Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating the oral tradition of genjek Karangasem with the main attempt was to analyze the various functions and meanings of genjek Karangasem. The theory of literary function utilised in the present study was the theory as suggested by Bascom in Sukatman (2011:11) and semiotics theory as suggested by Van Zoest (1993:131). The theory of literary function was utilized to anlyse the function of genjek Karangasem and semiotics theory was used to examine the meaning of genjek Karangasem. The present study was a qualitative study with systematic descriptive analysis which departs from theory to the observation of valid and reliable data. The approach used in this study was a phenomenological approach that moved from the phenomenon of language used in genjek Karangasem. The implication of this study was expected to provide benefits to the development of linguistics studies and the understanding of function and meaning of the other oral traditions as well as other literary works for the sake of the betterness of social life improvement.  The present study revealed that the function of genjek Karangasem were functions to remember the past, education, entertainment, ethnic solidarity, social control, social protest, and the religious function, meanwhile, the meanings found in genjek Karangasem, such as the meaning of love, ritual, recognition of the existence of social stratification, and the meaning of the collective consciousness. Abstract

Teacher competence and teacher welfare are essential aspects to successfully improve education quality. Assessment instrument models for teacher competence and teacher welfare therefore important to be developed to meet the required standards. This study aims at developing a set of assessment instrument models for teacher competence, teacher welfare, and educational quality improvement. The study was designed for two years adopting the Research and Development method employing 4D models consisting of Define, Design, Develop and Disseminate. The result of this study is in the form of assessment models for teacher competence, teacher welfare, and quality of education which have been validated by selected teachers, principals, and school supervisors. This assessment models have strong beneficial significance to the improvement of education quality and teacher professional development.

Abstract

Competence is one of the absolute requirements that teachers must have. Having adequate competencies, a teacher will be able to perform his duties as a professional educator and an agent of change. Therefore, education is not only aimed to equip children with various sciences and technology but also variety of life skills. Teachers are professional educators who have been trusted by society to educate and guide children. As a professional educator, a teacher must fulfill teaching requirements that has been regulated. Teachers should have four competences, i.e. pedagogy, personality, professional, and social competence. These competences are needed because the duties and tasks of the teachers to develop their students’ knowledge and skill as well as to build their students’ character. Competent teachers are found to have the ability to develop their students properly as suggested by educational curriculum in order they can survive in facing the global advancement of living.

Abstract

Creating an English learning environment in which learners are highly motivated is sometimes very challenging for EFL teachers. Folktales can be useful for facilitating learners in their competence of English language and also for enhancing their cross-cultural awareness. In the field of language teaching, the richness and potential of folktales seems to have been under-utilized in today’s language classes. This paper explores how folktales can be used as a medium of improving students’ reading skills and major benefits in using folktales for teaching English.  A classroom action research was employed to attain the purpose of this study in which two cyclic learning sessions were conducted to improve English learners’ reading skills. Several selected Indonesian folktales were intensively utilized in reading classes. This result of this study indicates that use of folktales by EFL teachers could improve student’ reading skill and widen their vocabulary and at the same time, culture is acquired by the students.

Abstract

This research was conducted at SMK in Bali which aims to develop a model of communicative English test for SMK Tourism in Bali by involving students of English Education Study Program as the final project of language tesing. This research is conducted for two years using Research and Development method so that the developed product can be believed to be correct and accurate. The research was conducted because the crucial important problem faced by SMK Tourism teachers in assessing the ability of communicative English students so that teachers and students know their true ability in English communication in order to improve the quality of learning so that students will be ready to work in various tourism industries. In the first year, research was focused on establishing a communicative English test model based on analyzing an English test that already exists at SMK Tourism in Bali and then designing a model of Communicative English test for vocational students in Bali.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the factors that influence the lack of speaking skill in management students at Hindu Indonesia University in the second semester of 2019. The subject of this study consists of 100 students. This study is descriptive qualitative in the form of a case study. The data were collected through questionnaires and students' interviews. The result showed some factors influence the lack of speaking skill such as the students to feel more enthusiasm when they do the active activity like playing games, explaining something or telling a story; the use of Indonesian or Balinese language during English class could hold up the process of speaking; the limitation in students to speak English because of the lack of vocabulary. The information gathered that the teacher should use more activity and strategy to make students more enthusiastic in speaking during English class

Abstract

Assessing is a process of giving score and evaluation of students’ learning achievement to provide the opportunity to plan further learning improvement to attain the learning standard determined by the curriculum. This study dealt with analyzing students’ writing ability to enhance their micro and macro writing. An ex-post facto research design was employed to establish reliable findings. The research instrument that was used to collect the data was in the form of a productive test. Students were assigned to construct a descriptive paragraph consisting of at least seven sentences. The result of this study showed that: there were 5% of students who achieved an excellent score in writing a descriptive paragraph, 37.5% of students attained good achievement, 30% of students attained sufficient achievement, 17.5% students obtained insufficient achievement, 10% students were in poor achievement. This finding suggests that there still many students found difficulty in writing unified and coherent paragraphs.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a very important language skill to support our life in many aspects. In education sectors, reading comprehension is an ability for the students to continually develop their skills in various subjects. Consequently, assessment of students' reading comprehension is absolutely essential to be conducted to systematically collect information and making inferences about the ability of a student or the quality of the learning process. This study revealed that students' reading comprehension is at a sufficient level and students still experienced some challenges in reading comprehension. This study implies that more intensive reading comprehension activities should be carried out and better learning strategies should be employed by the teachers in teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

Writing is a complex process in which the process of putting the ideas and organizing the grammatical sentences into written statements as a means of communication. The study dealt with analyzing text writing acquisition by pre-service teachers in Bali. The samples were 60 pre-service teachers who are currently taking teachers training in the English language education study program. The participants were determined using a random sampling method with a lottery system. The data were collected by administering an essay text writing instrument. The obtained data were analyzed by using a norm-referenced measure of five standard values showed that 0.00% of the samples got excellent achievement of recount text writing ability; 41.67% of the samples got good achievement; 30.00% of the samples got sufficient achievement; 18.33% of the samples got the insufficient achievement, and 10.00% of the samples got the poor achievement. This indicated that 71.67% of the samples who were categorized successfully in text writing and the other 28.33% samples were categorized unsuccessful as they were below the sufficient achievement. This finding implies that further serious training in text writing should be undertaken by pre-service teachers.

Abstract

The coronavirus pandemic has affected the lives of people across the globe which forced students to work from home. In the education sector, students are strongly suggested to stay home and study from home. Consequently, online learning becomes a necessary learning process during the outbreak of COVID-19. Students are expected to be active in engaging themselves in learning. Suddenly they are confronted with many terminologies concerning classroom interaction. Many students found some of the terminologies confusing. This study was intended to find out the students' acquisition of COVID-19 terminologies which are commonly used in classroom interaction. The study found that students have inadequate comprehension of COVID-19 terminologies although they are widely exposed to terminologies in their daily life. Only common terminologies were comprehended appropriately. This study implies that a learning program should be provided to improve students' acquisition of COVID-19 terminologies
