Abstract

This research was about the students' ability in writing a procedure text, with the topic of how to make a cake. This study aimed to determine the level of students' ability to write procedure texts seen from the generic structure and language feature of the text. The research design was the descriptive research. The population of this study was all students of class XI, majoring in Culinary of SMKN 9 Padang. The population was 122 students from 8 classes, XI K1, XI K2, XI K3, XI K4, XI K5, XI K6, XI K7, and XI K8.  The sample was taken by random sampling technique so that the number of samples obtained was 29 samples. The instrument used was a test of procedure text writing for 90 minutes, with topics determined by the students. The students’ writings were analyzed using procedural text writing rubric related to the generic structure and language feature of the text. Based on this research, students' ability in writing procedure texts was in category 3 (good). Although the ability of students to write procedure texts was in category 3 (good) by looking to the generic structure and language feature of the text, there are several parts of the text that students have not understood how to write them. Students were expected to understand how to write a good procedure text by paying attention to the generic structure and language feature of the text.

Abstract

The teacher can use small group discussion in teaching writing procedure text in the teaching and learning process. By applying this method, the students can get interest and understanding procedure text well. The objective of this paper is to help the students to organize their ideas and write their ideas in a good order. Besides, the teacher also has to give more time for teaching writing especially in teaching text in order to increase the students’ ability in writing procedure text. Writing procedure texts through small group discussion bring the students to new kind of situation. It would help both the teacher and students to revise the students’ writing and made writing more fun than the way it used to be.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing the errors made by the second year English department students in using passive voice in the Academic Writing Subject. Specifically, it was aimed at finding the types of errors and the causes of errors made by the students in their academic writings. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The sample of this research was the K3 students consisting of 19 students. The sample was taken based on the cluster sampling technique. Then, the students’ academic writings were used as the source of the data. The data collection was taken by using the theory of Surface Structure Taxonomy proposed by Dulay et al. (1982). Related to the causes of errors, the theory proposed by James and Brown was used to study the causes of errors made by the students. The findings show that there were 367 errors made by the students. The highest type of errors made by the students was 216 omission errors (59%) and followed by 104 misformation errors (28%), 34 addition errors (9%), and 13 misordering errors (4%). It was found that the major causes of errors were interlingual and intralingual factors. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the students did the four types of errors.

Abstract

Abstract Writing is one of the skills that must be mastered by junior high school students in English. However, there are some common problems found in schools such as the lack of students’ ability to express their ideas, the lack of vocabulary of the students, the lack of understanding of students in systematic writing and the lack of students' comfort in teaching writing because of the methods used by teachers in the classroom is boring and monotonous for the students. This paper is aimed at introducing how to teach writing using photograph sequences. Photograph Sequences is one of the teacher's approaches for teaching writing. Using  Photograph Sequences, students are expected to be more motivated in writing recount texts and with guidance from teachers. It will make it easier for the students to understand the elements of recount texts and make it easier for them to explore the ideas that will be written.Keywords: Writing, Recount Text, Photograph sequence

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low ability of students of SMAN 2 Sawahlunto in writing. The use of teacher’s instructional strategy is not effective yet in improving students’ writing ability. Therefore it is necessary to apply a good and interesting strategy to increase the ability of students in writing. In this study, researcher used peer feedback strategy in writing hortatory exposition text. The aim of this study was to figure out the impact of peer feedback strategy on students' ability in writing hortatory exposition text. This research was an experimental research. The population was students of grade XI of SMAN 2 Sawahlunto in the academic year 2016/2017 which consists of five classes. The sample was taken by using cluster sampling technique consists of two classes: XI IPA 1 class as experimental group and XI IPA 3 class as control group. The total sample was 38 students. The data were collected through a writing test. The datas of this research were post-test writing from both groups of samples that analyzed using t-test formula. It was found that t-observed was 2.13, while t-table was 2.03 which means t-observed > t-table at the level of significance 0.05. Based on the results of this calculation, it can be concluded that the use of peer feedback strategy can give a better impact on students' writing ability. In other words, the results of this study showed the hypothesis that the students who were taught by using peer feedback strategy had better writing skills than students who were taught by using the conventional strategy by teachers.

Abstract

AbstractPenelitian ini adalah penelitian deskripstif yang menggambarkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan kalimat-kalimat dalam recipe text dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Adapun populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa S1 Tata Boga, Jurusan Ilmu Kesejahteraan Keluarga, Fakultas Pariwisata dan Perhotelan, tahun akademik 2014 di Universitas Negeri Padang dan subjek dipilih dengan menggunakan metode total sampling. Masalah yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana tingkat kemampuan mahasiswa menerjemahkan recipe text dan apa saja masalah yang mereka hadapi dalam menerjemahkan recipe text. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan dan apa saja masalah yang dihadapi dalam menerjemahkan recipe text. Adapun instrument yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah translation test. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan 0 (0%) dari mahasiswa mempunyai kemampuan menerjemah bagus, 40 (93,02%) berkemampuan kurang bagus, dan 3 (6,97%) mempunyai kemampuan tidak bagus. Dari data tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa Tata Boga, Jurusan Ilmu Kesejahteraan Keluarga, Fakultas Pariwisata dan Perhotelan, UNP mempunyai kemampuan kurang bagus dalam menerjemah. Oleh karena itu, mereka perlu banyak diajarkan cara menerjemah dengan baik agar mereka dapat menghasilkan terjemahan yang akurat.

Abstract

Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan tentang bagaimana penggunaan Memory Card game dalam pengajaran vocabulary untuk young learners. Dalam makalah ini dijelaskan langkah-langkah yang harus diterapkan oleh guru dalam mengajarkan vocabulary kepada siswa dengan menggunakan Memory Card game, terutama untuk young learners di tingkat Sekolah Dasar (SD). Hal ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kesulitan-kesulitan yang dialami oleh guru dalam mengajarkan vocabulary kepada siswa di dalam kelas, seperti memilih aktifitas yang sesuai dengan karakteristik dan perkembangan siswa. Memory Card game adalah salah satu aktifitas yang tepat yang dapat diterapkan oleh guru dalam mengajarkan vocabulary kepada siswa yang dapat dimainkan secara berkelompok sehingga dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa untuk berkompetensi dengan siswa lainnya. Memory Card game ini tentang bagaimana siswa bisa menemukan picture-word pair yang tepat dengan cepat sesuai dengan vocabulary yang sudah diperkenalkan sebelumnya. Memory Card game ini dapat meningkatkan kerjasama anggota kelompok dan dapat mengasah ingatan siswa. Kelompok tercepat yang dapat menyelesaikan picture-word pair adalah pemenang dari game ini dan akan mendapatkan hadiah dari guru.

Abstract

The study was aimed to find out the ability of the student of the second year English Department in using English grammatical collocations.The population were the students of the second year English Department at UniversitasNegeri Padang. The samples were the students which take Essay Writing subject with academic year 2017/2018. The samples were taken by random sampling. They are 37 students from 5 classes.The level demonstrates that the use of English collocations are in the level of very good. Based on the quantitative data, the use of English grammatical collocations are 90.32% for correct collocations and 9.68% for incorrect collocations. English grammatical collocations are divided into 8 categories. They are G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G6, G7, and G8. In addition, the use of English grammatical collocations for G1 is 91.67% for correct collocations and 8.33% for incorrect collocations. G2 shows 70% for correct collocations and 30% for incorrect collocations. G3 shows 94.01% for correct collocations and 5.99% for incorrect collocations. G4 and G5 show 100% for correct collocations. G6 shows 81.12 for correct collocations and 18.88% for incorrect collocations. G7 shows 100% for correct collocations. G8 shows 85.80% for correct collocations and 14.20% for incorrect collocations.

Abstract

Language is the oldest tool of communication which already exists from the first time humans were created. The use of language, at first and with the simplest form, is the form of nonverbal, which is language of symbol, sign, body language, face expression, and gesture forms. However, the study of language as a field of linguistics is the language in the form of words, or can be called as academic language. But, even academic language also has errors in their written conversation. Even less, these errors are done by the academic people itself. Based on the analysis of the data, it can be seen that there are 6 types of conversations occur in WhatsApp Group Chats “SASING UNP” and has 24% of error from total data that analysed was 118 utterances. However, another result of this research proved the hypothesis of researcher, which the dominant conversation happened, was used both verbal and nonverbal.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the origin of Minangkabaunese people’s ancestors shown in the speech “Pasambahan Maanta Marapulai” produced by ELTA Record Bukittinggi. This research discussed about the origin of Minangkabaunese on that video based on myth. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. It was a method that researched an object by explaining it. The researcher collected the supporting data from some books; those are literature books, journals and another books that related with this research. In analyzing the data, researcher described the implicit meaning from the speech of “Pasambahan Maanta Marapulai”. It was the speech from the groom’s family and the bride’s family. The result of this research told that the origin of Minangkabaunese was the third son of Sultan Iskandar Zulkarnain named Maharaja Diraja. He sailed through Hindia Ocean. He found a piece of land in the west of Sumatera which he called Perca island or known as Minangkabau. Maharaja Diraja saw Mount Merapi, and then his group and he went to the top of that mount. They built a village there firstly named Siligundi Nan Baseloin Pariangan Padang Panjang. Based on the analysis of the story about the origin of Minangkabaunese in the speech”Pasambahan Maanta Marapulai”, the researcher concluded that the story was the myth.
