Abstract

This research aims to investigate students' perception on using Google Classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic in learning English. The subjects of this study were all eighth grade students of Islamic Junior High School (SMP Islam) As-Shofa Pekanbaru with the total of 105 students. This research was conducted by using a quantitative method. Data were collected using online questionnaire. The result showed that there were three indicators on using Google Classroom during COVID-19 pandemic in learning English; in terms of its usefulness, easiness and satisfaction. The result of the research shows that the average mean score was 3.72 which means students had highly positive response. It indicates that most students gave positive responses toward using Google Classroom during COVID-19 pandemic in learning English, most of students was agree that Google Classroom was easy to use and have good performance to use Google Classroom in learning English because Google Classroom facilitate the students to save and get materials, assignment, information and announcement, enhances students’ learning productivity, improves students’ performance, and students are satisfied and interested in learning English. This study implies that Google Classroom can be considered as one of alternative learning platforms that can be used by schools to learn English during pandemic situation and other emergency situations.

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this study is to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of using mind mapping technique on the ability of the second year students of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted at SMPN 40 Pekanbaru which is located on Jl. Garuda Sakti Kec. Tampan Pekanbaru and had been started from August, 2017 till September, 2017. The population in this research was the second year students of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru. The number of entire population was 170. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to determine the sample. The participant of this research was 43 students of VIII.A class. This research focuses on the students’ writing ability in writing descriptive texts before and after the treatment that can be seen from their score on the given writing tests. The result proved that mind mapping is effective to improve the students’ writing ability especially in writing descriptive texts. It can be seen from the students’ mean score on post-test (67.32) that was higher than on pre-test (55.73). So, it helped the students to generate their ideas, expand their creativity and understanding of key vocabulary and concepts in simple definitions and integrate their background knowledge into definition. Further, it was suggested that the students may use mind mapping and keep writing in order to accustom themselves to organize and connect the information when they are writing a text. This research can be also used as a reference to conduct further studies related to writing ability.Keywords : Pre-Experiment Research, Writing Ability, Mind mapping, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out the Ability of the Second Year Students of the Vocational High School (SMK) Taruna Satria Pekanbaru in Comprehending Narrative Texts. The population of this research was the Second Year Students of the Vocational High School (SMK) Taruna Satria Pekanbaru. The number of sample was 32 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The research instrument was multiple choice questions consisted 30 questions. The test was given by using six components of reading comprehension of narrative texts such as specific information, moral value, main idea, reference, meaning of difficult word, and making inference of narrative text. The data were analyzed by classifying them into four levels of ability, such as poor, average, good, and excellent. The result showed that the ability of the second year students of the Vocational High School (SMK) Taruna Satria Pekanbaru was at good level with mean score was 65,2.Key Words: Students’ ability, Reading comprehension, Narrative text

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out the ability of the students in writing procedure texts made by the third year students of SMP Negeri 2 Kubu Babussalam. This is quantitative descriptive research. The populations of this research were the third year students of SMP Negeri 2 Kubu Babussalam. The sample of this research was 25 students of 9.1 classes who have been selected using cluster-sampling technique. The data were collected by using writing test. The data were analyzed by applying the rules of Brown (2007) through three raters. The findings of this study revealed that the students ability of the third year students of SMPN 2 Kubu Babussalam in writing procedure texts in the 2020/2021 academic year is in good level. The students’ mean score in writing a procedure text is 69.1. To be more specific, 5 students are categorized as excellent, 17 students are categorized as good, 3 students are categorized as mediocre, and there are no students categorized as poor. Based on the findings, there are have recommendations given to the students to improve their ability in writing; to pay attention to vocabulary and grammar, so the students should doing more writing activity especially in writing procedure text and learn more also understand about grammar used.Key Words: Ability, Writing, Procedure Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out the ability of the fourth semester students’ morphological awareness in English Study Program, Universitas Riau. The population of this research was the fourth semester students. The number of sample was 23 students selected randomly from 3 classes (A Class, B Class, and C Class) by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a written test in the form of multiple choices with 55 questions based on the indicators of morphological awareness stated by Ken Apel (2014). The test instrument consist of four parts which cover the components of morphological awareness namely spoken form of morphemes (allomorph), meaning and grammatical changes, manner of affixes (orthography), and relation between base words and its derived and inflected forms. The data were analyzed by using a formula made by Wayan and Sumartana (1986) and then classified into five levels of ability: very poor, poor, mediocre, good and excellent by using classification made by Harris (1969). Based on the findings of this research, it was found that the students’ morphological awareness ability of the fourth semester students was in a good level with the mean score 63. The implication of this research is that the fourth semester students are in a good level of morphological awareness ability.Key Words: Students’ Morphological Awareness, Students’ ability.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine how effective the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy is in teaching students to read descriptive texts. The analysis used in this research was descriptive. The population of this research was all the first year students of SMA N 1 Reteh in the 2019/2020 Academic Year and one teacher. The sample for this research was 34 students from X MIPA 2 class who had been selected by using the cluster-random-sampling technique. A questionnaire and an interview were used to collect data. The questionnaire consisted of 10 statements and the interview consisted of 10 questions. Based on the result of the questionnaire, the mean score is 4.05, which means that the use of Scaffolded Reading Experience influenced by reading activity in the learning process in English class is high. Based on the result of the interview, the teaching outcomes which used the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy were good. The teacher said that the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy was easy to use and helped the students to understand the descriptive text more easily. Following comprehension, the teacher stated that some of the students could create their own descriptive text, though some students still struggled with writing the text. But after the students asked for re-explanation, the teacher explained again until the students understood a little more. The teacher thought the quality was good. The teacher stated that she would use the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy as her first choice in the classroom teaching and learning process and that she would recommend the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy to her peers for teaching other subjects.Key Words: Using, Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy, Reading, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was conducted to find out the students’ ability incomprehending recount texts. This descriptive research design took place in SMP N 1Kuantan Hilir Seberang. The sample was 22 students from VIII2 class that wereselected by using cluster random sampling. There were 40 questions in this test. Theresearcher used the validity and reliability formula of theory Heaton 1991 in analysisdata by using manual calculation, it was found that the reliability of the test was 1.13which means that the reliability of the test was very high. The data were analyzed bycalculating the students’ score individually and finding out the mean score. Thestudents’ scores were classified into four ability levels; poor, mediocre, good, andexcellent. Based on the results of this research, the students’ ability in comprehendingrecount text at second year of SMP N 1 Kuantan Hilir Seberang was in good level.Meanwhile, the mean score of the whole students’ scores was 71.9. It was found that thehighest mean score is in finding social function and finding generic structure with themean score 75.4. The lowest aspect in comprehending recount text was in makinginferences with the mean score was 65.45.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Comprehending Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed at finding out the reading ability of the first year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. The population of this research was the first year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pekanbaru. The number of sample was 34 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was multiple choice test items with 30 questions. Each text consists of 6 questions which cover the components of reading and the components of descriptive namely finding main ideas, finding factual information, finding meaning of vocabulary words, finding references, finding inferences and finding social functions. The data were analyzed by classifying them into five levels of ability: very poor, poor, mediocre, good and excellent. Based on the findings of this research, it was found that the students’ reading ability of the first year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts was in good level with the mean score was 61. The implication of this research is that the first year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pekanbaru have a good ability in reading descriptive texts.Key Words: Students’ ability, Reading, Descriptive Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the students’ ability in comprehending recount texts and aimed at finding out the ability of the second year students of SMKF Ikasari Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. The sample was XI.5-Pharmacy (38 students) chosen by cluster random sampling technique. The result showed that the reading ability of the second year students of SMKF Ikasari pekanbaru in comprehending recount text is in good level with the mean score was 61. However, this score was lower than the minimum score criteria(75). The most difficult aspect in comprehending recount text was in making inferences (46.1). Then, the easiest aspect was in finding factual information (83.6). Then, the students’ mean score in term of finding main idea was 65.8. The students’ mean score in term of finding references and finding the meaning of difficult word was same; it was 57.9. The students’ mean score in term of finding generic structure, with the mean score was 50. And the students’ mean score in term of finding social function of recount text was 55.3. The last, the students’ mean score in term of finding language features of recount text was 71.1.Therefore, this research suggested that the English teachers to focus on the components where students still find it difficultt and the students should learn that texts for better comprehension of other reading texts.Key Words: Student’s Ability, , Comprehending Recount Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study was conducted by using One-Group Pretest-Posttest design to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of ‘Hot Potato Strategy’ on the second year students’ ability in reading comprehension at SMPN 18 Pekanbaru. The sample of the research was 35 students of class VIII.6 and obtained by using cluster random sampling technique. 40 multiple choices of recount text was the instrument of the test. The students’ scores were analyzed by using Microsoft Excel 2007 and SPSS 23.0 (Statistical Product and Service Solution) for windows. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (74.14>63.93). Then, it also showed that t-test was higher than t-table (10.048>2.03) at significance level of 5%. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of ‘Hot Potato Strategy’ on the second year students’ ability in reading comprehension at SMPN 18 Pekanbaru.Keywords: Effect, Hot Potato Strategy, Reading Comprehension
