Abstract

Indonesian students are lacking in critical thinking skills, however, studies analyzing critical thinking processes and their relation to thinking styles are limited. This study aimed to describe students’ critical thinking processes in solving jumping task problems according to Gregorc's thinking style. The subjects of this present qualitative research were eight Year 7 students. The instruments included a thinking style questionnaire, tests, and interview guidelines. The results showed that concrete sequential subjects tended to write the completion stages sequentially and analyzed them well. Abstract sequential subjects were inclined to solve the problems based on the known concepts without completing the work. Concrete random subjects tended to write information in their own way without completing their work. Meanwhile, abstract random subjects were inclined to write incomplete information and did not complete their work. Generally, based on the IDEALS model, the two sequential subjects were similar in the identity, define, and enumerate steps, while the two random subjects only had similarities in the identity step. This study results imply that jumping tasks can be used as an alternative in developing students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This research purpose to describe metacognition in solving Open Ended SPLDV Problems Based on Sensing Intuition personality. This research type is qualitatif descriptive conducted in class VIII I SMP Negeri 1 Purwosari. Subjects of this research consist of 3 students with Sensing personality and 3 students with Intuition personality selected based on the highest score on personality type. Six students will solve Open Ended problem and inteview. The results showed that students sensing type receive information based on the facts, while students Intuition type personality found a correlation based on information. Students Sensing type only solve Open Ended problems using two different methods the teacher had been taught, while students Intuition type able to solve Open Ended problems using new methods and able to explain solution more than two correctly answers. On the worksheet students Sensing type tend to be systematic, while students Intuition type tend to be not systematis. Although there is a difference metacognition activities in solving Open Ended SPLDV problems, students with Sensing and Intuition personality able to meet all indicator metacognition planning, monitoring, and evaluating.

Abstract

Abstract: PISA performance becames one of important eduacation indicator in a country. Indonesia has decided to join PISA since 2000. However the Indonesian PISA result is not surprising enough. Even, in 2012, Indonesian score in PISA lies at the lowest rank, namely 64 out 65 observed country. One of major factor is the teacher knowledge shortages of solving PISA test as well as most of teachers do not know how to develop a PISA-like test. In this paper, we try to develop a PISA-like test and implement it in a small group of students to assess their mathematical reasoning and communication ability. The result show that, from 26 respondents involved in this research, two students achieves on four level, four students achieve on three level, thirteen students achieve on two level, and seven students achieve on one level. Keywords: Pisa-like math test of change and relationship content, the students’ ability of mathematical reasoning and communication.

Abstract

Representation is one of the fundamental abilities of mathematics reflected by students understanding of mathematics concepts, principles, or procedures, so it becomes crucial for teachers to develop students' mathematical representation skills. This research was time to describe the representation used in the problem and the level of mathematical representation ability needed to solve mathematical literacy problems. The data was collected through the assignment to design mathematical literacy problems between 3-10 pieces and interview as triangulation on 35 prospective elementary school teacher students. The data are grouped based on various representations and analyzed quantitatively and descriptively. Then one problem is chosen randomly for each type of representation to describe the level of representation ability needed to solve the problem qualitatively. The results show that the mathematical representations used in designed mathematical literacy problems are pictorial-verbal, pictorial-symbolic, verbal-symbolic, pictorial, verbal, symbolic, and pictorial-verbal-symbolic representations. The level of representational ability that tends to be needed to solve problems is levels 0 and 1. This study suggests that prospective teacher students should develop mathematical representation knowledge to improve the quality of their learning in the future

Abstract

The phenomenon of students not being used to solving higher order thinking questions often occurred in one of the Islamic Senior High School in Sidoarjo. Therefore, this research aims to describe the profile of students' problem-solving in overcoming HOTS questions based on the self-efficacy. The research subjects were three selected students of XI-IPA class who were categorized into low, moderate, or high self-efficacy based on self-efficacy questionnaires and had good communication skills. The data were collected through tests, triangulated by interviews and analyzed using Polya's problem-solving indicators (unerstanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying the plan, and looking back). The results show that: 1) Students with low self-efficacy able to solve an “analyze” problem eventhough without looking back and solve the “evaluate” problem through all of the stages. Eventhough, he need help to work on the “creative” problem; 2) Students with moderate self-efficacy able to solve an “analyze” problem through all stages. However, while working on evaluate and creative problem, he could only complete the stages of understanding the problem, devise an incomplete plan and never try to carry out the plan; 3) Students with high self-efficacy can solve the problem on analyze, evaluate, and create in a complete stage. Teachers must become accustomed to asking HOTS questions to students in order to increase student self-efficacy and problem-solving abilities.
