Abstract

This study was to develop a Scrapbook to introduce Alphabet for preschool learners. This research involved the teachers in Darul Uloom Kindergarten Pontianak Kota. The method of this research was development research which consists of three phases of ADDIE (analyze, design, and develop). The product is to introduce the Alphabet in an interesting and attractive way for preschool learners. The need analysis obtained the information of what the teacher and students need in teaching and learning the Alphabet by identifying the analysis of the teacher and the students' condition. The design of the Scrapbook focused on the criteria of the appropriate material, selecting the suitable decorations, and using the appropriate pictures and details in designing Scrapbook. The Construction of Scrapbook contains of 26 letter names and letter sounds. The model of Scrapbook is using a hard cover album, which consists of 26 letters and its phonetics as the main material. The product was also designed with the appropriate layouts, such as paper size, pictures' management (cropping and resizing), colors, shapes, and fonts in order to produce the product with the suitable standard of printing. The development of Scrapbook described what the constructs of the product were, including the fonts of the Alphabet, layout designs, contents, and teachers' validation. The result is the complete product of Scrapbook considered as very good and feasible to be used as a teaching and learning media to introduce Alphabet for preschool learners.

Abstract

This research aimed to validate the authenticity and usefulness of Irregular Verb Game as a teaching tool in learning past tense irregular verbs in English language class. This research involved an English teacher and students of grade eight at SMPN 3 Salatiga, Kabupaten Sambas. The research method was development which consists of three phases: analyzing, designing, and developing. For the analysis phase, the researcher used interview sheets to obtain the data that highlights teacher and students’ needs in teaching and learning. The design phase focused on designing the contents and layout of the product. The development phase generated the product, tried it out, and got teacher’s validation by using assessment rubric. The first part of the result of this research was a complete design of the product. The layout of the design had 3 main parts: intro, inside house, and outside house. The contents included a visual dictionary, pronunciation function, and simple quizzes. The second part of the result was the teacher’s validation for the product. The percentage of teachers’ validation for the product’s effectiveness was 94.44%. Based on this data, the researchers ensured that Irregular Verb Game can be used as a teaching tool to teach irregular verbs in the form of past tense for eighth grade students of Junior High School.

Abstract

Salah satu tuntutan terhadap para guru diera revolusi industri 4.0 saat ini adalah kemampuan serta keterampilan mereka dalam mengembangkan media pembelajaran berbasis teknologi. Hal ini tentunya membutuhkan keterampilan teknis tertentu disamping penguasaan pedagogi dalam menerapkan media pembelajaran tersebut bagi peserta didik, khususnya di mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Sayangnya, para guru di daerah-daerah di Kalimantan Barat, termasuk di Desa Sandai, Kabupaten Ketapang, belum memiliki keterampilan yang memadai untuk mengembangkan media pembelajaran seperti yang diharapkan, Jarak lokasi bertugas yang cukup jauh dari ibukota propinsi menjadi penyebab utama kurangnya akses para guru tersebut terhadap pelatihan maupun lokakarya pembuatan media pembelajaran yang dibutuhkan. Untuk itulah, dosen-dosen tim Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura menyelenggarakan pelatihan pembuatan media pembelajaran berbasis teknologi ini. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan dalam bentuk lokakarya selama dua hari yang berisi pemberian materi serta latihan pembuatan media pembelajaran menggunakan aplikasi Hot Potatoes dan Kahoot!. Dari hasil pengamatan pelaksanaan dan produk yang dihasilkan dalam kegiatan PKM ini, guru-guru SMP dan SMA sederajat di Desa Sandai sangat bersemangat memahami materi yang diberikan juga dalam mengembangkan media yang dilatihkan kepada mereka. Para guru mengungkapkan bahwa pelatihan ini sangat bermanfaat bagi mereka karena membantu mengembangkan media dengan aplikasi yang selama ini belum mereka ketahui. Namun, evaluasi kegiatan PKM ini juga menunjukkan bahwa para guru di daerah tersebut masih sangat membutuhkan lebih banyak lagi pelatihan pemanfaatan teknologi dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris khususnya untuk dapat berkembang secara signifikan.

Abstract

Artikel yang dipublikasikan ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan hasil kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Topik yang diangkat adalah pengintegrasian TPACK dan TALULAR dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris pada masa pandemi. Program ini diselenggarakan oleh Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dan MGMP Bahasa Inggris di kota Singkawang. Peserta yang mengikuti kegiatan PKM adalah guru-guru SMP se-Kota Pontianak, Kalimantan Barat. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa guru -guru peserta PKM telah berhasil mendesain atau membuat Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran yang inovatif dengan mengintegrasikan pendekatan TPACK dan TALULAR pada proses belajar mengajar. RPP tersebut juga merupakan produk dan bukti keberhasilan program PKM yang telah dilaksanakan.

Abstract

This research was conducted to develop supplementary materials to support writing on descriptive text in companion to the English textbook for Seventh Grade. This research is qualitative based, and the method adopted is by development research. The researcher used the ADDIE model as the model of development of this research. However, due to time limitations to accomplish all steps, this research only implemented three phases: analyzing, designing, and developing (ADD). This research used the semi-structured interview as the data collection technique and an interview guideline as the tool of data collection. The data of the analyzing step of this research were analyzed using the thematic analysis technique. The participant of this research was an English teacher of SMP Kemala Bhayangkari Kubu Raya. The product was developed using Ispring Quizmaker. During the process of Designing and Developing, the researcher evaluated the product of this research using the criteria of good materials by Bugler et al. (2017). In conclusion, the development of supplementary material for descriptive text writing (SEASON) as the product of this research has met the criteria of good materials.

Abstract

Feedback is one of the important components in the teaching and learning process. Feedback given by the teacher can make the teaching and learning process more effective. The teacher can optimize the learning process by giving feedback so students can understand the material better. Feedback can make students know their weaknesses and strengths so they can learn from there and evaluate themselves. This study focused on the types of oral feedback the teacher gave in teaching English at SMKN 6 Pontianak, especially in teaching students' speaking skills in class XI. This study aims to determine the types of oral feedback the teacher uses to teach speaking skills and find out the most frequently used oral feedback. The researcher conducted classroom observations and teacher interviews to collect data, which were then analyzed using the interactive model from Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). Based on classroom observations and teacher interviews, the researcher found that the teacher used positive and corrective oral feedback to teach students' speaking skills. Positive oral feedback was given in the form of reinforcement 22 times (46.81%) and evaluative nine times (19.15%), which totalled 31 times (65.96%). Other than that, corrective oral feedback was given in three different ways: recast 10 times (21.28%), elicitation three times (6.38%), and request for clarification three times (6.38%). Overall, the teacher gave oral corrective feedback 16 times (34.04%). From all types of oral feedback, it can be concluded that the most frequently used oral feedback by the English teacher at SMKN 6 Pontianak is positive oral feedback. While the most frequently used oral corrective feedback is recast.

Abstract

This research was conducted using pre-experimental research to determine the effectiveness of Learn English Vocabulary application in enriching students’ vocabulary learning among the 7th-grade students of SMP Negeri 20 Pontianak. The total population was 186 students, and the sample was 15 students from class F. The data were gathered using a test in a form of multiple choices with a total of 25 questions. The test was distributed in a form of a pre-test and a post-test. The data were analysed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS v.26 with a 5% significance level. It showed that there was an enrichment of students’ vocabulary learning. It was indicated by the values of Sig. (2-tailed) score from the t-test calculation which was 0.000. It means the value was lower than 0.05. The hypothesis testing result also strongly provides evidence by the acceptance of the hypothesis alternative with a t score of 8.5 higher than the ttable score of 2.145. Moreover, the effect size calculation showed that the significant effect of the application is in a score of 2.1 which is interpreted as a strong effect. Therefore, the use of Learn English Vocabulary application is significantly effective in enriching students’ vocabulary learning.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the types of moral values ​​and describe how these moral values ​​are presented in the Zootopia movie, directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore. The research design was a qualitative descriptive study; the data sources are the movie itself and the movie script of Zootopia. The SPEAKING Model (setting and scene, participants, ends, act sequence, key, instrumentalities, norms, and genre) by Dell Hymes is used as a framework for assess the conversation in the movie. The research results showed that this movie contained twelve utterances classified based on the types of moral values defined by Josephson and Hanson, such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Also, the morals are analyzed more profoundly using the SPEAKING Model by Dell Hymes. The moral values ​​described in this study have important implications for teachers and other researchers, which can encourage the use of tools in analyzing literary works and can be applied in life.

Abstract

Speaking for Transactional Functions as a course in English foreign language learning curriculum is essentially needed. This Speaking  class provides students beneficial activities for the English language speaking skills development and give them a lot of experiences in the process of learning in and beyond the classroom and working through a project. This study aims at describing the students’ experiences on transactional speaking projects. Since this research describes the condition that exists, the most appropriate method used in this research is the descriptive method. Seven EFL students become the participants of the research. An interview are used for the data collection. The result of interview is then transcribed.  The responses on the interview show that Students get a lot of benefits from the transactional speaking projects. The projects improve their 21st century skill : communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. It also improves the skill of technology use and English language skills development. Besides the benefits,  the students also face some challenges in doing the project, such as choosing and exchanging the appropriate background for the topic, editing  video, and taking turn in conversation. However, the challenges encourage them to learn and do more for the improvement of their knowledge and behaviour. In short, the students get benefial experiences in the projects.
