The study aims at exploring the implementation of International Service Learning (ISL) among Islamic Higher Education Institutions in Indonesia, its challenges, and strategies to cope with them. To explore the phenomena, six Islamic Higher Education Institutions (IHEI) implementing the ISL in Indonesia were purposively selected as sample of the study. A face-to-face interview with the respondents and document analysis towards relevant resources were employed as the main data collection techniques. After analysing the data and, later, triangulated them, the following findings emerge. First, the implementation of ISL was structurally carried out on the basis of preparation, implementation, and evaluation. Second, employing a framework of ISL implementation, coined by Baker-Boosamra, most recommeded steps were followed. Third, ISL among IHEIs encounter some challenges to cope with. Some could be successfully resolved; some others remain unresolved. The study recommends that ISL among IHEIs be properly managed by formulating specific objectives. The formulated objectives serve as the standard of ISL successful implantation.

Abstract

Irony is figurative language that is frequently employed in literary works as a way to add interest to the text. Irony is a figure of speech employed in a sentence so that the intended meaning is different from the real meaning of the word, according to various dictionaries. One of the historical occurrences in the United States was racial segregation, which was intended to be a diplomatic separation between white society and African American society but instead supplied the same level of discrimination. Considering how the history of discrimination is depicted in play through figurative language: irony, the researcher conducted a study that focused on August Wilson's play entitled Fences (1984). This study used the theory of irony from Perrine (1994), to analyze the types of irony found in Fences and several sources of journals and history books to describe the history of racial segregation in the United States of America that occurred. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, and the main data is the script of the drama Fences. The research result showed the type of irony in this playscript are able represent the racial segregation in United States. In conclusion, Wilson as a playwright effectively used irony in almost every round of his drama and this irony was also able to describe the situation of racial segregation that had occurred in United States.

Abstract

This research investigates how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students cope with ill-formed source-language sentences in English-to-Indonesian sight interpreting. In line with the objective, students’ interpretations of sentences with linguistic errors were collected as the data via video-based observation and qualitatively analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that most students were aware of the occurrence of typographical errors in the assigned source documents and able to sight interpret those parts as targeted, especially when dealing with mix-up letters and middle-letter omission. However, many of them seemed to have difficulties in identifying the occurrence of grammatical errors, such as subject-verb disagreement and improper use of a certain part of speech and punctuation errors, such as the presence of unnecessary punctuations, which then leading to inaccurate interpretations. It is assumed that the primary cause of these interpretation problems is attributed to students’ limited understanding of the source texts, highlighting the critical need for enhanced fast-reading comprehension skills among students.
