Abstract

Social media has become a part of human’s life. Social Networking Sites or SNS which a part of social media allows the users to create their own network. Not only that but users can also choose their friends, what kind of content they want to see, what kind of relationship then want to have, or to keep certain content just for a few people to see through social media. A few features like mute feature to close friends feature are there for users to use on Twitter and Instagram. This research will try to find out how those features are being used by the users and why those features are needed. In depth interview is used to six informants who use the mute and close friend feature on Twitter or Instagram. Selective exposure theory is used to see how someone is more interested in seeing contents that match their believes and interests. It shows that mute feature is used to filter some stuff that they want to see and avoid things they don’t like. The mute feature also useful for keeping the relationship in a good term between the users and other people. Meanwhile, close friends feature is used to maintain the connection users have with a few people where they can share stuff to those people only. Users also think that close friends feature is useful to protect their privacy.

Abstract

Social media and Internet websites have a role in election campaigns as a political information source. The new media also allows each individual to express political attitudes and support openness. This indicates that new media, especially social media, is influencing the search for political information and beliefs to participate in elections. This article aims to describe the influence of attention to social media, attention to traditional Internet sources and online expressions on the political self-efficacy and situational political involvement. The research method uses a quantitative approach by conducting an online survey of 100 respondents purposively. Data analysis uses univariate analysis for demographic data. The hypotheses are tested by using a simple linear regression test. There are six hypotheses tested in this study and all hypotheses are supported statistically. This study shows that attention to social media has a stronger influence on political self-efficacy and situational political involvement than tradistional Internet sources and online expressions. Keywords: social media, Internet, politics, political self-efficacy, situational political involvement

Abstract

After the fall of the World Trade Center (WTC), radicalism has become a religious phenomenon around the world. Uniquely, the Muslims are accused of being perpetrators for such horrible terror. It has been, however, unconsciously admitted that the acts and behaviors shown by the Muslims around the world, with special reference to the North Sumatera as the locus of this research, seem to ?justify? such accusation. The acts and behaviors have been started, first of all, by the feeling of ?pride? and ?happiness? with the fall of ?the twin towers? as the symbol of the USA?s supremacy. The feelings are subsequently coupled by animosity toward the USA and its allies. Such fiery hatred makes the Muslims unable to objectively identify triggering factors behind the emergence of religious radicalism, which, in fact, does not merely exist among the Muslims community but also in every religious community, especially among the Jews and Christians. Regardless of this religious pheno-menon I would argue that there must be another suspicious indicator behind the rise of religious radicalism called ?destructive theology?. The theology believes that God will be present when humans fight and kill each other. Destruction and burning of worship houses in the North Sumatera are among obvious examples of such theology.

Abstract

The conceptualizes food security and food sovereignty as fluid and changing discourses that define the problem of hunger. The discursive geohistories of food security and food sovereignty in order to identify oppositions and relationalities between them. I argue that the interpretations of, and relations between, food security and food sovereignty vary by geography and scale, as well as by the conceptual and theoretical differences within the discourses themselves. When and where these discourses develop and emerge is central to understanding their oppositions and convergences. How scale is constructed within particular discourses is also important to understanding how they co-exist relationally or in opposition. Food security and food sovereignty discourses are tied to distinctive political and economic histories, ecologies, and identities at the national and local levels. They are differentially deployed depending upon geographic context and the political economy of development and underdevelopment. Both discourses are dynamic and changing in relation to the wider political and cultural economies of food system dynamics across scale. Uniform definitions of each term should be resisted. The point is to understand the geographies of their relational overlap and their continual difference.
