Abstract

Controlled pollination technique could be applied to generate gene recombinant from families in progeny test and to estimate genetic parameters. The early step in evaluation of controlled pollination is to estimate general combining ability and specific combining ability. the objectives of this research were to estimate generic parameters on full sib progeny test of melaleuca cajuputi subsp cajuputi cajuput and to identify gene action controlling growth and oil traits. The research was conducted on full sib progeny test at Gunungkidul established in an incomplete block Design with six treeplots and eight replications. Tree height and diameter stem growth were observed at seven years old. Oil yield and cineol content were examined using gas chromatography. Analysis of variance and genetic parameter were calculated for all measured variables. The result showed that individual heretabilities on growth traits (hi2 of stem diameter = 0,34 and tree height = 0,01, respectively) were lower than on oil traiths (hi2 of oil yield =0,6 and cineole = 0,4 respectively). This indicated that oil traits tend to genetically controlled. Analysis of variances on general combining ability (GCA) and Specific Combining Ability (SCA) effects from a serries of 15 sets of 5x5 half-diallel mating experiments showed that all traits (height, diameter, oil and 1,8 cineole yields) were controlled by non-aditive genes. Consequently, controlled pollination of selected plus trees should be carried out until heterosis of improved progenies could be found.

Abstract

Flowering synchrony will support the extent of random mating among families and hence the genetic gain in the resultant progeny. In the study, synchrony among families for flowering and peak flowering was estimated through the phenogram as well as the overlapping index. Research was carried out at cajuput (Melaleuca cajuputi sub species cajuputi) seed orchard in two flowering periods (2010 and 2011) at Paliyan, Gunungkidul. The observation results showed that peak flowering occurred in the middle of January and more than 75% families in cajuput seed orchard have the same flowering time. More than 90% families have overlapping index value greater than 0.8 in contrast to 2 families originated from Western and Northern Australia which revealed very low (<0.6) overlapping index. Seeds harvested from the cajuput seed orchard showed high genetic potencial, as 75% trees in Paliyan seed orchard produced seeds simultaneusly.

Abstract

The breeding program of Melaleuca cajuputi subsp. cajuputi in Indonesia  was started  in 1994 by the Institute for Biotechnology and Forest Tree Improvement in cooperation  with CSIRO-Australia. An assessment  of progeny test of M. cajuputi at Paliyan at  23 months and at Sukun-Ponorogo at 36 months old were conducted to ascertain the  patterns of genetic variation in growth and foliar oil   and to  estimate genetic parameters in growth and foliar oil .  Based on the evaluation, genetic variation on growth and oil yield were high. Genetic gain estimation for growth and oil yield were 11.83 to 20.38 % in the progeny test seedling seed orchard of M. Cajuputi at Sukun, Ponorogo.
