Abstract

Backgrounds. Diabetes mellitus is a degenerative disease that has various complications. One of neglected diabetes mellitus complication is skeletal muscle atrophy. Turmeric and java turmeric extracts were need to be clarified due to those effect as antihyperglycemic agent which might affected muscle atrophy as one of diabetes mellitus complication. Aim. To compared the efficacy of turmeric and java turmeric extract on reducing the progression of skeletal muscle atrophy in streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus. Methods. We conducted experimental animal studies with a post test only control group design using 25-30 grams male Swiss mice aged 12 weeks. Diabetes mellitus was induced by streptozotocin (STZ) administration. All 28 samples were randomly divided into 4 groups : control + PBS, control + STZ, STZ + turmeric, and STZ + java turmeric groups. Before treatment, blood glucose and body weight were examined on 3rd day. Blood glucose, body weight, hindlimb muscle weight, and muscle diameter results were examined after treatment (on 21st day). Data was analyzed with statistical software after all procedures were done. Results. STZ + turmeric group showed insignificant decreased in blood sugar levels (p=0.107). Control + STZ group showed significantly reduced hindlimb muscle weight compared to other groups. Hindlimb muscle weight was significantly ameliorated by STZ + turmeric extract (p=0.048). There were no significant improvement on skeletal muscle diameter among groups. Conclusion. The administration of turmeric extract improved hindlimb muscle weight but may not mediated by glucose lowering effect in streptozotocin induced diabetic mice.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus can cause complications including liver damage, which has an impact on increasing levels of SGOT and SGPT in the blood, as well as inflamation and hepatic steatosis. Turmeric (Curcuma domestica) and java turmeric (Curcuma xanthorizza) are known to have high levels of curcumin and xanthorizzol as an antioxidant and proven to improve liver function. Antioxidant therapy in patients with NAFLD is known to improve liver function and histopathological features. The effects of turmeric and java turmeric extract on liver function in streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus mice are still unknown. Objective: Comparing effects of administered turmeric and java turmeric extract on liver function and histopathologic features of  streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus mice. Method: Research design Post Test Only Control Group Design are used. Male swiss mice around 25-30 gram are used. Streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus mice with a total samples (n = 20) divided into 4 groups, Control+PBS, Control+STZ, STZ+Turmeric, and STZ+Java Turmeric (an = 5). Blood glucose, weight, SGOT, SGPT levels and histopathologic features including percentage of inflamation and hepatic steatosis were examined at day 21. All the research data were analyzed using statistics program. Result: Turmeric and java turmeric extract cannot significantly reduce blood glucose level. Administration of java turmeric extract significantly reduce SGPT level against control+STZ group (84,12±17,53 vs. 36,3±27,4 u/L, p=0,018). Administration of turmeric extract significantly reduce hepatic cell inflamation against control+STZ group (30(26-68) vs. 20(15-30)%, p=0,035). Conclusion: Each turmeric and java turmeric extract can improve liver fuction and decreasing hepatic cell inflamation on streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus mice, but may not mediated by decreasing blood glucose level.

Abstract

BackgroundNasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignancy with a high incidence in Indonesia. Recent studies had found several factors that influence the incidence and prognosis of NPC including age, sex, and histopathological type. This study aimed to determine the relationship between age and sex with the histopathological type of NPC.MethodsSubjects were NPC patients diagnosed by the Anatomical Pathology Department of Dr. Kariadi General Hospital Medical Center (RSUP Dr. Kariadi) from 1st January 2017-31st December 2019. Data were collected from the medical record. The relationship between age and sex with the histopathological type of NPC was examined. ResultsThere were 201 NPC patients during 2017-2019 in RSUP Dr. Kariadi. The highest number of NPC incidence was in the range of 54-59 years old. There were more males than females at the ratio of 2.24:1. Undifferentiated non-keratinizing cell carcinoma type NPC was the most common type (90.5% of NPC patients), followed by differentiated non-keratinizing cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma consecutively. Both age and sex had no significant relationship with the histopathological type of NPC (p>0.05).ConclusionThere was no relationship between age and sex with the histopathological type of NPC.
