Abstract

After the fall of the World Trade Center (WTC), radicalism has become a religious phenomenon around the world. Uniquely, the Muslims are accused of being perpetrators of such horrible terror. However, it has been unconsciously admitted that the acts and behaviors shown by the Muslims around the world, with special reference to the North Sumatera as the locus of this research, seem to ‘justify’ such accusation. First of all, the acts and behaviors have been started by the feeling of ‘pride’ and ‘happiness’ with the fall of “the twin towers” as the symbol of the USA’s supremacy. The feelings are subsequently coupled by animosity toward the USA and its allies. Such fiery hatred makes the Muslims unable to objectively identify triggering factors behind the emergence of religious radicalism, which, in fact, does not merely exist among the Muslim community but also in every religious community, especially among the Jews and Christians. Regardless of this religious phenomenon, I would argue that there must be another suspicious indicator behind the rise of religious radicalism called ‘destructive theology’. Theology believes that God will be present when humans fight and kill each other. Destruction and burning of worship houses in the North Sumatera are among obvious examples of such theology.

Abstract

This article seeks to reveal differences of religious attitudes between Muslim and Christian communities in North Sumatera and Frankfurt Am Main Germany. This article shows that the relation between Muslims and Christians can be understood to have taken place in two categories, positive and negative. Positive relation can be attested through integrating factors between the two religious communities, while negative relation can be attested through separating factors. In North Sumatera there exist local wisdoms which serve as adhesive factors of Muslim-Christian relation, such as the concept of ?marga? among Batakese society. Meanwhile, pig either as food or as pet is regarded as a dividing factor together with fanaticism and exclusivism. In Germany, as majority group the Christians are tolerant towards Muslims due to the rule of law in the country. This tolerance becomes an adhesive factor, while mutual suspicion among both Muslims and Christians is raeagrded as dividing factor.

Abstract

Rohingya refugees who are experiencing a crisis due to the genocide in Myanmar have attracted international attention. The existence of the Rohinghya as an ethno-religious minority group was officially discriminated against which led to forced expulsion by the Myanmar government in 1982 with the issuance of the citizenship law which stated that Rohingya citizenship was denied or not recognized as one of the official ethnicities in Myanmar. So, the Rohingya were forced to flee their country to other countries, including Indonesia. This paper aims to determine the dynamics of Rohingya Muslims while in Indonesia. Using qualitative research methods by conducting observations, interviews and data analysis. The results of this study indicate that the Rohingya ethnicity in Indonesia as stateless (without citizenship) undergoes a process of acculturation, marriage with local Indonesian citizens (WNI), and developing survival strategies because some have lived in Indonesia for more than eight years. In conclusion, the Rohingya ethnicity while in Indonesia experienced conditions of uncertainty in their lives because they did not have citizenship status and hoped to be sent to a third country by UNHCR. Indonesian people accept Rohingya Muslims to stay in Indonesia temporarily because there is a common Islamic identity and in the name of humanity.

In addition, the church built by Christians in predominantly Muslim neighborhoods also tend to lead to conflict, and this conflict usually driven by outsiders’ provocative statement. Additionally, the pig farm is also a crush barrier that destabilizes social interaction between Muslim and Christian in these settlements.

Studies on immigrant groups in Indonesia have been increasingly carried out by academics since the arrival of refugees from conflict areas to Indonesia as a transit point to a country that is responsive to immigrants. One of the issues of his study is the Rohingya Muslims. As refugees with Islamic religious identities, their existence is interesting to examine from the perspective of religious communities around the refuge. This study was conducted in the Aceh, Medan, and Makassar regions as the places most visited by Rohingya Muslim groups. This research uses a qualitative approach with case studies. This is intended to be able to map how the response of religious communities to the existence of Rohingya Muslims. The main finding is that the existence of Rohingya Muslims in the three regions has different responses given by various people around them. The cultural basis and religious relations are decisive. In Aceh, strong religious relations resulted in a different response for Rohingya Muslims compared to those in Medan and Makassar, whose backgrounds were more diverse. The location of the comparison is that in Aceh the response based on ukhuwah Islamiyah is more dominant, while in Medan and Makassar the humanitarian response and a firm line of state identity are important signs in responding to the existence of Rohingya Muslims. Abstract
