Abstract

This article analysis forms of verbal abuse of cursing in myths of Balinese culture. The politeness of a language varies based on its speaker’s culture. Things that are considered polite or not polite in one culture, often associated with something that is respected, sacred, taboo, and/or hidden, such as, beliefs of its ancestors, parents, supernatural beings, as well as body parts that were respected or hidden. Degrading, cursing, swearing, and mocking acts appeared to be the contrary of language politeness. Therefore, both politeness and verbal violence are closely related to the culture of its speakers. In relation to the Balinese culture, some verbal violence applied in some of the Balinese myths. The verbal violence found in myth can be grouped into two types, which were first in the form of threats and second, in the form of curse-shaped. Based on the data found, the verbal abuses of curses found in the myth were of difficult childbirth, child expulsion, misfortune, and picking up jewelry, and pregnancy.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Balinese language is divided into two dialects, namely Bali Dataran(DBD), and Bali Aga (DBA) dialect. The DBD variation happens vertically, but not in DBA. Some vocabularies in DBD that are classified into low(Tak-Alus/TA) are classified as common variants in DBA. This research aims to explore the Balinese personal pronoun variations in DBD  which  DBA in  Sembiran(DS), and Seraya Timur(DST). The results, by applying the dialectology theory and correlation method or metode padan, showed that the personal pronouns of DS and DST varied lexically and phonologically. Lexically, the personal pronoun of first person singular in DBD /(ti)tiyaŋ/(A), /(i)–caŋ/ and /yaŋ/(TA) was realized as /oke/ and /kaka/ in DS also /(b)–iba/, /uke/, and /wane/ in DST. The second person singular /ragane/(A), /cai/ /ɲai/, and /ibə/(TA) in DBD, were realized as /cai/, /ɲai/, and /ŋko/ in DS also /cai/ and /ɲai/ in DST; and the third person singular /idə/, /dane/(A) and /(i) –yə/(TA) in DBD, were realized as /ya/, in DS and DST. Meanwhile phonologically, the realization of phoneme /a/ at the end of the word in DBD was realized as /ə/, in DS and DST was /a/.  permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v46i12018p073

Abstract

Based on the language mapping conducted by The Language Development and Fostering Agency, there are around 560 regional languages in Indonesia. Of all these languages, only 11 regional languages have their own literacy system. One local language that has a literacy system is Balinese. Balinese script has a vital function in the effort of documenting and transmitting various systems of knowledge found by Balinese people from the past to the present. Besides having as documentation media, Balinese script is also functional in the three important stages of Balinese people's life. From the first stage (being born), the Balinese people used the script as a provision for the burial of the placenta. During adulthood, Balinese script is also used in a tooth- cutting rite. Similarly, when the Balinese people died, Balinese script was used as rajah-rajah kajang. There are contradictions that seem to be the gap between the functionalities of Balinese script and the reality of the low knowledge of Balinese people about Balinese script. It is an indisputable fact that Latin letters dominate various spheres of life. Realizing this, it needs the effort to make people realize the potential of Balinese script in the creative process of Balinese Script Calligraphy, which is important to be studied further. Balinese script that has a rounded shape (ngawindu) is very aesthetic to be developed into aesthetic forms of a variety. Not only that, from the searches carried out in some lontar storage sites in Bali, Balinese script calligraphy contains the use of interesting language and important literary values as a medium of educational media.

Abstract

This article discusses the valency-increasing mechanism in the Dawan language. The data was obtained through observation of Dawan language speakers by applying the note-taking method. Other data were obtained from literature in Dawan's language, namely Beno Alekot (bible) and Si Knino (songbook). In addition, the data is supported by intuitive data from the researcher as a native speaker of the Dawan language. Considering the variety of dialects in this language, the data and discussion are focused on the Amanuban dialect. The results show that the mechanism of valency-increasing in the Dawan language is a transitive process. This process is carried out through the strategy of adding new arguments such as in causative construction or promoting peripheral arguments into core arguments as in applicative construction. The transitive referred to is the process of making an intransitive clause into a transitive or a transitive into a ditransitive. This process does not cause morphological changes to the verb as the core of a clause.
