Abstract

Abstract

Gastropods are known to have a wide distribution. They can live in a variety of habitats and influenced by various environmental factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity of gastropods and its relationship with the physical and chemical environment of a water. This research was an ecological research with correlational descriptive type. The selection of Marsegu Island was based on the fact that the area is a conservation area, both the forest and sea are frequently visited by tourists. The results of this research showed that there were 22 species of gastropod found in the water of Marsegu Island. The most commonly found was from the genus of Cypraea (5 species). Gastropods found mostly from the family of Strombidae which consisted of 4 genera i.e. Lambis, Canarium, Strombus and Lentigo. The value of gastropod diversity in the three research stations was moderate, 2.93, 2.91 and 2.95 respectively. In addition, there is a correlation between environmental factors and the diversity of gastropods. The simultaneous effect of the independent variables toward the dependent variables can be explained by the magnitude of the determination coefficient (R Square) which was 0528 or 52.8%. Result of this study confirms that the environmental factors greatly affects the diversity of Gastropod in the coastal waters of Marsegu island. The results can provide benefits as control over fishing and coastal pollution due to human activities.

Abstract

People’s activity in water area has made this area as waste place from a variety of human’s activity. One contaminant thrown to the seaboard is heavy metal, specifically for cadmium (Cd). Naturally, the pollution sources of heavy metal Cd in water area are coming from geological process and some of human’s activity (antropogenic). The effect of Cd’s contamination to invertebrate water are died effect and ecology’s unbalancing of sea organism varieties. It is because Cd cannot be broken up (non degradable) by living organism and it can be accumulated to the environment. One effort to tackling heavy metal Cd contamination in water is doing biomonitoring accumulation as assessment instrument of water quality.Key words: biomonitoring, biomoitoring accumulation, heavy metal Cadmium, invertebrate water

Abstract

Deadema setosum are sea urchins which are very sensitive to heavy metal pollutants. In this research, the observation of behavioral responses namely the behavior of moving and resting Deadema setosumare conducted. They are caused by exposure of different heavy metals Cd at 4 agurium tanks for 4 weeks. Analysis of levels of heavy metals Cd that accumulates in the gonad and intestine Deadema setosum using Atomic Absorbsion Spectrofotometer (AAS). The observations shows responses of switching behavior and resting Deadema setosum that fluctuats during 4 weeks of observation. In addition, behavioral end point’s observations about the losing of spines is not observed during these 4 weeks. The content levels of Cd which accumulates in the intestine and the gonads increase from the first tank (lowest value) to the fourth tank (the highest), the result show that tanks 1 <2 <3 <4. The results of these observations indicate that the behavior of moving and resting Deadema setosum influenced by heavy metal concentrations of Cd that accumulates in the body of Deadema setosumwhich occurs through a process of absorption.
