Abstract

This research was conducted to examine the use of interpersonal metadiscourse markers (IMDMs) in Steve Jobs’ oral business presentation using Hyland’s model. It further aimed to investigate the interpersonal metadiscourse categories and subcategories applied and most predominantly occurring in the type of oral business presentation. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this research. One and a half-hour of Steve Jobs’ keynotes at annual Macworld tradeshow on January 9th, 2007 were collected and analyzed. The results reveal that interactional subcategory; engagement markers are mostly used by Steve Jobs. Meanwhile, in interactive subcategory transition markers are dominantly used. It indicates that by using interpersonal metadiscourse markers, Steve Jobs expresses his idea, supports his argument, and convinces the audiences by establishing a relationship with them. This research also argues that metadiscourse theory facilitates an involvement between the speaker and the listener and provides a way for mutual comprehension. Thus, the findings have a pivotal implication on how IMDMs might improve the field related to communication skills in professional life or business.

Abstract

AbstractThe learner’s syntactical error analyses have long been interested in the second and foreign language researchers. This study aimed at investigating the syntactical error types, the form of error, and the frequencies of these errors that occurred in the sixth-semester student presentation on the conversation class at the English Literature Study Program in Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. To achieve the objectives, the data were collected from the learner’s transcribed speech. The sampling of non-probability was used to select the classroom and participant’s characteristics. These data were collected by video recording, non- participant observation techniques, and documents. To classify the learner’s syntactical errors, Politzer Ramirez’s (1973) syntactical errors taxonomy was adopted. Further, the qualitative method was applied in this study. Based on the result of the analysis, there were 64 syntactical errors uttered by the learner. The results of the analysis were then categorized into three forms: phrases, clauses, and sentences. The results of this study showed that the learner often made the syntactical error in the form of sentences. That was 32 errors (50%). Furthermore, the study found that the amount of confusion was the most commonly uttered as the type of error (26,56%). The learner often got confused to make the right use between the number and the subject mentioned. Thus, the findings indicated that even though the learner considered as the best; yet the learner still possibly made some errors. Therefore, lecturers or instructors should raise the students’ syntactical error awareness. So that it could improve the student’ speaking skills in their level of English.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the questioning strategies used by lecturers in English literature lectures an Indonesian university and how they were manifested. Applying the qualitative approach and Rido, Ibrahim, and Nambiar’s conceptual framework in 2015, the research analyzed three lectures of English literature consisting of prose, literary criticism, and drama. Data were collected through 300 minutes of video-recordings. The findings reveal that the lecturers employ various types of questions such as display, referential, follow-up, and rhetorical questions. The lecturers manifest the questions by rephrasing questions first, then nominating students, asking questions to the entire class, encouraging students to initiate questions, and moving closer to students when asking questions. The questioning strategies help the lecturers to lead the discussion, check students’ understanding, offer the students to share ideas, and improve students’ participation. As a result, the students become active in expressing thoughts, sharing ideas, and even initiating questions. The research can be a guideline for lecturers to create meaningful and interactive lectures to produce competent and critical students.

Abstract

Interaction management strategies are increasingly set to become a vital factor in fostering active participants in university lectures. Following Rido, Ibrahim & Nambiar’s (2015) framework, this study investigated interaction management strategies used in English literature lectures in a university setting in Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative method and the data were gathered through video recordings. The findings showed that all literature lecturers employed three kinds of interaction management strategies such as code strategies, emotional strategies, and managing strategies. In code strategies, the lecturers used English during the entire class for clarity in opening, explanation, example, and closing. Meanwhile, in emotional strategies, the lecturers shared common strategies namely using non-verbal gestures and using humours or jokes in order to invite participation, to increase student’s motivation, and to create conducive learning environment. Then, in terms of managing strategies, the lecturers decided topic, controlled or switched the topic of discussion, decided who speaks, gave direction or commanded the students, gave extended wait time, and offered opportunity for student to speak in order to enable the students express their ideas and engage with the lectures. It is hoped that insights gleamed from this study will assist such lecturers to successfully manage their lectures and navigate the distribution of participation as well as content of the lesson.

Abstract

This study was an attempt to investigate the consecutive interpreting strategies used by an Indonesian interpreter, Yuliana Tansil, in the court setting. This study examined a trial court in English and consecutively interpreted it to Indonesian. Faerch and Kasper’s (1983) theory of consecutive interpreting strategy was used. The descriptive qualitative method was applied as the method of this study. Data were collected through video recording taken from official YouTube. The video then was transcribed carefully. The results showed that the interpreter used two types of consecutive interpreting strategies, namely reduction strategies, and achievement strategies. In terms of reduction strategy, the interpreter applied skipping, incomplete sentence, and filtering. Yet, the message abandonment was not found in this study. In terms of achievement strategies, the interpreter used both appeal for assistance and elaborate strategy. The results also indicated that the interpreter frequently elaborated and expanded the lexical meaning of words or phrases in the utterances. The interpreter used this strategy when she faced the difficult words in long utterances because of some cultural nuance. So, she elaborated on her understanding of the message by adding more information as a way of making the utterance in the target language to be understood better.

Abstract

This study was an attempt to investigate types and functions of repair strategies used by lecturers in English literature lectures in a university in Indonesia. Rido’s conceptual framework of repair strategies (2018) was used. Qualitative method was applied while the data were collected through video recording of three English literature lectures, comprising prose, drama, and literary criticism. The findings showed that the lecturers repaired both the linguistic (grammatical and pronunciation errors) and content-related aspects of the students while they were giving oral responses and making presentations. Therefore, the lecturers employed four types of repair strategies such as indicating an error has been made and correcting it, asking students to make self-repairs, indicating an error has been made and getting other students to correct it, and repeating students’ responses with changes. The functions of those repair strategies were to show the lecturers as role model and reliable source of knowledge, to give good examples, to make students think critically, to give opportunity for students to share ideas, and make students not aware they were being corrected so that they kept learning. The findings offer some implications for pedagogical considerations within university lecture, especially in English as a foreign language (EFL) setting.
