by connecting core nouns and relative clauses through the connecting word ‘nyang’, except for the relative clause of the predicate element through the ellipsis of the predicate element. The basic structure of the Acehnese relative clauses is the arrangement of the main constituents preceding (postnominal) the relative clauses. The constituents that described the relative clauses could form words or phrases depending on the reference to the meaning of the relative clauses. In the Acehnese, the following elements do not exist: (1) relative clauses that can be reduced by adverbials such as in English, (2) relative pronouns as in German and relative particles such as in Chinese Mandarin; and (3) the attachment of relative suffixes to verbs as in Korean.

They are simple interruption (SI), overlap interruption (OI), Butting-in interruption (BI) and silent interruption (SLI). OI is the most dominant types of interruption found in the data. There are 9 occurrences of OI (36%), 8 occurrences of SI (32%), 5 occurrences of BI (20%) and 3 occurrences of SLI (12%).
