Abstract

It is said that Afro-American literature is the body of literature produced in the United states by writers of African descent. Today, Afro-American literature has become accepted as an integral part of American literature. In broad terms, Afro-American literature can be defined as writings by people of African descent living in the United States. This qualitative study analyzes a short story entitled Gorilla, My Love written by a female Afro-American writer, Toni Cade Bambara. The analysis of the study aims at answering the three problem formulation: (1) states the literariness of the text (2) explains how the literariness of the text play as a means to symbolize a “broader” text (the universe) and (3) writes the proof of mental evidences taken from the text. In analyzing the short story, this study uses Sociology of Literature and Psychology of Literature. The two theories help readers understanding the theme of the short story by reading the explanation about how the narrator of the story set the plot. This study uses narrative as its approach since this is a literary study where a short story is analyzed through its narrative structure. The conclusion of the study provides the proof of its research benefits: giving information to readers about the following: (1) all about Afro-American literature plus its life-experience, family-values, etc. (2) how a literary work can connect its readers to their life and (3) an understanding that a reading-act strengthens the definition that a literary work is as a portrait of human experience.

Abstract

The data of this study are student activities and learning outcomes writing using Think Pair Share method. This research method is classroom action research. The subjects of this study were students in X IPA 6 of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Klaten. Which consists of two cycles, each cycle consists of two meetings. The purpose of this study was Think Pair Share model to increase activity and learning outcomes. The use of analytic research describes data analysis. Before the acting class research conducted in the pre-test was 16%, the increase in cycle 1 was 52% and 84% in the second cycle. That the application of think pair share model of student learning outcomes can, as evidenced by an increase in learning outcomes showed an increase in student scores 4.6 (71.8 - 67.2) from test one.In addition, the results of this study also experienced an increase in character in every aspect, namely responsibility, confidence, honesty, cooperation, good communication, and others. This can be seen in activities in cycles 1 and 2. The results show that the results of Think Pair Share can improve the character and learning outcomes in X IPA 6 of SMA Muhammadiyah1 Klaten in the academic year of 2017/2018. Abstract

This study aims to know the English proficiency of tourist actors in Klaten. The data of this research consist of primary data and secondary data. Primary data are the data gotten from English proficiency of tourist actors in Klaten, especially in speaking skill. Meanwhile, secondary data are the data from the tourism department of Klaten. This research method is descriptive quantitative. The subjects of this study are tourist actors in temple and water tourist spots in Klaten, which consists of officers, sellers, parking attendants, security, and other tourist actors. The temple tourist spots are Plaosan temple and Sojiwan temple. Meanwhile, the water tourist spots are Umbul Ponggok and Umbul Cokro (OMAC). The choice of those spots is depended on the most foreign tourists among that type of tourist destinations. The result of the study shows that the English proficiency of tourist actors in temple tourist attractions is higher (50%) than water tourist attractions (8,33%). In temple tourist attractions, tourist actors who have high English proficiency is 50%, average is 37.5%, low is 12.5%. In water tourist attractions, tourist actors who have high English proficiency is 8.33%, average is 29.16%, low is 62.5%. This study also got other data that tourist actors in Klaten have important role to support tourism industry in Klaten to attract tourists, both domestic and foreign, but their awareness of it is still low. Most of them still rely on domestic tourists than foreigners.

Abstract

This study aims at describing errors on writing of primary school teacher education students (PGSD) Universitas Widya Dharma Klaten to know the students’ English competence. The strategy of the research in this study is descriptive qualitative; and the qualitative data is the students’ writing. The data here are collected from 23 students’ work in making a composition. The erroneous sentences analyzed based on three classifications, namely the surface strategy taxonomy, influencing language switch, and students’ writing skill. The writers analyze the data carefully to find errors. The errors are divided according to its classification. Based on the data findings, the writers found that from 26 students of primary school teacher education (PGSD) Unwidha there are 23 students made some errors, two students made a good composition without any error, and one student didn’t write the composition. The researchers finally list 76 errors of students’ writing. The writers conclude that there are 35 errors (46.052%) based on the surface strategy taxonomy, 9 errors (11.842%) based on influencing language switch, and 32 errors (42.105%) based on students’ writing skill.
