Abstract

Background: Camellia sinensis, Linn. var. Assamica leaves contain tannin that have been known to have anthelmintic effect. This study aimed to determine the effect of Camellia sinensis, Linn. var. Assamica leaves extract toward death time of Ascaris suum, Goeze. Methods: The study was a laboratory experimental research using the post-test only controlled group design. Subjects were Ascaris suum, Goeze. The sampling technique used was purposive random sampling. Subjects were divided into 7 groups, each group using 4 worms, replication performed 5 times. Saline solution was used in negative control group, pirantel pamoate 5 mg/ml was used in positive control group, while the treatment group used Camellia sinensis, Linn. var. Assamica leaves extract concentration of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90%. Worms immersed in the test solution at 25 ml and incubated at 37C. Observations were made every 1 hour and counted dead times of all worms. Data were analyzed with regression linier and probit analysis. Results: Observations of total deaths mean time Ascaris suum, Goeze negative control for 48 hours, the positive control 1 hours 10 minutes, the concentration of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% for 10 hours 24 minutes, 9 hours 12 minutes, 7 hours 12 minutes, 5 hours 12 minutes and 4 hours. Linear regression test results show that the variation of the concentration affects long worm death. Probit analysis results obtained LC50 and LT50 Camellia sinensis, Linn. var. Assamica leaves extract is 67,183% and 3 hours 46 minutes. Conclusions: Based on this study, it can be concluded that of Camellia sinensis, Linn. var. Assamica leaves extract affects mortality of Ascaris suum, Goeze, the increasing of extract concentration is inversely proportional with the death time of worms. Keywords: Camellia sinensis, Linn. var. Assamica leaves extract, Ascaris suum, Goeze.

Abstract

Background: Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia) has a terapeutic effect, such as antibacterial, anthelmintic and imunomodulator. This research was performed to understand the effect of Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia) fruit extract on death time of Ascaris suum, Goeze In Vitro. Methods: This research was performed using experimental laboratory method with post-test only controlled group design. Adult Ascaris suum, Goeze (108 worms) were divided into 9 groups. The worms treated with NaCl 0.9 % solution and Piperazine 0.4% g/ml served as negative control and positive control group consecutively. The worms treated with increasing dose of Mengkudu fruits (Morinda citrifolia) extract (1% g/ml, 2% g/ml, 4% g/ml, 6% g/ml, 8% g/ml, 10% g/ml, and 12% g/ml) served as treatment groups. Observations were performed every half hour until the worms died. LC50 and LT50 were calculated using probit analysis. Statistic analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test continued by Post hoc Test with Bonferroni correction. Results: Probit analysis showed that LC50 and LT50 of Mengkudu fruits extract were 4.94% g/ml and 703.32 minutes. Kruskall-Wallis test showed that significance difference at least in the two groups. Post Hoc Mann-Whitney with Bonferroni correction test showed that treatment had significant difference (p < 0.001) to negative control and 12% g/ml group had significant difference to positive control group. Conclusions: Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia) fruits extract can induce Ascaris suum death with the death time faster than standard medicine. Keywords: Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia) extract, Ascaris suum, Piperazin.

Abstract

Background: Guava leaves contain tannins and saponins that have been known to have anthelmintic effect. This study aimed to determine the effect of guava leaf extract toward mortality of Ascaris suum, Goeze in vitro Methods: The study was a laboratory experimental research using the post-test only controlled group design. Subjects were adult Ascaris suum, Goeze. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Subjects were divided into 7 groups, each group consisting of 5 worms, replication performed 4 times. Saline solution was used in negative control group, pirantel pamoate 5 mg/ml was used in positive control group, while the treatment group used guava leaf extract concentration of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Worms were immersed in the test solution at 25 mL and was incubated at 37?. Observations were made every 1 hour for 7 hours and counted the number of dead worms for 7 hours. Data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by Mann Whitney test and probit analysis. Results: Total number of dead worms after 7 hours of observation in the negative control group was 0, guava leaf extract concentration of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% respectively by 4, 7, 12, 20, and 20, and in the positive control group was 20. Kruskal Wallis test results showed a significant difference, while Mann Whitney test showed some significant and unsignificant differences among those groups (p <0.05 and p> 0.05). Probit analysis showed LC50 and LC90 respectively at concentration 54.320% and 74.516%.. Conclusions: Based on this study, it can be concluded that the guava leaf extract affects mortality of Ascaris suum, Goeze in vitro, the increased concentration of extract increases the number of deaths of worms. Keywords: Guava leaves extract, Ascaris suum
