Abstract

This study aims at presenting the teacher's belief on teaching philosophy as a teacher professionalism platform. It explores how the teacher perceives teaching philosophy as a teacher professionalism platform and in what ways teaching philosophy assists the teacher to refine his teaching. The research design of this study is basic interpretative study. It is used to identify the extent to which teaching philosophy is understood and practiced by teachers. There are general pattern findings of this study. The first finding is English teachers' perceived teaching philosophy builds reflective teachers. The second findings refers to reflected activity that copes with the teacher in refining suitable ways in facilitating students to learn. Teaching philosophy potentially assists teachers in teaching by providing various activities. Thus, it supports the teacher to be a professional English teacher.

Abstract

Classroom management is one of the most important aspects of teaching, in this case was English, to create an effective and enjoyable learning environment. However, this is one of the challenges faced by pre-service teachers who have no experience previously. This study was conducted to find out what challenges are faced by pre-service English teachers related to classroom management. This research was conducted on four English Education students who were selected based on several criteria. Qualitative research design and interviews were used to collect data from the participants. The data that had been obtained from the interviews were transcribed, coded according to the results of their answers and translated into English. Based on the results of the study, there are three problems that are often faced by student-teachers related to students' bad attitudes and their learning motivation, including disrespecting the teacher, sleep during the class and lack of participation.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out students’ perception of utilizing podcasts in learning speaking skills. The researchers used a qualitative approach and basic interpretative design to explore students’ perceptions. Three students were involved in this study. They are first-grade students of the vocational high school in the academic year 2019/2020. The data was gathered from the reflective journal and semi-structured interview. To obtain the data, the researchers analyzed it by thematic analysis. Results of this research, researchers classified three aspects that are the instruction in the podcast, the benefits of the podcast, and the use of podcast. The findings illustrated that students had a positive perception of the utilization of podcasts in learning speaking. Students perceive that podcast is interesting media because it has many contents or topics that they can listen and practice their speaking skill whenever they want. They also agree that podcast is beneficial for speaking achievement, for example, students can increase their vocabularies and word pronunciation.

Abstract

This research is aimed to explore students’ YouTube-assisted vocabulary learning in the self-regulated learning context. This research was conducted with the participants of four students from a vocational high school in Karawang. This research used narrative inquiry approach; thus, the data were collected through interview, specifically semi-structured interview. The data of this research were analysed by thematic analysis method. This research has discovered that students would start to learn when they had spare time to use, they also had to keep on eye to the internet connection during their learning process, and lastly, they tried to recall the vocabulary they just learned after they finished their learning. Students also had some criteria for the videos they watched in their learning process. This research also found that students experienced some enjoyments in their YouTube-assisted vocabulary learning, although they were still reluctant to continue their learning.

Abstract

The traditional method of teaching and learning writing has been seen as boring. The students only write their writing assignment on their paper and it could only be read by their lecturer. Whereas in this modern era social media platforms become an important part in human daily lives, social media platforms are also used for educational purposes. One of the popular social media platforms is Instagram. This research aims to find how students' responses regarding their affective engagement toward the use of Instagram on the descriptive writing assignment. Qualitative methods and narrative inquiry were used to conduct this research. The participants of this research were 6 English Education Department students in the 8th semester at the University of Singaperbangsa Karawang. Simple random sampling was used in selecting the participants. In this research, three data collection techniques were used to collect the data: interview, students' reflective journal, and photovoice. There are three results of this research. The first is utilizing Instagram on a descriptive writing assignment makes students feel happy, enjoyable, and comfortable. The second is Instagram increases their writing interest. And the third is Instagram makes students feel engaged in the writing activity.Keywords: Affective Engagement, Instagram, Writing Descriptive Text Assignment

Abstract

This research is aimed at findings out the 1) difference between discussion and role play method in affecting students’ speaking skill;  2) interaction of teaching methods and learning motivation on students’ speaking skill; 3) if role play is more effective for the students with high learning motivation than discussion on students’ speaking skill; 4) if discussion is more effective for the students with low learning motivation than role play on students’ speaking skill. This research was factorial design where the class was divided into two classes and four groups.  The total of sample of each group is 20 students. So the total of sample is 80 students. This research was conducted eight time meetings. The instruments of this research are learning motivation questionnaire and test. The result of the research shows that, there was no interaction between learning motivation and teaching method. This result supported by the result of two ways a nova Fobserved 2.98 < Ftable 3.97, but the implementation of group discussion method is effective to improve the speaking skill with students who are high motivation than students who are low motivation. The difference is based on the level of students’ motivation. Thus, it can be concluded that for the students with high motivation, discussion is more effective than role-play on students’ speaking skill. Therefore, role-play is more effective than discussion on students’ speaking skill for students who have low learning motivation at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Karawang. Keywords: Role play, Discussion, learning motivation, speaking skill

Abstract

The purpose of making this research was to know Utilizing of Students Team Work Corner (STWC) technique in Improving Students Reading Comprehension. Related to the problems that have found out taken from the observation time, such: They have lack of understand or poor in their vocabulary and feel bored while reading text, and students still confused how to get the information from content to definite main idea and so on reading text. The place for research was taken from Unsika at the first semester students in 2018. There are 60 students both of Experimental and control class students. The researcher tried out the method to cope the problems with STWC technique that is the simplest method of cooperative learning method. The main idea of STWC is to motivate the students in order to they can support and help each other. As regard the data interpretation and discussion in the previous chapter, the overall results of this research can be conducted by the researcher actually, that STWC technique could improve students reading comprehension going to high level.

Abstract

Textbook has an essential role as teaching material, especially in learning speaking English. Teachers should use a suitable textbook in their teaching process to meet learning objectives. This study aims to analyze speaking activities based on cognitive domain in the Indonesian ELT textbook endorsed by Indonesian Ministry of Educational and Culture entitled Bahasa Inggris, Think Globally Act Locally untuk SMP/MTS Kelas IX [English for Junior High School Grade IX]. The data was analyzed with content analysis method and collected using documentary technique. The findings show that there were three speaking activities such as reading aloud, role play, and presentation task. Also, there were 57 speaking activities that focused on cognitive domain category. Besides, all categories of cognitive domain did not apply in this textbook. There are only four categories that were applied such as remembering (C1), applying (C3), analyzing (C4), and creating (C6). However, understanding (C2) and evaluating (C5) level categories did not realize in this textbook. Thus, this textbook was not quite good to fulfill learning objectives and the distributions of cognitive domain for the levels. Keywords:  Speaking Activity, English Textbook, Cognitive Domain, Content Analysis

Abstract

Pandemi Covid-19 telah memberikan perubahan yang signifikan pada proses belajar dan mengajar. Dengan memperhatikan dampak tersebut maka penelitian ini membahas mengenai hambatan-hambatan yang dialami mahasiswa selama pembelajaran daring.  Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menginvetigasi kendala yang selama ini ditemukan selama kegiatan pembelajaran berlangsung. Metode yang diguanakan adalah studi pustaka. Pengumpulan data diperoleh dari artikel penelitian sebelumnya, peneliti mencari artikel yang relevan dengan permasalahan yang sedang diteliti. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah dengan reduksi data, display data, dan penarikan verifikasi kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa terdapat tiga hambatan yaitu: 1) sarana prasarana atau fasilitas yang kurang memadai, 2) kesulitan mahasiswa dalam memahami materi, dan 3) keterbatasan kemampuan dosen dalam memanfaatkan teknologi.

Abstract

Learning to read is one of the important factors in teaching English. Therefore, students need instructions and strategies that can help them carry out reading learning activities. It resulted several views regarding reading teaching learning instruction in the context of language learning. This study focused on how the students' cognitive engagement in reading narrative texts with the help of CALLA instructions. The participants of the study were five vocational students at one of vocational school in Karawang. This research was conducted using narrative inquiry design and the data were collected through interviews, observation and documentation. To conduct the analysis, this study employed thematic analysis suggested by Braun and Clarke. This study showed that (1) Students have attention on learning classroom, (2) Using dictionary builds students’ resource management learning, (3) Repetition strategy reinforce students’ reading comprehension, (4) Students’ self-elaboration creates them to connect the reading passage. It indicates that CALLA-based instruction engages students cognitively in reading teaching and learning classroom.
