Abstract

In 1980s, the development of Islam in Indonesia was characterized by “intellectual boom” as a great result of success of some Indonesian young Muslim intellectuals who accomplished their study abroad. This phenomenon has been a positive sign for the development of Islam in Indonesia as world’s largest Muslim country. One of the expected contribution of Indonesian Islam is the development of Islamic thought. One of Muslim intellectuals who had tried to respond to this expectation was Kuntowijoyo. Kuntowijoyo had produced many works in various fields, in addition to history which becomes the major of his field studies. One important thought of Kuntowijoyo’s intellectual legacies that should be appreciated and reconstructed is the idea of Prophetic Social Sciences (ISP). This article attempts to reconstruct and elaborate the ISP, which has been initiated by Kuntowijoyo, into Prophetic Sociology. In doing so, the writer refers to Kuntowijoyo’s works and other relevant sources to the issue. Keywords: prophetic social sciences, prophetic sociology.

Abstract

Muhammadiyah strives to make a positive contribution to the progress of Indonesia. In the first century of the advent, this organization focused on advancing education, health, and compensation to the du‘af?’. Meanwhile, it issued an important point, which emphasized the minority groups through the 47th Congress in Makassar held in 2015. Hence, this article examines several issues concerning the views that underlie young Muhammadiyah intellectuals in voicing partiality towards the religious minority. It also analyzes the role or form of alignments and the implications of these views on thought upheavals within Muhammadiyah internally and nationally. The study discovered that the young intellectuals play a pivotal role in fighting for the basic rights of the religious minority, which continues to face the complicated problem of citizenship. Subsequently, this data has been focused on advocacy and intellectual works, including a literature review of attitude statements, published books, journals, research reports, and opinions in the national mainstream and alternative media.

Abstract

AbstractAll stages of Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) movement essentially lead to the most important stage, the Islamic law application. One of the strategic areas of HT is education. HT suggests that education should serve as a target for the Islamic law application, because as an institution related to the intent of people, it suffers from many weaknesses. HT highlight on education is directed to the paradigm on which the implementation of education system in where formal institutions is based. Weaknesses and crisis in education in the view of HT are rooted from the implemented paradigm. The paradigm meant by HT is the material-secular patterned educational paradigm. This paradigm is considered by HT to have caused the biggest crisis in education, which is the failure of education to produce humans who truly obsess a higher piety. This paper is intended to present the construction of Islamic education in the view of HT.

In the curriculum of the higher education of Muhammadiyah there is a provision that AIK is a compulsory subject, a kind of Islamic religious education must be given in public higher education. However, AIK has a weight of credits and hours of study which is greater than the Islamic religious education at public higher education, which weighs 2 credits and given only one time in one semester, while AIK has a weight of 4-8 credits are given for four semesters. Taking into account the position of the AIK, this paper want elaborate AIK as the praxis of value education.

Abstract

This article focuses on the study of non-Muslim leadership, which is mentioned in several verses in the Qur'an and often triggers debates in the public sphere, especially at the moment of electoral politics in Indonesia. Because the discussion about this often uses verses from the Qur'an as justification, it is interesting to examine the views of the commentators in Indonesia, which is focused on Surah Al-Maidah verse 51. To explore the views of the two commentators, this study uses library research by comparing (comparative analysis) between Tafsir Al-Azhar and Tafsir Al-Misbah. The study of the opinions of the two commentators finds out that the political positions of non-Muslims as leaders for Muslims have two different views. First, not. Second, the prohibition is to make non-Muslims as auliya' then Shihab explains the position of non-Muslims in three parts, one of which is that a non-Muslim who lives in peace with Muslims has the same rights and obligations as Muslims, as well as the right to be a leader.

Abstract

In Indonesian national system of education, Islamic religious education is compulsory for all levels of formal education. Taking into account such a position, Islamic religious education is potentially strategic in responding to some of the main issues in religious life. One issue examined in this paper is radicalism that continues to overshadow the dynamics of religious life in In- donesia. Although numerous attempts (mainly security approach) to eradi- cate radicalism have been taken, radicalism is still a prominent problem in Indonesia. This paper argues that Islamic religious education should be em- powered in order to reduce the spread of radicalism. In order to bring these ideas into reality, this paper further offers Living Values E education (LVE) as a theoretical framework to develop Islamic religious education which is com- patible with this goal.

Abstract

This article aims at diagnosing the development of Ummah while Muslims are living as minority in Australia. Through a sociological approach, qualitatively, some issues considered in understanding the development are practices of secularism, multiculturalism and protection of human rights. This academic framework in comprehending the development might be claimed as a new trajectory of sociological exploration. Accordingly, this study is proposed to become a preliminary research on Muslims’ freedom of religion living in secular country. This article finds that Australia is a state that consistently has protected its citizens’ freedom of religion and the Australian government, in dealing with social and religious issues, and law enforcement, has worked professionally. However, Muslims have faced challenging realities of cases of discrimination coming from fundamentalist Christians. The cases, indeed, can be mitigated through inter-religious dialogue and cooperation. This article argues that, so far, the development of Ummah in the country has been running well. Under the protection of a secular state, minority Muslims in Australian multicultural societies can enjoy their freedom of religion. Practices of inter-religious tolerance are stronger than the tensions and conflicts have happened..

Abstract

This article attempts to uncover the point of encounter of human rights and sharī'ah in Indonesia which often contradict with each other in light of differences in its development base, both as a concept and, furthermore, as an instrument, which ultimately leads to the human dimension. The basis of the development in question is that human rights derived from human rationality, while sharī'ah comes from revelation. Therefore, this article seeks to explore the compatibility between the two. Human rights and sharī'ah always have a point of encounter because in principle they are both fighting for humanity. The intersection between the two is often the case--and it becomes common because the basis for the development of the law originates from different sources. Human rights comes from human rationality, while sharī'ah departs from Allah's revelation. Thus, it is only natural that various debates arise as in general a discourse of knowledge. It's just that it needs to be understood that the conflict and tension that arise, should not lead to violence. On the one hand, Muslim groups who reject the principles of human rights are undoubtedly existent. However, on the other hand, many Muslims also graciously accept human rights. Accommodative people hold the view that they have a common vision of justice, peace, equality, and tolerance. Human rights need not be viewed as contradictory to Islam, in part because many Muslim-majority countries recognize and ratify human rights instruments issued by the United Nations.
