Abstract

Background: Malnutrition and immunology change in stroke would affect the outcome of the stroke patient. The supplement of the extract of snakehead fish as an alternative is expected could reduce the effect pasca stroke. Objective: This study aims to assess the effect of snakehead fish supplementation on nutritional status, levels of albumin, TLC and TNF-α in stroke patients.Method: This type of study is a quasi-experimental, pre-test post-test group design, by providing treatment to the subject of research and treatment effects were measured and analyzed. Subjects were divided into two groups; a first group which receives 3 x 2 capsule of snakehead fish supplementation as well as diet and nutrition education (intervention group) and the second group that received only diet and education (control group). Results: From the results, it was found that nutritional status, which was obtained by measuring UAC in cases and controls are good (SG ≥ 85%) but no significant differences between them (p=0.914). There are significant differences between albumin levels before and after intervention (p=0.023) with an average increase of 0.2 g/dl, but not in the control group (p=0.931). For TLC values increased in the intervention group (990,5 sel/mm3) and a decrease in the control group (645,03 sel/mm3) with a significant difference in both groups (p=0.034). There was a decrease of TNFα in both group; for cases (mean=-2.91) and controls (mean=-2.58) with significant differences between the two groups (p=0.001).Conclusion: The supplementation of an extract of snakehead fish could increase the albumin and TLC level and decrease the TNFα in stroke patients.

Abstract

Food consumption pattern is known as a determinant factor for nutritional problems among pregnant mothers. This study was intended to assess food consumption and its relationship to anemia in Maros Districts, Indonesia. This study was conducted in two sub-districts and pregnant mothers was randomly selected (n = 200) and proportionally from both districts. Data was collected by train field workers including measurement of hemoglobin, height and weight, 24-hour recall and food frequency questionnaire. Multivariate analyses were performed to see the relationship between food consumption and anemia. It showed that anemia prevalence was 41% whereas mostly in mild and moderate levels (44% and 55% respectively). The most common pattern of food consumption was rice, fish, and some vegetables. However, vegetables and fruit mostly consumed only 3-6 time a week. Energy and protein intakes were only 59% to 72% recommended dietary allowance (RDA) or 1300 kcal and 48 gr respectively. Most vitamin was consumed only around 40% except for vitamin A (76%, 605 RE), folic acid (195%, 1170 ug), and Vitamin B12 (142%, 3,7 ug). However, iron and zinc intakes were only 6.1 gr (17.5% RDA) and 5.9 gr (44% RDA), respectively. Multivariate analyses showed that education duration of mothers, nutritional status, iron tablet intakes, vitamin C, and B6 consumption were significantly related to anemia of pregnant mothers in the study and accounted for 24% (p<0.05). We conclude that food consumption was relatively low and caused lack intakes for both macro and micro nutrients of pregnant mothers in the study. Education and nutritional status of the mothers contributed also to the anemia prevalence.

Abstract

Nutritional problems in children under five are still a public health problem if the prevalence of stunting is> 20%. The prevalence of stunting in general in the world is also a public health problem because it is still 26%. Nationally, the prevalence of stunting in children under five in Indonesia is 37.2%. This means that the problem of nutrition in Indonesia is still a serious public health problem. Meanwhile, the proportion of children under five with stunting is 48.2% in NTT Province, including a critical public health problem. Based on this background, this study aims to determine the determinants of stunting of children 6-24 months in South Central Timor District, East Nusa Tenggara Province. B This research is an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The research was carried out in nine sub-districts of Timor Tengah Selatan Regency. Baduta food consumption data were obtained through consumption recall, while other data were obtained through questionnaires by enumerators. Analysis of nutrients in food using a food processor 2 (FP2). The statistical test used is Chi-Square. The number of respondents studied was 3480 children, with stunting and severe stunting as many as 1416 children (40.7%), most of whom were boys, as many as 1870 children (53.7%), for 12-24 months there were 1916 children, (1%), where the results of the chi square test are significant p <0.05. Education of mothers and fathers, respectively 1827 people (52.5%) and 1754 people (50.4%) with basic education did not complete and graduated from junior high school, with the majority of jobs being mother farmers (83.3%) and fathers (65.0%), most of the socio-economic conditions are low (83.5%). Maternal TB was significant (p = 0.000) as well as parity and birth spacing, the results of the chi-square test were significantly significant, p <0.005, while exclusive breastfeeding was only 596 people (17.1%). Nutritional needs did not reach the Recommended dietary allowance. (RDA) <80% RDA, energy intake (90.3%), protein (82.6%), fat (97.9%) and KH (82.0%). History of diarrhea (17.4%), fever (32.6%), shortness of breath (2.3%), cough (31.0%) and runny nose (29.2%) and the results of the chi-square test were only fever. Significant with p = 0.016. The logistic regression results showed that gender and maternal height were the most associated with stunting nutritional status. The determinant factors of stunting were the child's age, sex, mother's education, maternal occupation, mother's height, parity, birth spacing, protein intake and a history of fever.

Abstract

Obesity is associated with an increased risk of diseases, especially central obesity. Central obesity is a risk factor of glucose intolerance. Glucose intolerance is the beginning of diabetes mellitus. Many factors influence glucose intolerance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cortisol levels and some other factors related glucose intolerance. This study was a cross-sectional study from 12 high schools in Makassar. The analysis for this study was performed with 54 teachers. Characteristic samples, anthropometry, fasting blood glucose (FBG), cortisol were measured for all samples. Blood plasma glucose was measured from venous blood samples. Respondents were mostly female (85.2%), married (87%), bachelor’s degree (79,6%) and Buginesse (66.7%). The average age of respondents was 49.37 years. The results showed a significant relationship formula: between high cortisol levels in respondents who experienced glucose intolerance (p=0.043). Stress variables did not show a significant relationship, but the average score was higher in those who experienced glucose intolerance than those who had normal glucose. The frequency of consumption of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and Body mass index (BMI) did not show a significant relationship with glucose intolerance. Cortisol levels are associated with glucose intolerance in adults with central obesity.
