Abstract

Abstract

The community engagement activity is specifically designed to discover the impact of “The Snake” and “The Eagle” method in enhancing the teachers’ competence in English language teaching and learning. Contextually, the teaching method is closely related to the achievement of the goals of the teaching itself. Considering the importance of teaching approach, designing the class activities remains essential. This approach is considered to be simple and easy to internalize English learning materials such as new vocabularies and tenses, past tense for example. Therefore, the current research aims to discover how the implemented approach carries influencing outcomes to learning English. This activity engaged a number of English teachers in Pangongsean, Patapan, Bringin Nunggal villages in Torjun Sub-District, Sampang District. To reveal its impacts, we invited the English teachers in the given areas to engage in this practice so as to they are well informed about this teaching method. We also invited some students to have direct practices after the method insights given. Later, we did interview with English teachers to get to know how the teaching method would be useful in their context. Research shows that the method remains both useful and applicative for English teachers’ competence in teaching English. The other sides of the current research are the challenges faced. The students’ lack of vocabularies and low level of their motivation are problematic. In addition, having more time to practice the method is required so that we can give more room to both teachers and students to have more fun learning by using “Si Ular” dan “Si Elang” method in learning English.

Abstract

The current research aims to scrutinize the generality and idiosyncrasy of verb formation mirrorred in Madurese language. The language has been easily understood and intuitively acknowledged for native speakers. Since the (ir)regularity, changing a word in shapes and functions, also demonstrates its linguistic facet, the approach from morphological explanation becomes crucial. This is to provide background information for those especially interesting in learning the language and or simply making even the native speakers aware of. Furthermore, it would be beneficial in a way that the proper uses both syntactically and semantically are appropriate. This employed the explanatory research, collecting the data from WA (WhatsApp) group. All members are indigenous of Madura and thus the group facilitates the extensive use of the given language. By identifying, capturing and classifying the required data, they were subsequently analyzed from the proposing morphological underpinnings. The findings of this research demonstrate that prefix a- and –e are considered to be bound morphemes as they cannot stand alone. They function to form a verb in active voice and a verb in passive voice. The generality takes place. The idiosyncrasy is, however, also phenomenal.

Abstract

YouTube Kids mediate learning. Their presence offers various audio-visual recorded objects especially targeted children. The biggest concern about the current research is how the selected videos can positively impact children's development. There are three main issues that would be discussed in this context: the level of children’s concentration, intelligence, and language. This study employs an experimental research approach: two children were engaged in the given activities but were given distinctive treatment. Rara, the first participant, was exposed toYouTube Kids, while Nayla, the rest of the participants, was not. The YouTube programs introduced to the first kid were Baby John from Little Angle channel and Play Doh. To test the three cognitive dimensions, we gave participants the same distractions, the same questions, and the same chance to participate in the exchange. The finding remarkably demonstrates that the children show different outcomes in relation to three cognitive dimensions: Rara, with a treatment, tends to have a high concentration, be responsive to the given questions, and have more various vocabularies. Nayla, in contrast, goes in a different direction. It indicates thatYouTube Kids facilitate children to develop cognitively.

Abstract

This research aims to study the locals’ perceptions towards English in association with the local tourism destination development. Since language and tourism are interwoven, the use of language is linked to the likelihood of its popularity or infamy. It is undeniable that Indonesia requires English in all tourism sectors. The problem is that Indonesian's English proficiency in general is still in the lowest position among the members of the MEA. This has become one of the obstacles to make local tourism sites more competitive in the international sphere. Recognizing the communities’ perceptions to English would be a meaningful step to advance the potentials of the local tourism destination. Therefore, two issues that this research is concerned about are: the locals’ perceptions and the problems that might pose if English were introduced. The descriptive qualitative method employed. This research is located in Langgher Dhatang, Dusun Pogag, Desa Palalang, Kec. Pakong, Kab. Pamekasan, Madura. We interviewed thirteen local people living around the location. The participants’ involvement decision was made based on the assumption that they will have a direct impact for its language planning. We designed a questionnaire in a Google Form to ask and marked the answers in accordance with the participants’ responses. The research shows various attitudes towards English: most of them (76,9%) believe that English is important for Langgher Dhatang. 15,4% of the participants who have no idea either English will have a positive impact or not for local tourism development. The rest (7,7%) sees that English is inconsequential to its promotion. The problems that could arise include a low level of motivation in learning (15,4%), a low level of education (69,2%), and the youth ignorance in tourism site development (7,7%).
