Abstract

Pristolepis grooti (Anabantidae) is a freshwater fish that commonly present in the flooded swamp area along the river and also in the dam. This fish has relatively low economical value, but it is protein source for villagers. Information on biological aspects, including the type of food consumed by the fish is rare. To understand the stomach content of the fish, a study has been conducted from February to April 2015. The fish was sampled from the swamp area in the Bencah Kelubi Village and from the Koto Panjang Dam, 6 times, once/ week. The stomach content of the fish was then identified and the Preponderance Index (Natarajan and Jhingran, 1961) was calculated. Results shown that the main food of fish from those sampling sites are different. The main food of the Koto Panjang fish was fish feed pellets remains (PI 56.53%) , while that of the swamp fish was insects (98.67%). Data obtained from this research shown that P. grooti is able to consume many types of food available.Keyword :Pristolepis grooti, Koto Panjang dam, Bencah Kelubi, stomach content, fish feed pellet.

Abstract

Helostoma temmincki is a type of fish that inhabit swamp area in Riau. A study aims to understand the stomach content and its relation with size, sex and level of maturity of that fish has been conducted on February to May 2015. Fish samples were captured using gill nets, fish trap and line fishing. Stomach content of the fish was analyzed and it was used as a basis to calculate the Preponderance Index (PI).Total, there were 104 fishes captured, but 27 of them had empty stomach and could not be used for stomach content analysis. The number of fish analysed was 77. Parameters measured were Index of Preponderance (IP), type of food, total length, sex and gonad maturity level. Results shown that the main food of the fish is Bacillariophyceae (45,32%). The small fishes (61-86 mm TL) consume phytoplankton, while the big fish (90-165 mm TL) consume phytoplankton and zooplankton. The male and female’s stomach content was almost the same. Fish with relatively low maturity level eat mainly on phytoplankton, while mature fish consume phytoplankton and zooplankton. Based on data obtained, it can be concluded that the food of H. temmincki was various, and it is related to body size and gonad maturity level.Keyword: Helostoma temmincki, Swamp, Stomach Content Analysis, Index of Preponderance

Abstract

Trichogaster pectoralis is a root grazer fish and it may be used to control the population of aquatic weeds such as Pistia stratiotes. To understand the ability of the fish in controlling the weed, a laboratory scaled research has been conducted from May-June 2016. There were 5 treatments applied, namely ±25 (Bm25), ±50 (Bm50), ±75 grams fish (Bm75) that were reared in 16 liter tank completed with ±50 grams P. stratiotes. As controls, ±50 grams weed was reared in tank without any fish (Kk50) and ±50 grams fish (Ki50) was reared in tank without weed. Results shown that T. pectoralis was able to control P. stratiotes population. Each treatment speed up the decrement of P. stratiotes population, but the best result was shown by Bm75. In this treatment, the population of P. stratiotes reduced into 2.7 grams by the 28th day. Keywords: Tricogaster pectoralis, Pistia stratiotes, weed control, root grazer
