Abstract

Teledentistry is an examination and consultation of patients to the dentist without going through face-to-face visits, but with the help of an online application. The purpose of the activity is to help and facilitate Co-ass students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Andalas University, to fulfill the requirements for oral diagnosis via online (teledentistry) during the covid 19 pandemic. The activity is carried out in the form of examination/screening of patients carried out by Co-ass students whom Hospital Precept accompanies at the Faculty of Dentistry, Andalas University (Lecturer). Activities to be carried out consist of counseling, coordinator, mentoring, and monitoring of implementation and evaluation. The results of this activity can meet the patient's need for dental and oral examinations and expand access to dental care. Dental and oral health is essential for every individual, especially for carrying out functions such as eating, speaking, aesthetics, and feeling comfortable throughout the day. The Covid-19 pandemic limits the community's social conditions, including their need to get dental and oral services from dentists. In addition, dentistry is one of the jobs most at risk of contracting Covid-19 from patients. Through teledentistry activities, a dentist takes anamnesis to patients, clinical examinations are carried out through consultation through pictures and videos, diagnosis as initial information in planning further treatment, and supportive care such as patient education.

Abstract

Screening for dental caries and risk for caries in young children prior to school entry couldidentify caries at an earlier and reversible stage, and lead to interventions to treat existing caries, prevent progression of caries, and reduce incidence of future lesions. Screening strategies typicallyinclude oral health risk assessment and visual examination to identify high-risk children, including thosewho already have caries. Primary care clinicians can play an important role in screening for dentalcaries. Therefore, community service activities to prevent dental caries can improve and care for dentaland oral health at the national level. Through this dedication is expected dentists can share knowledgeto the community as a form of community service. The service activities are held in SDN 03 Alai Padang, as the cooperation form with Indonesia Dental Association (PDGI) to celebrate World oral HealthDay .This activity consist counseling and mass toothbrushing.

Abstract

Dental and oral health is essential for every individual, especially for carrying out functions such as eating, speaking, aesthetics and feeling comfortable throughout the day. Dentists recommend checking the patient's oral health every six months. The Covid-19 pandemic limits the community's social conditions, including the need for patients to get dental and oral services from dentists. In addition, the professional activity of a dentist is one of the jobs most at risk of contracting Covid-19 from patients. A social service activity aims to introduce the Teledentistry method to patients, Co-ass students, Preceptors, and the general public. Teledentistry is the examination and consultation of dental and oral disorders and treatment of patients to the dentist without going through a face-to-face visit, but with the help of an online application. Through teledentistry activities, a dentist can take anamnesis to patients, in which clinical examinations were carried out through consultation with pictures and videos facilitated by interactive virtual media. The oral diagnosis was obtained as initial information in planning further treatment, and supportive care was carried out in the form of patient education and an encouragement to habituation of healthy living behaviour.

Abstract

Characteristics of mild gingivitis are change in the color of the gums, slight edema, and no bleeding and painless. If it does not receive the proper treatment, gingivitis can become periodontitis which cause alveolar jaw bone tissue damage, resulting in further tissue damage locally and systemically through the blood vessels. The selection of appropriate therapy is essential to reduce the prevalence of the disease. In addition to scaling and plaque control, the propolis toothpaste can be used as initial therapy. The toothpaste contains propolis known for anti-inflammatory effects that is useful as one of the initial teraphy to treat mild gingivitis. Gingival index of 15 patients were measured before and after use of propolis toothpaste. Data analysis was performed by means of univariate to describe each variabel using Kolmogorov Smirnof Test. Gingival Index difference between before and after brushing with toothpaste containing propolis by paired t-test. Toothpaste contains propolis which proved effective in the initial therapy of mild gingivitis with an average difference of reduction in Gingival Index scores before and after was 0.40 ± 0.04 There are significant differences (p <0.05) difference between the average reduction in Gingival Index scores before and after the use of toothpaste containing propolis.

Abstract

Saliva is a complex body fluid and has important roles that related with biological processes in oral cavity. Saliva has important roles in maintaining health of oral cavity from caries diseases and periodontal diseases. One of saliva functions in maintaining oral health is associated with the degree of saliva’s acidity (pH). Salivary pH can influence oral health by related with caries diseases and periodontal diseases. One of preventive method could be done is chemically preventive by using mouth wash solution. One of natural mouth wash solution could be used is miswak (Salvadora persica) extract mouth wash solution. Chemical contents of Salvadora persica extract can prevent descending of salivary pH because it has bactericidal effect that will prevent acid production from oral bacteria, increase saliva buffer activity by increasing saliva secretion. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of  Salvadora persica extract solution on salivary pH. The method used in this research is experimental with one group pre-posttest design. Subjects were 17 students of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Padang. Measurements before and after mouth rinsing with Salvadora persica extract solution 50% performed on the subjects. The data were analyzed by paired T-test (p<0,05). This research showed the average salivary pH before given Salvadora persica extract solution was 6,565 and the average salivary pH after given miswak extract solution was 7,4. Mouth rinsing with Salvadora persica extract solution can increase salivary pH and can be used as mouth wash solution to maintain oral health.

Abstract

Forensic odontology in dentistry is used to identify victims. Several methods can be used, such as rugoscopy. Rugoscopy is a victim identification method by evaluating the palatal rugae. Rugoscopy is very advantageous due to its low cost, fast results and practical nature. Palatal rugae is protected from trauma and high temperature due to its internal position in the oral cavity. Palatal rugae is an individualistic structure, though it bears several resemblance with the hereditary pattern due to the polygenic mechanism. The purpose of this research is to determine the difference of palatal rugae shape and size between uncle and nephew in Minangkabau ethnics. This study is an analytical observational study with a cross sectional approach. A total of 78 pairs of uncle and nephew of the Minangkabau ethnicity in Luhak Nan Tigo. Palatal rugae is classified using the Thomaz and Khutze classification. Data were analyzed by using Mann Whitney non-parametric statistical analysis. Data analysis show the palatal rugae shape of uncle and nephew from the Minangkabau ethnicity is dominated by a wavy shape, followed by curvy, straight, unified and circular shapes. The palatal rugae size of uncle and naphew from the Minangkabau ethnicity is dominated by primary size, followed by secondary and fragmenter size. Mann Whitney analysis revealed no significant difference of palatal rugae shape and size between uncle and nephew in Minangkabau ethnics (p>0,05), though there is a significant difference in the unified shape (p<0,05). Palatal rugae shape and size have a similar pattern with hereditery patterns, though not identical. Palatal rugae may be used as a secondary method of victim identification Keywords : Rugoscopy, palatal rugae, uncle and nephew

Abstract

Pendahuluan: Terapi pertama gingivitis adalah scaling and root planning (SRP). Introduction: The first therapy of gingivitis is scaling and root planning (SRP). This therapy functions to remove plaque and calculus that cause gingival inflammation, but SRP has limitations that cannot eliminate all periodontal pathogenic bacteria in areas that are difficult to access when instrumentation. Therefore, additional therapy is needed such as immunomodulatory administration to increase the success of SRP. Zinc has been known as an immunomodulator. This element is a catalyst of enzymes that play a role in the process of collagen degradation and healing of gingivitis, namely Tissue Inhibitor Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1). As a healing therapy for gingivitis, zinc is used as a supplement (systemic) and as an additive in toothpaste (topical). The authors aimed to compare the effectiveness of different zinc applications to TIMP-1 concentrations in the saliva of gingivitis patients after scaling and root planning. Methods: The research subjects were students of MAN 2 Padang who suffered from moderate and severe gingivitis based on gingival index and bleeding on probing examination. Subjects consisted of 3 groups, namely the group with the application of 2% zinc citrate toothpaste after SRP (group 1), SRP group without additional treatment (group 2), and zinc sulphate supplementation group 20 mg (group 3) after SRP. Each group consists of 11 people. Scaling and root planning were done on netted subjects. Toothpaste and zinc supplements were given in groups 1 and 3 for 14 days. After the treatment, the saliva of the research subjects was collected by an unstimulated method. TIMP-1 saliva content was analysed by the ELISA method in the Biomedical Laboratory of the UNAND FK. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 17 software with ANOVA and Bonferroni tests. Results: There were significant differences between treatment groups (p <0.05). The group that most showed a significant increase in TIMP-1 was group 1 (p <0.05). There were significant differences between group 1 and group 2. There were no significant differences between group 2 and group 3, and group 1 with group 3 (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Topical use of zinc is more effective at improving the healing of gingivitis after SRP than systemic use of zinc.
