Abstract

Recently, timber  estate or plantation forest plays an important role on wooden based industries.  However, the  plantation timber  quality is relatively low.  Some treatments  have been developed to improve  its low quality, such as preservation with CCB (Chromate Copper Boron) and impregnation with plastic compounds. This study is to compare the durability of timber treated with  plastic and CCB,  non-treated from plantation forest timber  as well  as from natural  forest. The plantation timber  studied were  jeungjing  (Paraserianthes falcataria), damar  (Agathis sp.), pinus  (Pinus merkusii), and rubberwood (Hevea brasilliensis). Non-treated timbers that usually used for marine construction were ulin (Eusideroxylon zwageri), jati/teak  (Tectona grandis), laban (Vitex pubescens) and merbau  (Instia bijuga). After  6 and 12 months,  the results showed that CCB  preserved  timber  were  more durable  than plastic  impregnated timber  and non- treated timber. Wood samples were mostly attacked by marine borer organisms from the family of  Pholadidae  and Teredinidae. The experiment results revealed the possibility of using those plantation forest timber species for marine construction purposes.

Abstract

Kayu kulit manis (Cinnamomum burmannii BL) merupakan salah satu komoditas potensial untuk dikembangkan. Kulit kayunya memiliki bau yang khas, banyak digunakan untuk berbagai keperluan, seperti penyedap rasa makanan atau kue. Bagian batang kulit manis tersebut berupa kayu belum dimanfaatkan optimal selain untuk kayu bakar. Pada proses pengolahan dolok kulit manis menjadi kayu gergajian dihasilkan limbah berupa serbuk dan slab yang dapat dijadikan serpih sebagai bahan baku pembuatan papan partikel. Penelitian untuk mengetahui sifat papan partikel yang dibuat dari limbah tersebut dilakukan dengan cara; partikel kulit manis baik dalam bentuk serbuk gergaji atau serpih, masing-masing dikeringkan dalam oven pada suhu 70 - 90 C sampai mencapai kadar air sekitar 5%, kemudian dicampur dengan serbuk gergaji (sebagai partikel halus) atau terdiri hanya dari partikel saja atau serpih (sebagai partikel kasar), lalu dicetak menjadi lembaran papan partikel menggunakan perekat urea formaldehida (UF), dikempa panas selama 10 menit pada suhu 140 C dengan tekanan 25 kg/cm2. Papan partikel yang dibuat berukuran 30 cm x 30 cmx 1,5 cm dengan kerapatan target masing-masing 0,6, 0,7 dan 0,8 g/cm3. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kadar air, kerapatan, pengembangan tebal, keteguhan lentur, keteguhan rekat internal dan kuat memegang sekrup papan partikel yang dihasilkan sudah memenuhi persyaratan Standar Nasional Indonesia, kecuali untuk kerapatan 0,6 g/cm3dan 0,7 g/cm3yang dibuat dari campuran serpih dan serbuk gergaji.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to investigate basic and drying properties of three wood species from Indonesia, i.e. kuda (Lannea coromandelica Merr.), waru (Hibiscus tiliaceus L. and mindi besar (Melia dubia Cav.). The basic properties include density, shrinkages, modulus of rupture (MOR), compression parallel to grain (C//), wood strength and anatomical structures. Meanwhile, the drying properties included drying time and drying defects. The initial-final temperature and humidity for each species was based on defects that resulted from high temperature drying trial.The results showed that the drying properties were significantly affected by wood anatomical structure. The initial-final drybulb temperature and wetbulb depression   for kuda wood are 50 -70ºC and 3-30ºC respectively, while the corresponding figures for waru wood are 65-80ºC and 6-30ºC, and for mindi besar wood are 55-80ºC and 4-30ºC. These drying schedules, however, still need further trial prior to their implementation in the factory-scale operation. All wood species studied have density and considerable strength recommended in their use for light medium construction purposes. Mindi besar wood has decorative appearance so it is suitable for furniture.

Abstract

The disadvantage of  fast-growing species is  that they have inferior physical and mechanical properties. Polystyrene impregnation can be applied to improve physical and mechanical properties. Wood samples, which were dried  until 10% moisture content were put into impregnating tank and vacuum pressured  at 20-mm Hg  for  two hours. During  the gradual release of  vacuum, styrene monomers,  vinyl acetate  monomers  and  terburyl-peroxide catalyst was streamed  into  the tank. Afterwards, the pressure inside the tank was allowed to decrease to 500 mm Hg and kept for 60 minutes. Wood samples which had been impregnated were subsequently immersed in water, then wrapped in aluminum foils and put in the oven for 24 hours at 60°C. The samples were then tested for the polymer loading and their physical and mechanical properties. The results showed that the polymer loadings in wood plastics with the species  of origin (i.e. consecutively sengon, pine and rubber wood) were 118%, 72% and 44%, respectively. Impregnation with polystyrene  (copolymer of styrene and vinyl acetate monomers) could improve the physical and mechanical properties of wood plastics, i.e.  specific gravity, moisture content, water absorption,  shrinkage/ swelling, compression parallelto the wood grain, MOR and MOE. Greater  use of vinyl acetate decreased physical and mechanical properties.

Abstract

Pasokan kayu dewasa ini umumnya berkualitas rendah dan berukuran kecil. Hal ini menyulitkan dalam penggunaan kayu berukuran besar seperti pada struktur gelagar, pintu dan lain sebagainya. Aplikasi teknologi laminasi bisa digunakan dalam mengatasi masalah tersebut. Dalam penelitian ini dilakukan pengujian sifat fisik dan mekanik terhadap kayu lamina yang terbuat dari bilah kayu mangium dan sengon. Pengujian ini dimaksudkan mengevaluasi kemungkinan penggunaannya sebagai bahan baku kayu pertukangan dan kayu konstruksi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa berdasarkan nilai kerapatan, MOE dan MOR kayu lamina campuran mangium dan sengon dengan susunan 6 lapis bentuk B1 mencapai nilai paling tinggi dibandingkan dengan bentuk lainnya yaitu berturut-turut 0,48 gram/cm3, 91.894 kg/cm2   dan 441 kg/cm2. Karakteristik ini memenuhi standar Jepang untuk penggunaan kayu lamina struktural dan dapat digunakan sebagai kayu pertukangan dan konstruksi ringan.

Abstract

Wood  plastic  composites   (WPC) were made  by impregnating  monomer   and  vinyl acetate monomer  with addition  of  terbutyl peroxide  catalyst. This laboratory  scale experiment  aimed at looking into  the durability of  WPC polymerized  at varying mixture  ratios between  styrene and vinyl acetate monomers,  compared  to the natural   durability of  the corresponding   wood  treated with impralit CKB.  In this  regard,  wood  samples were dried until 10 % moisture  content,   and then  they were put in the tank under  20 mm Hg vacuum was being released.   Styrene  monomer with vinyl acetate  addition was flown to the tank, and the wood  samples were immersed  in the monomer   for  24 hours.   Furthermore,   the wood  samples  were taken  out,  and  wrapped  with aluminum  foil, and then were   put in the oven for 24 hours at 60° C. The  wraps were opened, and the samples were  conditioned.   The  samples were tested  to dry wood  termite  (Cryptotermes cynocephalus Light.),  and the Subterranean  termite (Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren.).  Investigated factors were (i) wood species consisting of sengon, pine, and rubber wood, and (ii) ratio of styrene to vinyl acetate. i.e.  90/10;  80/20;  70/30;  and 60/40.   For comparison,  each wood samples  treated with  Impralit  CKB  3% and untreated   (unpolymerized)    wood  samples  (a control)  were  also prepared.  The  results showed  that polymer  loadings  in the  sengon, pine and rubber  wood were 118 %, 72 % and  44%  respectively. Increasing  of  vinyl acetate  to styrene  tended  to decrease polymer loading,  the addition  of  10% gave 96% polymer  loading,  20% gave 108%,  30% gave 71 %, and 30% gave 38 % respectively.  It appeared that treatment  of styrene with low vinyl acetate additions  (60:40) had resulted  in consecutively  95.67%  and 97.75 % mortality  of  the dry wood termite  and sub subterranean   termite. This implied  that the treatment  might increase the wood resistance  to the wood destroying insect.

Abstract

Jati plus perhutani (JPP) adalah jati (Tectona grandis) yang dikembangkan dengan menggunakan kultur jaringan. Informasi mengenai kualitas kayu jati cepat tumbuh tersebut belum banyak diketahui. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperbaiki sifat inferior agar pemanfaatannya optimal. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa JPP umur sembilan tahun termasuk kriteria kayu bulat kecil (KBK, A.1.), rentan terhadap rayap kayu kering (Cryptotermes cynocephalus) dan rayap tanah (Coptotermes curvignathus). Kayu tersebut setelah diawetkan, kelas awetnya meningkat. Untuk meningkatkan nilai tambah dan manfaatnya, kayu tersebut dibentuk menjadi balok lamina dengan dan tanpa sambungan bentuk jari kemudian dirakit menjadi balok lamina menggunakan perekat campuran fenol-resorsinol- formaldehida dan urea formaldehida. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya sambungan dan pengawetan dengan boraks tidak berpengaruh terhadap modulus elastisitas balok tersebut kecuali pada uji tekan sejajar lamina.

Abstract

Tiga jenis kayu dan kayu kelapa dari Sukaburni, Jawa Barat diuji terhadap penggerek di laut untuk diketahui penurunan sifat fisis dan mekanisnya.Penelitian ini dilakukan di perairan Pulau Rambut dengan contoh uji yang berukuran 5 cm x 5 cm x 106 cm. Contoh  uji direnteng dengan tali plastik dan diamati setelah tiga bulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar contoh uji diserang oleh penggerek di laut, sehingga menurunkan sifat fisis dan mekanisnya. Rasamala yang tidak direndam termasuk dalam kelas kuat II dan setelah direndam menjadi kelas kuat III. Kelapa yang tidak direndam termasuk kelas kuat II-III, setelah direndam menjadi kelas kuat IV Karet  dan nangka yang tidak direndam termasuk kelas III, setelah direndam kekuatan kayu karet menjadi kelas kuat V dan nangka tetap termasuk dalam kelas kuat III
