Abstract

Agriculture and food security are key sectors for intervention under climate change and highly sensitive to climate change. In Sub-Saharan Africa, agriculture-the mainstay of rural livelihoods-is particularly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, and the adaptive capacity of rural smallholders is extremely low. Agricultural Production is highly vulnerable even to low-end predictions for global mean temperatures in 2100, with major implications for rural poverty and for both rural and urban food security. In recent years it has become clear that climate change is an inevitable process. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the expectation is that climate change will have an especially negative impact on agriculture and food security, not only a result of projected warming and rainfall deficits, but also because of the vulnerability of the population. The impact upon agriculture and food security will be of great significance Sub-Saharan Africa. To further investigate the link between climate change, agriculture and food security the realist review method was employed. Analysis of the literature found consistent predictions of decreased crop productivity, land degradation, high market prices, and negative impacts on livelihoods, and increased malnutrition. Adaptation strategies were heavily discussed as a means of mitigating a situation of severe food insecurity across the entire region. This is linked to issues of development, whereby adaptation is essential to counteract the negative impacts and improve the potential of the population to undergo development processes. Findings additionally revealed a gap in the literature about how nutrition will be affected, which is of importance given the links between poor nutrition and lack of productivity.

Abstract

This study is designed to analyze factors affecting mango market supply and identify the existing market channels in Gomma district, Southwest Ethiopia. Descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation & frequencies and multiple linear regressions have been used to analyze the data collected from mango market actors. The study identified seven potential mango market channels in the study area. Producer-Retailer-Consumer marketing channel was identified to be the first and most important mango marketing channel in the study area. It represented 26% of the total mango marketed during the survey period. The result from multiple linear regressions model indicates that from the total of ten independent variables five variables such as quantity of mango tree owned, age, education and access to market information were identified as factors affecting volume of mango market supply. Their magnitude, relationship with quantity of mango market supply and interpretations are given in results and discussion section. Finally, possible policy recommendations have been suggested.

Abstract

This paper is designed to review opportunities, constraints and contributions of industrial development on economic growth in Ethiopia. Sources such as scholarly publication, News and magazines, Books and chapters, Conference proceedings, government documents, theses and Dissertations have been reviewed. The review result indicates that industrial sector have substantial contribution to economic growth that helps to create a large portion of the resources needed to fund social development programs in the country. In addition, creation of employment and hence generation of income take place in the sector directly and are indirectly fostered in other sectors like agriculture or services through their linkages to industry. However, financial constraints, shortage of raw materials supply and lack of skilled manpower were identified as the main obstacles to the development of the sector. Finally the review argues that high rate of capital accumulation is a necessary condition for bringing about structural transformation and increased level of production and productivity to give rise for industrialization and the use of appropriate combination of skilled manpower, modern and suitable technologies and investment on both public infrastructures and manufacturing activities should be made.
