Abstract

Language and culture are now considered interwoven, as culture becomes an integral part of learning a foreign language. This study aims to ascertain FL lecturers' perspectives on intercultural education and classroom procedures, including instructional materials, classroom activities, assessment, and the role of teachers in fostering intercultural awareness. Six lecturers were surveyed in this study. The six lecturers include three Arabic language education lecturers and three English language education lecturers with roughly five years of teaching experience. The data collection instrument is an interview guideline. The findings indicated that instructors acknowledged the importance of integrating culture into FL classrooms via various strategies and methods. Their statements include the following: they are frequently compelled to keep to textbook activities and activities previously prepared for the textbook since they have little time in class to address cultural concerns due to the syllabi's high expectations.

Abstract

Background: Novels are book-length fictional prose narratives, usually representing characters and actions with some degree of realism. Because of the main character in Linda Howard’s Novel Cover Night, it is important to study Purpose: to find out and describe the psychology of the main character in the novel Cover of Night by Linda Howard so that it helps obtain information and knowledge about the linguistic psychology of the main character, as well as developing literature. Studies related to character building. Method: This study uses the library method. The researcher will describe the main character of the novel. Namely Linda Howard’s novel “Cover of Night” as the primary data source. The other is about the characters in the novel. Researchers use a psychological approach to analyze the novel. Results and Discussion: The results of this study are that the main characters, Cate Nightingale and Calvin Harris, in this novel are portrayed positively as good characters, while Cate Nightingale is a loyal woman. She had no relationship with other men after her husband’s death. Her love for her husband made her blind and never attracted to other men. Cate is also a hardworking woman. He has to work hard to earn money to raise his children, so Calvin falls in love with Cate. Calvin Harris is a strong and mighty man with such a significant character that he makes an impression on one’s life. Implication: This research provides positive inspiration about Calvin’s personality as a character who has a heroic nature. This novel helps obtain information about the linguistic psychology of the main character, who is always brave in protecting someone he loves, even though he has to risk his life.

Abstract

There are four interrelated aspects in teaching learning process that is teacher, students, materials, and evaluation and assessment. The things that should be paid attention related to materials are materials selection, materials development and design, and materials evaluation or textbook evaluation. Regarding to textbook evaluation, this article aims to investigate teachers’ perspectives on textbook of curriculum 2013 or K 13 for the second grade. Eighteen teachers both from public and private vocational high schools in Gorontalo city were asked to assign their opinions about the textbook of K 13 using checklist method adapted from Al Harbi. The five categories of Al Harbi in questionnaire are: layout and design, the objectives of the textbook, teaching methods and activities, language skills, and evaluation. The data from checklist were entered into excel program to find out the percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Afterward, the findings of excel analyzed descriptively. The study’s result revealed that the averages mean score of layout and design was 4.01, the objectives of the textbook was 4.18, teaching methods and activities was 3.84, language skills was 3.99, and evaluation was 3.89. Therefore, from the perspectives of English teachers, they agree that the English textbook for the second grade of vocational high school is appropriate to be used.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe students' perceptions in learning grammar using social media during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research used qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The subjects of this study were 20 students who had been taught grammar through social media due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak in the third semester of the English Education Department of the Sultan Amai State Islamic Institute of Gorontalo in the academic year 2020/2021 which were taken with a purpose. Data collection that used was questionnaires and interviews. The data obtained were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions / data verification. The results of this study indicated that Students perception show that the most preferred social media for learning grammar by using social media was YouTube, Zoom, and WhatsApp and based on the result of research it showed that learning grammar by using social media are quite diverse and elaborate it. was very helpful, increasing the value, quite flexible but less motivated, less facilitated, not effective, has more disadvantages than advantages and less of interested. Based on students’ perception, 15 out of 20 students feel that they are not facilitated by the network to access the internet to learn grammar online because many students learn in their respective areas which are still difficult to signal to access the internet.
