This article aims to analyze the confusion of information, uncertainty in the situation, and human puzzlement have overshadowed the actions of Indonesian citizens throughout 2020 until the end of January 2021 in line with the pandemic outbreak which have not yet ended and still cannot be predicted when it will end. Volatility, uncertainty, problems of complexity and ambiguity of the choices are conditions that have been described by the VUCA concept. Covid-19, which has infected more than one million people in the country, has caused a lot of excitement in various domains: economic, political, social, cultural, and various other aspects of life. By conducting a literature review from March 2020 to January 2021 and analyzing secondary data from Twitter and distributing short questionnaires through Google Form on August 2020, as 969 respondents in Java, Bali, Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara dan Papua Islands the authors found that the VUCA era facilitates various complexities in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. The clumsy policies create uncertainty way in the process of social transformation towards society who cares about health protocols. Some of the solutions offered by Bennet and Lemoine (2014) or Aura Codreanu (2016) are still insufficient to manage the changes that occur towards a better life. This article contributes ideas related to social action about new social care, togetherness, and responsibility for realizing a new normal life.

Abstract

This article analyzes the adaptive science communication model in the VUCA era. Previously, the model of science communication developed by scientific institutions and journalists in Indonesia tended to be challenging to understand by the public. Finally, in the development of technology, the model of science communication developed marked by the emergence of various creators who utilize social media. Nevertheless, due to dynamic conditions, the development of science communication models has not been fully adaptive. In previous studies, these conditions due to dynamic challenges due to the lack of public confidence in science and community participation to curate science tend to be slow in the rapid dissemination of information. This study uses a qualitative approach with case studies of digital data analysis. This study shows that the science communication model can develop more adaptively during disruptive conditions with innovations in social media from the form of presentation and inviting cooperation with other parties, as well as to conduct transformative strategies by building organizational resilience, developing valid information, restructuring, and conducting experiments following organizational capabilities.

Abstract

New norms and social institutions have emerged in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic and in many ways have replaced the previously considered good order. The foreign phrase which is currently a term has been agreed upon by all parties as an invitation and a word of hope - new normal. Through literature study, this article reviews the fact that there have been institutional changes in various aspects of life because of the pandemic faced by the community for more than a year. By conducting a study of the results of research and internal monitoring of the Covid-19 Task Force and supported by secondary data, this article discusses three levels of social interaction structure that are interconnected and influence each other. At first the pandemic brought shocks that caused negative effects on almost all aspects of life, but in the course of time the difficult conditions gave various optimism to rearrange existing institutions to be more relevant to the contemporary context full of change. Doubts, incoherence, and weak aspects of government institutions are the cause of the continued spread of the pandemic. The legitimacy of the policy is the key to stopping the pandemic as well as institutional restructuring.

This study analyzes the transformation of science communication conducted by media startups in the VUCA era in Indonesia. In the information age, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, people are increasingly dependent on educational needs. Nevertheless, there are challenges of information explosion that are too dynamic and less effective. As a result, media startups have implemented science communication innovations to open public access to science. Previous studies have acknowledged science communication models using visual literacy approaches and using narrative explanations. Therefore, the model faces significant challenges such as information uncertainty, establishing a science communication ecosystem, and ambiguity due to cultural change. Employing qualitative content analysis methods, this article found that media startups face the biggest challenges in developing science communication. On the other hand, the VUCA era can be a driving tool for media startups to conduct adaptive social transformation in the field of science communication.

Abstract

Nowadays, Community-Based Organisation (CBO) has been admitted as a more successful activity to empower the community than other organisations, such as Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). This article aims to emphasise how activism of the Forum of Indonesian Migrant Workers or the Forum Warga Buruh Migran (FWBM), as a CBO initiated by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) at the grassroots level, works to empower ex-Indonesian migrant workers and their families in their areas of origin. This article used the qualitative methodology of the CBO framework and the perspective of community empowerment with a case study in Cilacap Regency, Central Java. Primary data was collected by in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, while secondary data was collected by literature review. The data was processed using content analysis techniques. This research found that the activism of  FWBM has been manifested in four holistic community empowerment programmes. Through these programmes, ex Indonesian Migrant Workers and their families can improve their quality of life. They can be more empowered, economically independent, and wealthier. However, the FWBM still has limitations in terms of volunteers and financial resources to support sustainable activities.

Abstract

Television often commodifies content in nowadays’ digital era, especially those related to the personal life of celebrities. In fact, this violates the norms stated in the provisions of P3SPS Chapter 9th article 13th paragraph 2nd regarding Respect for Privacy Rights and has the potential to make audiences ignore social realities that exist in society. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach which aims to show the commodification of the personal life content of artists on television in the digital era by using the concept of struggle for recognition and institutions from market from meaning. Through literature review by collecting observational data on television and YouTube content with the theme of the artist's personal life, as well as secondary data in the form of online news searches, documents and journals to complement the findings. The results of the study show that the greater the ability of each actor to become a prosumer and reach the popularity, the greater the opportunity to commodify personal content facilitated by the broadcasting industry and other institutions for economic purposes. This can be seen in various television stations which commodify the content of the personal lives of artists by showing wedding processions, 7 monthly processions, and aqiqah with quite high intensity in 2021, as well as other artists' daily activities in infotainment by combining content from the artist's Youtube channel. This phenomenon shifts existing values which makes the KPI institution soften in responding to it.

Abstract

This study explains how capitals shape the survival strategy of freelance creative workers who work in a precarious situations in the commercial audiovisual industry. This study was conducted with a qualitative approach. Through in-depth interviews with freelance creative workers, online observations, and digital data collection, this study shows that the survival strategy of the workers can be explained further based on capital analysis focused on social capital and knowledge capital as the recognized and valued capital in the field. Both the social and knowledge capital of the workers, accompanied by workers' capacity to accumulate and convert them continuously, are relevant in shaping workers' survival strategy, which leads to the establishment of a positive reputation and capacity enhancement. This eventually leads them to gain employability and occupy strategic positioning, reflected in high bargaining power and work opportunities in the industry sustainably, as it becomes their alternative job security to survive amidst precarious conditions
