Abstract

Wahhabism is an Islamic ideological school attributed to a Muslim scholar named Muḥammad b. ‘Abd al-Wahhāb of Najd. ‘Abd al-Wahhāb has carried out religious preaching to promulgate his ideas into a number of regions within the Arabic Peninsula, aiming at also spreading them throughout the world. In doing so, he has been supported by political and military power provided by an Amīr named Muḥammad b. Sa‘ud. ‘Abd al-Wahhāb’s da‘wah sought to invite Muslims to purify their faith and promote Islamic revivalism (Islamic orthodoxy). Employing Michel Foucault’s “theory of genealogy”, this article attempts to look at the relational bond of knowledge and power. The historical analysis finds genealogy within ‘Abd al-Wahhab’s knowledge along with the earlier network of Ḥanbalī’s authorities in Damascus through the ijāzah he accepted from his teachers. Ijāzah is a symbol of the legitimacy of enthusiasm in Islamic scientific genealogy. The associations between religion and politics have been another important factor in the success of the Wahhabi movement.

Abstract

This paper explains the philanthropic phenomenon that occurred in Indonesian people, especially the people of Cirebon City when the transmission of the covid-19 virus reached it’s peak again in November 2020. Basically, the philanthropic movement in the Covid-19 pandemic era emerged based on chaotic humanitarian attention and the uncertain economic stability of the country. This provides a stimulus to philanthropic activists to participate in social-humanitarian concerns and social-economic restoration. This type of research is qualitative with interview methods and online media documentation. This study concludes that the philanthropic movement should be based on humanitarian solidarity and religious normativity. However, several philanthropic activists in Cirebon City have used the opportunity of the COVID-19 pandemic moment as a personal economic recovery by using accurate marketing management wrapped in social philanthropy. This is a new motive that combines the humanitarian philanthropy movement with a marketing work system when COVID-19 as a natural disaster strikes with the aim of helping people as well as marketing their commodity products. The reason is that the demands for economic improvement during a pandemic require philanthropic activists to give and share as well as sell and promote.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (Pesantren) as genuine Islamic education institutions from Indonesia have a very important role in improving the quality of human resources in accordance with Indonesian national goals to educate the Indonesian people. The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia has a policy focused on empowering and improving the quality of students of Islamic Boardings (Santri), especially in the academic field. The policy is the awarding of scholarships to outstanding students or commonly referred to as the Achievement Santri Scholarship Program (PBSB) to be able to continue their studies at favourite universities in Indonesia. However, the implementation of the policy certainly faces obstacles so that it needs an evaluation study for the achievement of the program according to its objectives. This article tries to analyze the existing policy analysis model in the Achieving Santri Scholarship Program with a six-stage model developed by Newton and Van Deth. The findings are that the program could not be separated from the outcome problems and feedback from the policy so that there are scholarship recipients who have not been able to maximize the service to the pesantren both in terms of administration and social environment.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the position and role of Indonesian Women's Ulama in responding to the social problems of women in the patriarchal culture of Ulamā’ which is dominated by male Ulamā’ in Indonesia. Using Peter L.Berger and Luckmann's (1966) social construction theory, this paper seeks to explore the capacity of Indonesian Women’s Ulama in solving socio-religious problems, especially in the field of female law and social issues in Indonesia. Law-making in Indonesia cannot be separated from the patriarchal construction built by the intellectual hegemony of male Ulamā’ (Islamic scholars) and the existence of social inequality between men and women in the dominance of social interpretations which results in the dominance of masculinity in the public sector. This paper uses qualitative research methods with data collection techniques in the form of observation and documentation. The conclusions of this paper are 1) the intellectual ahistorism of women socially constructed through verbalization, visualization, and adaptation in the socio-cultural scientific tradition; 2) the cultural backwardness experienced by women when men step forward in their socio-cultural intellect in the public sector such as law, education, politics and economics.
