Abstract

machining properties of ten wood species from north Sulawesi was studied. the sampie  materiawas tested using ASTM D-1666-64, that was modified to forest products researeh institute report No. 160 (1982). firatiy, the;samples (25 pieoes/species) were dried to an equilibrium moisture content condition (15 or 18 % of MC). the machine-ing properties examined were paining, shaping, boring, turning and the percentage wood defect recorded.                the result shows that, five wood species has fair to very good machining properties i.e.Dysoxylum sp. elmerillia ovalis, lophopetalum javenicum, pangium edule and serianthes minahassae.the remainders has good to very good machine-ing properties, whereas three wood secies i.e. aglaia versteghii.lapiacea subintegerrima and neonaudes sp. better than others.

Abstract

It is traditionally acknowledged that teak wood (Tectona grandis L.f) originated from Muna district had a better quality than that of South-Kendari. The objective of this study was to evaluate the different characteristics of both teaks. Wood samples were collected from bottom,  central and top part of trees from  age class 11 and Ill  (18 and 28 years) extracted from each region.  Samples were then examined for their anatomical and physical characteristics to determine the quality. Results revealed that teak wood samplesfrom Muna had higher dimensions in fiber  diameter, fiber  lumen width and vessel diameter than those of South-Kendari samples.  Such characteristics might bring the samples from Muna to have a higher specific gravity than the South-Kendari samples. It was also clearly shown that the older trees (age class III) possessed better characteristics than those of the young ones (age class II).

Abstract

Three teak wood sawmilis  in Central Java and two in East  Java have been selected for study on target aize determi- nation Using 100  board samples  from   each sawmill. The result was calculated using formulos for determining lumber tar get sizeThe  rasult  indicates that actual size produced by three sawmills were higher than target size,  ranging from 0.32 mm to 2.11  mm. The actual size produced by  two other sawmills was lower than the tagret size, ranging from 0.61  mm to 6.48 mnt 5.48 mm.  This result indicates  that target size determination is important  to improve  sawing  efficiency.

Abstract

Machining  properties  of  ten  wood  species from West Nusa Tenggara is reported  in this paper. The sample material was tested under ASTM D-1666 that was modified   according to  Forest Products Research  Institute Report No.160 (1982). The  samples (25  pieces/species) were  dried  to  equilibrium   moisture content condition (15 to18 %  of  MC). The  machining  properties   tested  are planing,  shaping,  boring,  turning,  and sanding.Four species  that have good  to  very good  machining properties  are Anthocephalus cadamba  Miq., Duabanga moluccana BL., Eugenia longiflora (Presl.) F. Viii., and  Eugenia polyantha Wight. Whereas the other species have poor  machining properties   i.e.,  Ailanthus  malabarica DC, Ficus  microcarpa   L.f  and  Palaquium  javense Burck.
