Abstract

This present study was aimed at investigating how to increase listening skill using English songs, and how to motivate the student in learning listening. The background of this study was commenced by the important framework concept in using English songs in the interaction process of communication in the classroom. The research used classroom action research. The respondent consists of20 students at the eighth grade of SMP Achmad Yani Puger in the academic year of 2016-2017. In the data gathering process, the researcher used listening cloze test administered in both cycle I and cycle II.The data analysis  of listening ability using English songs using description score, and statistics to see the average of the students score after the first observation have been done, the students score 81,35. It can be concluded that listening teaching process through English songs can increase the students’ listening ability. Key words: students’ listening ability, English songs

Abstract

This research aims to investigate English written spelling ability of students, with understanding types of spelling error, and causes of spelling error to prevent students with such repetition of error. Dictation test is used to test students' spelling ability. The subject of this research is seventh grade students of MTs Baniy Kholiel. There were 23 participants and 6 students as sample. The research used descriptive qualitative and error analysis as the research design. The data were collected through dictation test, interview and content analysis. The results found eight types of spelling error, such as; letter add 4%, letter omit 18,05%, transposition letter 0,39%, doubling letter 2,50% , vowel substitution 18,70%, consonant substitution 19,36%, change of word 10%, and missing word 28%. Causes of spelling error are students' weakness on vocabulary mastery, influence of L1, weak in phonological knowledge in stressing letter, blending sound, deletion of sound, and identifying sound in word. Weak in morphological knowledge such as: singular and plural form, and article (a/an and the), and less appropriate instruction of spelling ability in English. Abstract

Teaching writing is an important way for communication and also it helps us develop, organize and reinforce our thoughts. This research reports on an analysis of the eighth-grade students’ writing ability of descriptive text at SMPI Mumbulsari. 24 students were chosen as the sample. The method used in this study was descriptive research. The data from this research was collected from a writing test. It was found that the ability of the students in writing the descriptive text was in a fair category from the score. Based on the result, 1 student (Excellent), 7 students (Good), 10 students (Fair), 5 students (Poor), 1 student (Very Poor). Meanwhile, having to Analyze the students’ ability in each aspect of writing, it can be said was not quite satisfying. It can be know from the students’ mean score categorized as fair, and the students’ score based on the five aspects of the mechanic was low. Keywords: ability, descriptive text, writing skill

Abstract

Effective usage of DMs can help both readers and writers to understand better.Many researchers point out that DMs are important thing in writing, but in another situation, there are still many students using inappropriate DMs in their writing. The goal of this study is to know inappropriate Discourse markers on their essay and also to know what are the factors behind it by studying argumentative essay using Fraser taxonomy and conducting interview.The result argumentative essay, it is found misused discourse markers and overused discourse markers. Total number of inappropriate DMs on students’ argumentative essay are 26 markers. Based on the interview, the researcher found some factors; lack of knowledge, lack of instruction and lack of the awareness about discourse markers.From the result of this study, it indicated that the students’ knowledge about discourse markers were limited. Besides, their essayswere less coherent and cohesive. As conclusion, limitation and recommendation were then discussed. Keyword: Argumentative Essay, Cohesiveand Coherent, Discourse Markers
