Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the developed storybook. Research and Development proposed by Branch (2009) consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) was used in developing the product. In the evaluation phase, formative evaluation proposed by Tessmer (1993) consisting of experts review, there were three experts reviewing the product, namely content expert, media expert, and instructional design expert. Three students involved in the one-to-one evaluation, six students involved in the small group phase and eleven students in the field phase. To collect the data, questionnaires, interview, and a test was used. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively for the interview and quantitatively by using the average score for the questionnaires and percentage for the test. The developed product was valid after being evaluated in the expert review phase in terms of its content, media, and instructional design with an average score of 4.1 categorized as highly valid. The product was also practical with an average score of 4.6 in One-To-One and 4.0 in Small Group phase categorized as highly practical. The product was also had very high effectiveness which average score 91.2.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not it was significantly effective to teach reading comprehension through self-monitoring approach to reading and thinking (SMART) strategy to the tenth-grade students of SMK Pertanian Negeri 2 Tugumulyo. The method applied in this research was quantitative with the pre-experimental method. The total number of population was 130 students of the tenth-grade students of SMK Pertanian Negeri 2 Tugumulyo. The sample of this research had taken by using cluster random sampling. The number of the sample was 33 students of class X.2. The instrument of the research was in form of multiple-choice tests. The data were analyzed through four techniques: individual score, conversion based on minimum mastery criteria (MMC), normality testing, and paired t-test. Based on the result of data analysis, the writers found that there were: the students’ average score in the pre-test was 58.18 and the post-test was 76.36, normality testing in the pre-test was 2.0724 and the post-test was 4.471, and the result of paired t-test was 6.401, which was higher than 1.697 with 95% (0.05) significance level for one tailed-test. It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In conclusion, it was significantly effective to teach reading comprehension through Self-monitoring approach to reading and thinking (SMART) strategy to tenth-grade students of SMK Pertanian Negeri 2 Tugumulyo.

Abstract

This research is aimed to investigate whether or not there is any significant effect of PQRST technique toward reading comprehension of second graders at SMAN 1 Kota Jambi.Preview, question, read, summary and test labeled PQRST is one of language teaching technique in reading comprehension. This technique can be used to solve students difficulties in comprehend the text and also can help the students to deepen their understanding of the text. The subjects were students of grade XI of SMAN 1 Kota Jambi. XI IA 1 was assigned as the experimental group and XI IA 2 was assigned as control group. The cluster sampling technique was used in this research. The design of this research is an experimental research to find out the cause and effect relationship between two variables. There are two data used in this research. The first data is pre test and the second is post test. After the data were collected, the researcher used t test analysis to see the significant difference between two variables. The result of this research showed that t test value was 3.15, at the level of significance 0.05 with df 60, the value of t table was 2.00. it is known that t test value was bigger than t table indicated the research hypothesis H1 was accepted where there is significance difference in students, reading comprehension between those who were taught by using PQRST technique and those who were taught without using PQRST technique. In summary, PQRST technique can help the students to comprehend the reading text well. Keywords: reading comprehension, PQRST technique

Abstract

The research aims at describing politeness used by Americans in Bad Neighbors movie to express apology. This is a qualitative descriptive research which identified, observed, transcribed the data as well as described them in the sentences. The findings present the strategy of apologizing and the use of address terms overviewed from politeness strategies such as positive politeness, negative politeness and off record. The use of address terms in expressing apology covered terms of addressing in negative politeness includes the use of title plus last name (TLN) (such as Mr. Haywood and Maam) and positive politeness includes different nick names (NN) (such as Mac, Baby, Scoonie, Guys, etc). The variation of apologizing includes direct apology (sorry and I am sorry). In the application of direct apology I am sorry, no address term was used in the expression and it indicates positive politeness. In a direct expression of apology sorry, there was a term of address used preceded the expression and sometimes it also occurred afterward. Based on the description, it can be inferred that most of expression of direct apology expressed in positive politeness because the first speaker wanted to show a more intimate relationship to the second speaker. The position of the terms also affects the purpose and the quality of sincerity of the speakers. This strategy considered to be an effective way to express apology to show that the speaker who committed a responsibility of apologizing regretted the mistakes. Abstract

IKABDMS adalah salah satu perkumpulan dari pemilihan pemuda dan pemudi terbaik daerah atau yang dikenal dengan Bujang Dehe Musi Rawas Sempurna. Salah satu kegiatan organisasi ini adalah melakukan promosi daerah (pariwisata/makanan khas/produk kerajinan lokal/budaya dan lain-lain), kegiatan public speaking (menggunakan bahasa Inggris) dan lain-lain. Sebagai organisasi kepemudaan, mereka dituntut untuk cakap dalam berbagai bidang termasuk penggunaan bahasa inggris di tingkat regional, nasional bahkan internasional. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan karna kurangnya penguasaan bahasa Inggris dan kurang percaya diri terutama speaking skill yang menjadi kendala mereka dalam melaksanakan tugas sebagai duta daerah. Pelatihan speaking ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan beberapa aplikasi bahasa Inggris dari smartphone yang dapat membantu mereka berlatih bahasa inggris dengan atau tanpa adanya pendampingan.

Abstract

This research aims at describing the communicative functions and the meaning of Slogans in Public Service Advertisements (PSA). This is a descriptive-qualitative research. The data derived from 20 PSA videos downloaded from Youtube. Then, they are collected through document analysis and analyzed with content analysis. There are only four types of meaning stated by Leech (1985) e.i 12 slogans with conceptual meanings, 7 slogans with connotative meanings, 7 slogans with affective meanings and 1 slogan with social meanings.  Based on the Illocutionary acts, some communicative functions found in PSA slogans are 1) to invite society to do something, 2) to inform people, 3) to report or to state something important, 4) to express emotion, and 5) to convince people doing something in the future.   Keywords: PSA slogans, communicative functions, language meaning, illocutionary act, speech act

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether the developing Islamic-based reading materials in genre-based context were valid, practical and had potential effect for the eighth graders of MTsN Model Kota Jambi. Developmental research proposed by Akker (1999) i.e analysis, design, evaluation and revision was applied in this study. In the evaluation phase, formative evaluation model proposed by Tessmer (1993) was used (i.e self evaluation, expert review, one to one, small group and field test). There were 3 students participating in one to one evaluation, 9 students in small group and one class (34 students) in field test. There were also two validators in reviewing the Islamic-based reading materials in genre-based context. One was expert of content and another one was expert of instructional design. The result of experts judgment showed that the product was valid with average score was 89.2 categorized in good validity. The product was practical with average score in one to one evaluation was 84.3 and in small group phase was 86.8. The potential effect of the product could be seen from the average score of students’ achievement in field test. The score was 92.8 meaning that the score was higher than the criterion of minimal mastery (KKM) of English subject in MTsN Model Kota Jambi (75). Therefore, the product had potential effect categorized in very good level.
