Abstract

The present study contextualizes critical discourse analysis on Singapore Airlines Premium Economy Class Advertisement to uncover the discrepancies behind their advertisement. Airline Advertisement is intended to attract prospective customers. Singapore Airlines as one of the biggest airline companies in the world is without exception. Singapore Airlines proposes an advertisement which locates their brand as a low-cost airline to attract potential customers in which affordability and comfortability are their selling points. Their advertisement is marketed through glamorous and convincing advertisements as a find a way to attract more passengers. Yet most people do not realize the “hidden” agenda behind those advertisements. Through critical discourse analysis, one can uncover the signs and interrogate the message which lies behind the advertisement. An advertisement is inseparable with their connotation towards certain ideology and meaning behind the “curtain” which manifest through the word choices, images, symbols, and the colors represented there. This paper seeks to unwrap the “not-so-white-lie” represented in Singapore Airlines’ Premium Economy Class Advertisement through critical discourse analysis and Baudrillard’s four stages of signs.

Abstract

The portrayal of male masculinities varies from time to time following the engulfment of gender studies. It is seen from the significant increase of the discussion related to male and masculinities. Furthermore, discussions of masculinity are linked with how a particular culture perceive masculinity. In several Thai folktales and so-considered classic literature like the Legendary Tale of Krai Thong and the Legend of Phra Chao Sua, the heroes and the warriors present themselves as masculine. Their manly assets including body and gesture have become the exploitation of the story whilst being the model of masculinity. Utsana Phleungtham’s two main male characters in the novel the Story of Jan Dara is without exception. Those heroes of the story portray male masculinities through their existence and domination. Undertaking the library studies, this article illustrates how male masculinities are depicted and why it is manifested though those characters. The findings show that the male masculinities are presented vividly in order to maintain the rooted masculine domination.

The novels employed as the objects of study are The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta and Ibuk by Iwan Setyawan. The finding extrapolates a global conception towards motherhood and how it is presented. It is concluded that the depiction of motherhood in the novels is employed to maintain a social construction that privilege patriarchy. The African motherhood may be different than what they call Asian motherhood. Yet mothers, no matter where they are will always focus on their childrens well-doing.

Two selected novels are Ibuk written by Iwan Setyawan and The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta. The findings show that both mothers share similar concepts and representations of motherhood. In addition, those representations are used to maintain the social contructions which legitimise the patriarchal system. The African motherhood may be different with the Asian concept of motherhood in practical, yet mothers will focus on the wealth of their children no matter where they are.
