Abstract

Life-satisfaction is an important thing for the elderly. Elderly with all its problems such as a decrease in physical, psychological, and social conditions can feel a decrease in life satisfaction. The decrease in life satisfaction may be avoided if the elderly have a high level of wisdom. This study aimed to see the contribution of wisdom to the life-satisfaction of elderly people. The research subjects were 65 elderly people aged 60 years and over in Yogyakarta. Data retrieval was done using the adaptation of 3D-WS Ardelt (2003) scale to measure wisdom and the translation of Life Satisfaction Index Z Neugarten scale (1961) to measure life satisfaction levels. Research data were analyzed using regression analysis. The analysis found that the affective dimension of wisdom was a significant predictor of life satisfaction in the elderly (b = 0.540; p = 0.003).

Abstract

Parents of children with developmental disorders are prone to experiencing parenting stress. This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the parenting stress construct. A total of 125 mothers of children with autistic spectrum disorder were involved in this study. The results showed that parenting stress consists of three domains: parent, child, and parent-child interaction. This was proven through a validity test using exploratory and confirmatory analysis. The exploratory analysis indicated that the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling adequacy was 0.716, meeting the requirement value of above 0.5. Additionally, Bartlett's test of sphericity was significant (p <0.05). Based on the confirmatory analysis, the model was classified as fit with the index: X² (50, N = 125) = 71.98, p = 0.023, RMSEA = 0.060, GFI = 0.91; IFI = 0.94; CFI = 0.94; and RMSEA = 0.077; convergent validity values (λ> 0.5; and AVE values> 0.5); construct reliability values (CR = 0.846). Analysis of psychometric properties of parenting stress met the assumptions of good construct validity and reliability.

Abstract

The “INTERAKTIF” training was compiled to increase the empathy of a school counselor in assisting their students. The “INTERAKTIF” module consists of emotional intelligence and therapeutic communication theory. The research was conducted by untreated control group design method with dependent pretest and posttest samples, which include experimental group and control group. Participants in this research consist of 46 junior high school counselors in Yogyakarta. Statistical analysis result using Mixed ANOVA showed that empathy level on experiment group significantly differs from the control group (F=4,805, p = 0,034). The final result shows that the “INTERAKTIF” training effective in increasing the junior high school counselor’s empathy in Yogyakarta.

Abstract

This article encompasses two studies about the influence of Counseling Teacher Quality Improvement (CTQI) Program in improving the competence of guidance and counseling teacher. The first study evaluated the effectiveness of CTQI in changing students and headmaster’s perceptions toward the way guidance and counseling teacher facilitates students in managing their problems. The second study aimed to examine the increase of guidance and counseling teacher’s counseling self-efficacy after participating in the three months counseling assistance program. Participants were 59 guidance and counseling teachers, 59 student groups, and 59 headmasters. Guidance and counseling teacher’s self-perception scale was given to teachers, perception toward teacher scale was given to headmasters and students. Counseling self-efficacy scale was only given to teachers. Data analysis showed that the perception of teachers, headmasters, and students increased after teachers partook in CTQI. Improvement also occured in counseling self-efficacy after counseling assistance program. However, headmasters’ perception toward guidance and counseling teachers’ counseling self-efficacy remained unchanged.

Abstract

Various studies have been done to overcome excessive fear of heights. One way to overcome excessive fear of heights is to use exposure therapy. This study aimed to determine the effect of virtual reality heights exposure on physiological response and emotional condition in college students. The hypothesis of this study was that there is a significant effect of virtual reality heights exposure on physiological response and emotional condition that is characterized by changes in skin conductance when the stimulus is presented and changes in emotional condition after the stimulus is presented. The design applied in this study was a non-random pretest and posttest experiment. The results of this study indicated that there is a significant influence of virtual reality exposure on physiological response and emotional condition. Thus, the finding opens up opportunities for therapy using this method in Indonesia.

Abstract

During the transition period from adolescence to adulthood, individuals with high level of social anxiety may face challenges in their academics, social life, and career. The internet-based CBT (iCBT) module "Konseling Daring Pendukung Siswa Cerdas" (KDPSC) was developed to intervene with the social anxiety experienced by Indonesian young adults. Fifteen university freshmen with moderate to high levels of social anxiety agreed to fully participate in all sessions of the program. The sessions were conducted under the guidance of registered psychologists through the chatting platform on Google Hangouts. Indonesian version of Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) were administered during the pretest and posttest. We initially conducted a qualitative assessment during the intervention and found three emergent themes at the beginning of Session Two, namely, loneliness, the feeling of having no choice, and social withdrawal. After the end of Session Two, three emergent themes were found; 1), positive thinking, 2) feeling academically motivated, and 3) intention to open up. The main finding showed that students’ level of social anxiety after intervention (M = 58.07; SE = 3.28; t(14) = 4.250; p<0.01; Cohen’s d=0.875) was significantly lower than before intervention (M = 67.20; SE = 2.048). Further implications of the study are discussed.

Abstract

The amount of places that require a person to be in high-altitude circumstances is a barrier for people who are afraid of heights or also known as acrophobia. The therapist can offer a 3D stimulus using Virtual Reality (VR), making it a more efficient alternative to exposure treatments. Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy is the practice of exposing oneself to a fearful stimulus via a VR camera (VRET). The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the VRET module in reducing acrophobia symptoms. The pretest-posttest control group design was utilized in the study. Participants with acrophobia were separated into two groups: the control (n=14) and the experimental (n=15) who received VRET treatment. They completed the Acrophobia Questionnaire (AQ) before and after the nine VRET sessions. Compared to control condition, participants in the experimental group reported lower scores in AQ-Anxiety and AQ-Avoidance. Furthermore, each exposure session results in a significant decrease in psychological assessments utilizing the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Autonomic Perception Questionnaire scales. A significant decrease has also occurred in the Respiratory Rate and Skin Conductance indicators. According to the findings of this study, the VRET module is effective in reducing the psychological and physiological symptoms of acrophobia.
