Abstract

Penelitian ini berupaya untuk menggali persepsi para mahasiswa terkait materi yang diajarkan dalam mata kuliah Writing for General Communication di salah satu kampus swasta di kota Cimahi. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini ada 33 orang. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penelitian ini mendapatkan informasi melalui kuesioner dan analisa dokumen. Kuesioner dibutuhkan untuk mengungkap fakta tentang respon mahasiswa terkait materi tersebut. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, para partisipan memberikan persepsi yang positif. Sebagian partisipan bahkan memberikan masukan agar peneliti membuat buku teks yang lebih ramah dengan literasi budaya dan sesuai dengan kearifan lokal di Indonesia. Implikasi dari hasil penelitian ini dapat digunakan menjadi pijakan dalam pembuatan buku yang koheren dengan kebutuhan mahasiswa selaku peserta didik.

Abstract

Abstract Teaching English for Foreign Language has some obstacles. Hopefully the obstables can be decreased by arranging the appropriate strategies to deliver the materials. The stakeholders, the lecturers, and experts try to clasify the suitable subjects to help students in mastering the language skills. Those language skills hopefully helps the students as teachers to be. One of the subjects taught for freshmen of English Education Department is Writing for General Communication. The research wants to reveal the phenomenon of lecturers’ preparation  to lecture the subject. The reseacher uses descriptive qualitative method. The participants are the lecturers team who arrange the Writing For General Communication text book. Keywords:  Teaching English for Foreign Language, Writing for General Communication, Preparation  Abstrak Pengajaran bahasa Inggris untuk penutur asing memang memiliki berbagai tantangan. Dengan spesifikasi mata kuliah yang disusun oleh para pemangku kebijakan di prodi Bahasa Inggris, diharapkan para mahasiswa dapat menguasai keterampilan-keterampilan berbahasa. Keterampilan-keterampilan berbahasa ini diharapkan dapat menghantarkan para mahasiswa untuk menjadi para pendidik yang memiliki kualifikasi mumpuni. Salah satu mata kuliah yang diajarkan pada prodi Bahasa Inggris adalah Writing for General Communication. Mata kuliah ini diajarkan pada mahasiswa semester awal. Maka penelitian ini berusaha mengungkap fenomena terkait persiapan yang sebaiknya dilakukan oleh para dosen untuk mengajar mata kuliah Writing For General Communication. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Abstract

The research concerns the problems found in teaching and learning English vocabulary. The students had difficulties in discovering the meaning of words and the application of the words. Vocabulary is the key in language skill. The aim of this research was to improve students’ vocabulary  mastery by applying mind map for  eight grade students at Waringin Junior High School in academic year 2018/2019. The method used in this analysis is Classroom Action Reseach (CAR) which consists of Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. This research was managed in two cycles. The participants of this reseach were eight grade students . The instruments used in this research were observation and test. From the data collected by the researcher, it can be drawn a conclusion that the use of mind mapping were able to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. It can be seen from the improvement of mean score of pre-test was 59,833. Then, the mean score of post-test1 increased 63,100, and mean score of post-test  2 was 80,733. Thus, it can be concluded that the mind map was the right method to be applied in teaching vocabulary.

Abstract

Writing is one out of four skills that should be mastered, but Writing is the most difficult one because of its complexity in making sentence. This research is intended to identify the students’ needs related to Writing for General Communication as a subject in the second semester. The research method was qualitative. The data were obtained from test, questionnaire and interview as a triangulation. The respondents were 33 students of second semester of English Department in IKIP Siliwangi Bandung. The data from test showed that students’ difficulties in writing dealing with linguistic problem. In addition, the data from questionnaire revealed that respondents have various educatioal experiences, their first language, their interests, their cultural background and different purposes for learning English. The result showed that almost 100% of students want to learn tenses, kinds of text, generic structure and punctuation. It indicates that there is a need to design a coursebook in Writing General Communication based on the students’ need. It is used as the basic for designing a textbook in Writing for General Communication subject. Need analysis, Material development, Writing for General Communication

Abstract

Academic emotions are essential factors for students’ successfulness in language learning. The present research was aimed at portraying academic emotions of Indonesian undergraduate students majoring English during transition from face-to-face learning to online one in speaking course due to COVID-19 pandemic. This study used qualitative method, particularly narrative study. The participants were four students majoring English language education of a private university in West Java, Indonesia. They took part in this study voluntarily. To gain the needed data, interviews were conducted. The data, was firstly analysed using Mile and Huberman’s (1994) concept of analysing qualitative data. Further, Hascher’s (2009) types of academic emotions was employed for further data analysis. This study revealed that negative emotions – bored, less motivated, doubtful, sadness, and worry – emerged because there was discrepancy between the students’ conception and the reality regarding what and how learning speaking were. Keywords:  Academic Emotions, English-Department Students, Online Learning

Abstract

Abstract This study is revealed based on  the observation on the tenth grade of X HT 1 Sangkuriang 2 Vocational High School.  The subjects of this study were consisted of 31 students. This study was aimed to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery using Cooperative Script Method. The research design was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which following from Kemmis and Taggart model. It is used to obtain the results of quantitative and qualitative data using 2 cycles described through planning, action, observation, and reflection on each cycle. The result of the study showed that there was a development on the student’s vocabulary mastery. It could be seen from the result of the test. The Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) of English lesson was 70.  The students mean score in the pre test was 50,  in the first post test the mean score was 65, and in the second post test the mean score was 85. In addition there were 2 students (6,4%) who passed KKM on pre test. In the first pretest there were 9 students (29,03%) who passed KKM. In the second pretest there were 29 students (93,55%) who passed KKM. Then, from the result of field notes and interview it showed the positive responses from the students. The students can be more active and improve their ideas. The researcher conclude that Cooperative Script method could improve student’s vocabulary mastery. Keywords:  Vocabulary, Cooperative Script, Descriptive Text, CAR

Abstract

Motivation is one of the most significant things in learning process. Without motivation, the purposes of learning is tough to be achieved. When learners have it in learning process, they will more understand with the materials, especially English. The goal of this study is to know how students’ motivation in learning English of eight grade at MTs Mathla’ul Anwar Sukaguna. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data was carried out by using a questionnaire of students’ motivation which have ten items adapted from Clement, Dornyei, & Noels (1994) and used an interview which have five questions‎. The data were processed in the percentage and descriptive explanation. The main findings described that the learners are entirety highly motivated. Based on this study’s findings, students of eighth grade at MTs Mathla’ul Anwar have that motivation, it is based on the outcome of questionnaire and interview. From the output of questionnaire, most of students choose the agree statements. It means that students has an savor in learning English. Furthermore, the yield of interview expressed that students have highly interesting in learning English. But in this case, the teacher have to be more creative in using the media, strategy, or delivered material in teaching learning activity to improve students’ motivation.

Abstract

People with disability have their chance to get the education as well as the other people. While they continue their study on higher level of education, they learn several subjects, included English. One of the skills should be mastered in learning English is speaking. Their speaking skill may different with the ordinary people who can see how the lecturers produce the utterances and watch the movies, etc. Thus, the people with disability have their own learning stategy to achieve the speaking skills. They use those learning strategies because they hope to master the speaking skills as good as the ordinary ones no matter what. The research method is descriptive qualitative. There are two participants in the research. They use application of screen reader to drill the vocabulary and pronounciation. Screen reader is one of the applications that help people with disability to master speaking skill. It can be downloaded in playstore. They learn speaking skill autodidactly. They also brave to practice their speaking skill with lecturers and classmate of English Department. Keywords:  people with disability, learning strategy, speaking skill

Abstract

This research entitled An Analysis Speech Act Used By Anna As The One of Characters in “Frozen” Movie Script, in this analysis the writers to find out the utterances that appear and the influence for the hearer aster the utterances is stated. Each speech showing three parts of speech acts, namely locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. However, this study only focuses on the discussion of illocutionary acts because basically the aim of the research is to find out what illocutionary acts used by Anna as one of the characters in the frozen movie so that the sense of a speech can be understood well in certain social interaction. The film of Frozen was chosen as the source of the data in this research because of the many illocutionary acts of speech spoken by Anna. The data was collected from the “Frozen” movie script . Based on the result of the study, the data found there are five kinds of illocutionary acts in the script, namely; 102 representatives forces,  32 directives forces, 11 commisive forces,  41 expressives forces, and 1 declarative force.

Abstract

Seperti diketahui bersama bahwa kebutuhan peserta didik di SMP adalah untuk lulus UN, sehingga para guru bahasa Inggris tidak terlalu fokus pada keterampilan menulis. Target khusus yang diharapkan adalah para guru bahasa Inggris dapat merasakan manfaat dari Flash Card (kartu kata) sebagai Alat Permainan Edukatif (APE) pada pembelajaran keterampilan menulis. Metode pengabdian ini melalui beberapa tahapan yaitu : a) tahap analisa, b) tahap perancangan dan pengembangan konten, c) tahap pelaksanaan  dan d) tahap pelatihan. Tahap pelaksanaan pengabdian ini adalah memaparkan tentang pentingnya APE dalam pengajaran menulis. Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan membagi para guru bahasa Inggris dalam sepuluh kelompok dengan tujuan agar mereka mencoba membuat APE menggunakan bahan yang sudah tersedia. Selanjutnya, dilaksanakan workshop menggunakan alat dan bahan yang mudah didapat di sekitar. Untuk menunjukkan hasil dari pengabdian dalam khalayak penggiat ilmu, maka dilakukankan pembuatan jurnal dan publikasi ilmiah. Setelah merasakan manfaatnya, diharapkan mereka dapat mengaplikasikan dalam pengajaran writing. Hasil yang tampak dari pengabdian ini adalah para  guru memiliki motivasi yang lebih tinggi manakala mengetahui bahwa metode mengajar bisa lebih variatif dengan cara berkreasi menggunakan bahan yang mudah didapat menjadi sebuah media atau alat permainan edukatif seperti kartu kata atau flash cards.   Kata Kunci : game, APE, Flash Card, guru Bahasa Inggris, keterampilan menulis
