Abstract

This paper deals with the ways used by tourist guides (TG) in Bali to express their politeness to foreign tourists  (FT) through several speech acts, such as greetings the FT, welcoming the FT to Bali, introducing themselves to the FT, thanking the FT, and apologizing to the FT. The research is conducted in several tourist objects at two Regency and Municipality in Bali, which are Badung Regency and Denpasar Municipality. The research result reveals that the tourist guides employ those speech acts to express their English language politeness to the foreign tourists (FT). Those speech acts are also used to perform their friendliness in providing tour guide services to the FT.

Abstract

This current study was intended to develop the ecolinguistic perspective-based syllabus. The descriptive qualitative method was applied and natural phenomena were used to develop syllabus. The phenomena focused on to what extent English was mastered by learners and what learning and teaching strategies were applied. The data were obtained through test, questionnaire and direct observation for the need analysis. The State Document related to the curriculum policy was referred to in the situation analysis. The syllabus was developed based on the results of the need analysis and situation analysis and the ecolinguistic perpective-related theories. The contents of the syllabus were developed based on the following elements; they are text, context, linguistic elements, learning situation, teaching and learning activities (Kegiatan Belajar Mengajar, abbreviated to KBM) and evaluation. The content of the text was adjusted to the transactional and interpersonal functions. The context was created based on the inter-, intra-, and trans-cultural contexts of the ecological, social and ideological dimensions. KBM was prepared in accordance with the cognitive linguistic process for the language-related activities and based on the situation chosen by learners for the language production. The outcome of language performance was measured using the performance assessment system, causing the contents of the syllabus to reflect that one element was connected with another in such a way that they formed one integral language meaning.

Abstract

Abstract Undang-Undang dasar 1945 Pasal 32 ayat 2 and Undang-Undang Nomor 32 Tahun 2004 provide a vast opportunity for the local community to manage their capacity in every aspect of their life. In the application of the otonomy, local community has an opportunity to preserve their social cultural values as their identity of their community. Balinese can basically be recognised by their language (phonic form) they use as well as their traditions (physical forms) they practice. These aspects are commonly used as a symbol of identity by the Balinese ethnic community nationally and internationally. This symbol needs to be maintained for the shake of the Balinese community preservation. The purpose of this study is to explain the position of Balinese Language in the global era as a symbol of identity for the community. The study focuses on the description of the Balinese identity related to the Balinese language. One function of language is as symbol of identity. Balinese has this role for its community and it is also a pride. This condition can be proven by the development of the use of the Balinese language in time. At the present time Balinese has their function as a mean for expressing their cultural aspects. However, in this global era, the Balinese language develops naturally in line with the need of the user. The internal as well as the external problems of the language use in Balinese community need to be identified in order to find out the solution for maintaining the language, in turn the language itself is still continually function as a symbol of Balinese community.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to discover the shift occurring in the text analysis in the level of word and phrase. The analysis was limited to the shift in the level of noun or the noun phrase utilized in the Source Language which is translated into the Target Language.The data were collected from the Balinese story I BelogKelangan as the source text and its English translation I Belog Lost Something as the target text compiled by I Gusti Made Sutjaja (2010).The data were elaborated on the analysis by Qualitative method and presented in the form of words and sentences based on the application of shift theory Vinay-Darlbenet (in Venuti, 2000). The result of this study showed that there were two types of shift applied to the text. They are grammatical structure shift called Transposition and point of view shift known as Modulation. There were two types of shift grammatical structure; Unit Shift and Category Shift. The data were merely showing the low to high units of translation such as from word into phrase and from the phrase into clause. Meanwhile, the category shift the only occurred in different word class from noun to verb. The shifts in point of view resulted in Lexical Dense where the implicit lexical was transferred explicitly, in contrast the explicit item was transferred implicitly referred to Lexical Loose. In addition, there was also the stress on the role of character. Shift cannot be avoided in translation because it involves two different languages which are different in linguistically and culturally. This research was expected to have contributions for future study on translation shift in Balinese text

Abstract

This research aimed to discover Balinese language shift pattern in its language usage. Specifically, the research sought to comprehend and analyzed Balinese language shift based on bio-linguistics diversity that comprises of 1) contexts of Balinese language use in Denpasar, and 2) social as well as a cultural aspect that affect Balinese language shift. The research location is in Denpasar, which classified into four different regencies, they are West, East, North, and South Denpasar. Further representation of the data will be decided based upon quantitative data obtained on four regencies. Techniques of data collection will be done in the form of observation and questionnaires, with additional interview and note taking. The sample taken will be on Balinese speakers in youth and mature age. Representation and proportion of the sampling will be 50 for each location. The analysis will be done in qualitatively and quantitatively with both formal and informal method. By using the concepts of language choice, sociolinguistics, and bio-linguistics diversity, Balinese language shift model can be discovered. This language shift model will prove beneficial to the system and mechanism of language inheritance in formal and informal contexts, in the effort to maintain cultural diversity and ethnic identity of a multilingual community.

Abstract

This undergraduate thesis entitled Women and Men Linguistic Features in The First Presidential Debate Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in 2016 was aimed at analyzing the women linguistic features represented by Clinton utterances based on Lakoff (1975) theory and men linguistic features represented by Trump based on Coates (2003) theory and at investigating the implication of the dominant women and men linguistic features. The data were taken from the debate video of NBC YouTube channel and its transcript is taken from the Washington Post website. The method used in collecting data was the documentary method applying the note-taking technique. The qualitative and quantitative method was applied in analyzing the data. In presenting the analysis, formal and informal methods were used. The analysis results showed that there seven features of ten women linguistic features discovered in this study; they were lexical hedges, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjectives, intensive adverbs, hypercorrect grammar, super polite forms, and emphatic stress whereas features such as tag questions, avoidance of strong swear words and precise color terms were not found in this study. In this study, there are only three of four men linguistic features such as stereotypically masculine topics, great attention to details, elaborate use of taboo words whereas men only features were not used in Trump utterances. And the dominant features found in Clinton utterances were emphatic stress while in Trump, the dominant feature was great attention to details.

Abstract

This study aimed at (1) describing the realization of the use of teaching materials in learning English speaking skills in the field of front office services, (2) developing learning materials for English speaking skills in the field of front office services, and (3) examining the effectiveness the learning materials for English speaking skills in the field of front office services with a pragmatic approach. This research was conducted using Research and Development (R&D) research methods and applying Borg and Gall (1983).  Based on the results of the analysis,  it was found that learning English for tourism and hospitality currently does not include linguistic elements in it. The books or modules available were limited. Based on this reality, this research develops two educational products, namely a pragmatic-based syllabus and module. The syllabus and modules have 12 learning topics that have been adapted to the use of English for hotel front office services. Learning materials for English speaking skills for front office services with a pragmatic approach are effective for use in organizing the teaching and learning process as evidenced by the t-test results, namely 0.001 (0.001 <0.005). In addition, the perceptions of students and lecturers also showed a positive response to the modules developed in this study.

Abstract

the phenomena of code switching has became more frequent, especially in Indonesia which has a lot of different communities with their respective languages. this study was conducted in order to enhance the knowledge regarding code switching by analyzing the types of code switching used in the podcast chosen. Podcast taken form Marry Riana entitled Kata Marissa Anita tentang Insecure & Depresi karena Social Media was used in this study as data source. Qualitative method was used as method in conducting the research by doing documentation, and observation method in analyzing the data with the help of checklist as its instrument. The data analyzed were the form of written data which was got by transcribing the utterances in the podcast. Based on the analysis, three types of code switching proposed by Hamers and Blanc (2003) was used in the podcast. The types of code switching used by Marissa Anita, and Mary Riana in the podcast were inter-sentential code switching, intra-sentential code switching, and extra-sentential code switching.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the language politeness strategies applied by the tongka (spokesperson) and other parties involved in the belis negotiation speech event in the Manggarai community, the Pasat-Ruis dialect, Indonesia. This study used a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five key informants with experience as spokespersons (tongka) and adequate knowledge of the Manggarai language and culture. Data were analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles and Haberman (1992). The study found that the off-record politeness strategy was applied in two patterns; (1) The use of metaphorical phrases to refine the speech. Knowledge and the ability to interpret the meaning of speech through metaphorical phrases is an important aspect that must be possessed by a tongka (spokesperson) by connecting the phrase with the context of its use so that it can be understood and fulfills the elements of Politeness. (2) The use of sopi while conveying speech. The patterns show Politeness and the distinctive and authentic characteristics of Manggarai culture. Meanwhile, the cultural values of the utterances of belis negotiations include kinship, brotherhood, responsibility, appreciation, and respect. Thus, the findings indicate that the spokespersons selected in the belis negotiation process need to consider the knowledge of Manggarai culture and the ability to use metaphorical phrases in cultural speech so that the belisnegotiation process runs smoothly according to the expectations of the two extended families.

Abstract

Language makes people understand each other and interact in daily life. Most importantly, language has become an important tool in communication. The way men and women speak is different. They have different features although they speak the same language. The title of this undergraduate thesis is "Women's Language Features Used by Elle Evans in The Kissing Booth 2 Movie". The main purpose of this research was to identify and describe the types of women's language styles and to find out functions and factors of the use of women's language. This research is a descriptive-qualitative study and the primary data were expressions in dialogues related to women's language in the movie. The method that was used to collect the data was the documentation method through the note-taking technique. The data analysis was conducted using the theory proposed by Robin Lakoff (1975). The result of this study showed that not all types of women’s language features were used by Elle Evans in the movie The Kissing Booth 2 Movie. The researcher found eight types of women's language features. They are: lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, empty adjectives, hypercorrect grammar, super polite form, intensifiers, the avoidance of strong swear words and emphatic stress. The precise color terms and rising intonation on declaratives were not found in Elle's utterances. However, the key problem of Lakoff's theory of women's linguistic features is that apparently, men also use women's speech in their dialogue. Lakoff's theory would have been more interesting if she had considered the use of women's speech used by men and the use of strong swear words used by women in her book.
