Abstract

This research is aimed to identify intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of graduate students in English Education Master Program batch 2018. However, motivation became the most dominant factor to build in relation to the academic performance. The research is limited to one research question “what are the factors of graduate students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to build in relation to their academic performance?”. To answer the research question, the researcher employed descriptive qualitative research. The researcher conducted semi-structure interview with nine English Education graduate students. The participants are purposively selected. The result showed that intrinsic motivation is more dominant than extrinsic motivation to build in relation to the academic performance of English education graduate students batch 2018. In intrinsic motivation, the initial purpose or goal-oriented of English education graduated students batch 2018 for entering the college is the most dominant factor in order to build in relation to the academic performance. In extrinsic motivation, the role of supportive peers is higher than other characteristics of extrinsic motivation.

Abstract

Having a purpose of providing all Indonesian students with cheap but qualified textbooks, the e-textbooks should be culturally inclusive, which are able to make the students engage with the texts, and later be motivated to learn. Ena (2013) and Wulandari (2019) found cultural biases in English e-textbooks for senior high schools in Indonesia, which could demotivate students from certain cultural groups, which were underrepresented or represented unfairly. Thus, aiming to elaborate to what extent diversity is represented in the action verbs of the e-textbooks studied, qualitative content analysis was chosen for this study. The reseachers were the main instruments, followed by categorizations and interraters. The results showed there was ethnicity bias. There was no Melanesian animal subjects using action verbs at all in all the e-textbooks and Melanesian human subjects never dominated any e-textbook, while Foreign subjects, who in reality are less in number than the Melanesian, dominated the e-textbook for grade X. Since there was ethnicity bias in the e-textbooks, all the parties involved in the creation of the e-textbooks should either vary the writer team’s ethnicities or vary the texts’ cultural settings and make them in line with the population rank of ethnicities in Indonesia.

Abstract

Reflective pedagogy is a method dealing with a teaching methodology which is done based on a certain spiritualilty. It is important to study the implementation of reflective pedagogy because it helps the students to excel as fully human persons who own competence, compassion, and conscience. This study observes the implementation of reflective pedagogy in Advanced Reading and Writing Class. This research aims to find out the perceptions of the students on the process and the effects of the implementation. The writers employed survey to collect the data. The findings revealed that in general, the students had positive perceptions on the process and the effects of implementing Reflective pedagogy in Advanced Critical Reading and Writing class. The implementation of reflective pedagogy had been successful in developing students’ competence, conscience, and compassion. However, based on the interview, students’ conscience was developed to a limited extent.

Abstract

Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness unveils a story about a journey to the inner selfto find the mysteries of human mind. The way the writer presents his story is veryintriguing in that he makes of use of many foreshadows and symbols. Abstract

This research explores the use of debate activities which are implemented in an Indonesian high school. The aim of this research was to find out students’ perception on the use of debate activities in improving students’ speaking skills. The participants of this research were eight students participating in a debate extracurricular club in a public school. It was a descriptive-qualitative research. The data were collected through observations, questionnaires, and interviews. There were three observations in the debate activities. After that, the researchers distributed the questionnaires to the students. Interviews were conducted with eight students. The research result showed that debate activities enriched students’ vocabulary, improved students’ confidence, and helped students to become better public speakers.DOI : doi.org/10.24071/llt.2018.Suppl2102

Abstract

This research attempts to discover the identities of pre-service teachers in a private university in Yogyakarta, in relation to their positioning of their students. In addition, this research also aims to study to what extent positioning can construct identities of the pre-service teachers. The participants of this research were two pre-service teachers of a private university in Yogyakarta. The data were obtained through interview. The findings of this research first showed that the pre-service teachers perceived various identities in relation to positioning of their students. However, it was found that there were different identities between the two participants even though they faced similar problems. Last, positioning might have a force for the pre-service teachers in constructing their identities.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2019.030102

Abstract

Many English learners use English Teaching Channels on YouTube as an alternative source of learning. Most of those channels were organized by Indonesian teachers. The qualities of the teaching presentations on these channels are varied. Inappropriate use of vocabulary, inaccurate grammar, and mispronunciations are often found in these channels. This research attempts to study the inaccurate pronunciations of the English teachers. The study is deemed necessary due to the fact that learners consider online English teachers as good language model and as an alternative to access English learning materials. The result of the study shows that there are nine types of English vowels that are pronounced inaccurately by the teachers. Most of them are absent in Indonesian vowel system. Cautions should be made when using English Teaching channels on YouTube and some suggestions for Indonesian English teachers are presented.

Abstract

This research discusses how teachers’ emotion regulation helps them construct their professional identity. To be specific, the emotion regulation studied is around teaching pre-school students. The emotion regulation investigated covers the teachers’ behavior in the classroom setting when they are dealing with little children. The research question of this study is “How teachers’ identity is constructed especially in teaching pre-school students?”.  Theories related to emotion competence, emotion regulation, and teacher identity were also reviewed in this paper. In conducting the research, teachers from one of English courses in Yogyakarta becomes the participant. The researcher uses the Critical Incident Technique (CIT). Many factors such as teaching goals, commitment, particular meaningful experiences become the main consideration in formulating the questions asked in the interview section. Actions such as the distribution of questionnaires and interviews are conducted in order to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher presents the findings narratively based on the result of the questionnaire and the interview.
