Abstract

The meaning of thing in a discourse is potentially determined by soemoene who has the power. In this case, a discourse is purposely designed and conditioned by dominan institution. Through the language in a discourse, some bad characters or images can be attributed to someone such as subversive, fundamentalist, terrorist, and so on. Such phenomena also can be found in the terminology of black and white in the discourse about racism. Black is identical as the opposition of white. Whereas black is bad, white always has connotation with good things, such as purity, God, excellence, etc. Binary opposition of white and black is continously produced in the discourse about racism. Black people (negroid) are assumed inferior toward white (caucasoid). At the same time, language also contribute positive image toward people who have the authority. In that case, language is not only a grammatical system, but it leads to the conflict of interest. This paper is a result of library research toward a discourse about racism in the novels of Jacqueline Woodson. The research was conducted by using poscolonialism and deconstruction approach. This reserach is aimed at revealing: (1) how are the image about black and white are constructed in the novels of Jacqueline Woodson. (2) What are the binary opposition, decentering and fixasion aspects in that novels. The conclusion of this research shows that language is still powerfull in shaping ideas about racism, especially in keeping the issues of black and white as binary opposition.  Key words: discourse, binary opposition, power, racism

Abstract

The term witchcraft can have positive or negative connotations depending on the cultural context. Amongst Puritans it has historically been associated with evil and the devil. Some people think when people say the word witch or witchcraft they think it is evil and traditionally stereotyped as being female. Ecofeminists who self-identify as “witches” see it as beneficent and morally positive.

Abstract

Ekspresionisme ialah suatu airan dalam dunia seni khususnya seni lukis dan sastra yang menekankan pada kebebasan seorang seniman untuk melawan gejolak hati sepenuhnya. Emosi dimuntahkan secara irasional dan visioner (Hartoko, 1985,64)Aliran ini pertama kali muncul di Jerman pada tahun 1916-1925 yaitu periode sebelum dan sesudah Perang Dunia I. Van Gogh dan Paul Gauguin adalah pelopor aliran ini, sedangk n dalam bidang sastra pelopornya adalah penyair Baudelaire dan Rimbaud, novelis Dostoevsky, filusuf Niet zsche, dan dramawan August Strindberg. Dari karya Frans Kafka ini pertama kali yang menarik untuk dibicarakan adalah judul cerita itu sendiri yang mengundang beberapa pertanyaan. Siapakah sebenarnya si seniman terebut? Apakah seniman tersebut benar-benar kelaparan atau lapar akan sesuatu? Dan mengapa dia sampai kelaparan? Setelah ditelesuri dari awal sampai akhir cerita ternyata Frans Kafka sama sekali tidak memberi nama khusus pada si seniman. Hal ini dapat diinterpretasikan bahwa apa yang dialami oleh si seniman mungkin saja dapat terjadi pada setiap manusia, khususnya seniman. Sampai disini interpretasi itu dapat diterima, tetapi sampai pada kata "hunger" yang berarti lapar atau kelaparan maka interpretasi "A HungerArtis" yang dipakai sebagai judul menjadi tidak masuk akal, apalagi kalau dihubungkan dengan cerita secara keseluruhan.
