Abstract

This paper presents study   result on the log peeling properties  and the glueing,  physical and mechanical properties of the veneer and plywood  made from nine wood species are described in this paper. The result shows that all of the, logs could be peeled in cold condition. The average veneer shrinkage from green to oven dry moisture content was 7.00 % and veneer swelling from oven dry to air dry  condition the average value was 3.39 %. The average thickness reduction due to pressing in plywood manufacturing was  3. 78 mm. The  bonging strength of plywood  from 8  wood species (89 %)  conforms  with the Indonesian standard  for  type  II, 9 wood species  (100 %)   with Japanese standard and 9 wood species (100 %)  with German standard.  The average specific gravity  of multiplex  was 0.61 while the average specific gravity of trplex was  0.60. Bending strength. tensile strength and compression  strength parallel to grain of triplex are higher  than multiplex.

Abstract

experimental laminated veneer ( 5 - ply ) were made from 12 wood species veneers glued with urea formaldehyde. Thickness of veneer was 1.5 mm and the range of veneer density was 0.38 - 0.83 g/cm3. Veneers were divided into 3 groups based on their densily i.e. low, medium and high. The laminated veneer properties were tested in accordance with the plywood standards ( JAS and ASTM) the properties tested were density,moisture content, bending strength, tensile strength, compression strength , and moisture resistant. Bonding strengththe results showed that all kinds of wood species combination could be made for laminated veneer glued with urea formaldehyde without any difficullty. The density of laminated veneer was higher than an average veneer density of single. wood species or an average veneer density of mixed wood species. The mechanical properties of laminated veneer increased as the densily of laminated veneer increased and the relationship could be expressed by linear regression equations. As a result, some laminated veneer properties could be estimated from its density without considering its wood species.

Abstract

The objectives of the study was to determine the effect of phoxim on the properties of rubber wood particleboard (Hevea brasiliensis ) phoxim concentration used were 0.05,1, 1.5 and 2 % based on particle dry weight.The result showed, that the addition of phoxim preservative to particleboard reduced the values of modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, internal bond strength and shear strength, but increased the thicknees swelling and water absorption of particleboard. However, the phyrical. and mechanical properties of particleboard treated With phoxim preservative up to 2 % met the FAO standard for medium density particleboard and met JIS for type 150 particleboard. Compared with Indonesian standard all particleboards produced met the standard requirements except for internal bond strength.

Abstract

The  results  of  laboratory  test   of  wood-wool  board properties  made from  rubberwood (Hevea   brasiliensis)    and sengon  (Paraserianthes   falcataria)    are  reported  in this paper.   The wood used were obtained feom  different age groups i.e. 10  and 20 years for rubberwood and 5,  10  and  15  years for  sengon.  The properties  tested  were  board density,  moisture   content, thickness  reduction  due  to compression and bending strength.The physical  and mechanical properties  of sengon  wood-wool board which the  wood-wool was soaked  in  cold  water for  24 hours prior  to  board fabrication  were improved.  However, that treatment  did not improve the properties  of rubberwood wood-wool board.   The properties of wood-wool board made from different age groups of tree seem to be similar.

Abstract

It has been known that  tannin formaldehyde  resin  is suitable for exterior plywood  adhesive. one   of the source of tannin is Acacia decurrens bark. A study on using tannin formaldehyde from.  Acacia  decurrens   bark has been done  to predict  the effect of  glue spread  and percentage of filler on the plywood   bonding strength. The results show that glue spread has not sigatficant effect on plywood  bonding strength, while percentage of  filler  has significant effect on plywood  bonding strength and all plywood resulted meet German  Standard requirement for  exterior purpose. (AW 100).From  the economic paint of view,  it is recommended. to use glue spread of 150 g/m2 and percentage of filler of 4o%.

Abstract

The problem in using plywood bonded with urea formaldehyde (UF) is formaldehyde emission, especially in a room with limited ventilation. To reduce formaldehyde emission, the glue can be mixed with catching agent. In this paper the effect of urea and melamine as catching agent on formaldehyde emission and on bonding strength of UF bonded plywood made from red meranti (shorea. spp) is discussed.The effect of catching agent type on formaldehyde emission is not significant while the effect of percentage of catching agent is highly significant on formaldehyde emission. The higher percentage of catching agent, the lower formaldehyde emission of plywood.The effect of catching agent type on plywood bonding strength is not significant, but the effect of percentage of catching agent is highly significant. The higher percentage of urea the lower plywood bonding strength, while the higher percentage of melamine and urea-melamine cause the higher plywood bonding strength. To meet formaldehyde emission of 0.165 ug/ml, it is recomended to use 10% urea on the weight basis of liquid UF.

Abstract

This report  deals with the  laboratory  tests  on  the  properties of  particle board made  from  coconut  wood  and from  coconut wood with  hardwood bonded by urea formaldehyde. The  tests include board density, moisture  content, water absorption, thickness swelling and bending  strength.The  result  reveals that physical and  mechanical  properties of  particle boards  made  from  coconut wood  conform with FAO Standard.  The  properties  of  particle boards  made  from   coconut  wood mixture  with  hardwood in  the proportion of  1 : 1 which conform the  FAO  Standard are limited to density and water absorption.

Abstract

The  higher percentage  of catching agent,  the lower plywood  bonding strength.To meet  formaldehyde emission  of  0,165 µg/ml  it  is recomended to use urea  14%  on  the  weight basis of liquid  UF. The bonding strength  of this plywood conforms   with  the Japanese standard, 1973.

Abstract

Formerly perupuk wood was not recognized as good raw material by wood working manufacturers. Because of the increasing scarcity of ramin wood, the perupuk   wood had gained the benefit of the situation as indicated by increasing demand and price of perupuk   wood.The technical and economic studies on perupuk   wood (Lophopetalum.   spp)  utilization  wascarried out at one wood working mill in Gresik, East Java in 1994.   The objectives of the study were to identify   kind  of products  resulted from perupuk    utilization,  recovery level of each product, productivity and efficiency ofperupuk wood working machineries,  and its value added.The study showed that kind of products  resulted from perupuk    utilization were moulding,smooth-four-side (S4S), finger jointed  stick, solid jointed  board and finger jointed  board. The average  recovery  of perupuk    utilization  was  55%  and  the highest  recovery  (65.60%) was obtained by smooth-four-side product.  The double planer machine had the highest productivity because all products  used the machine to get the standard dimensions. The efficiency of some perupuk    wood  working  machineries  still  low.   The  value  added  of perupuk    wood  working products  were 90%,  55%,   52%,  37% and  24% for  smooth-four-side,  finger jointed  board, moulding,  solid jointed board and fingerjointed stick respectively.Key words :   perupuk,   wood working,  recovery and value  added.
